Chapter 5: The Father Who Wanted Custody

Maya didn't sleep that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the legal document on the garage workbench and heard Chris's quiet admission.

Andre had threatened to take you away from her.

The idea felt impossible.

Andre had missed birthdays, school performances, and countless opportunities to be part of her life. He had forgotten promises so often that Maya had eventually stopped believing them.

Why would a man who barely showed up want custody of a child?

And why would her mother hide that history?

At seven the next morning, Maya walked into the kitchen and found Natasha sitting at the table with a cup of untouched coffee.

Her mother looked exhausted. Her hair was pulled into a loose bun, and dark circles shadowed her eyes.

Maya placed the photocopy of the guardianship agreement on the table.

“Tell me about the custody threat.””

Natasha stared at the paper.

“Chris told you.””

“He told me Andre wanted to take me away from you.””

Natasha's lips tightened.

“That was a long time ago.””

“How long?””

“About eight years.””

Maya pulled out a chair.

“Why?””

Natasha looked toward the hallway, apparently checking whether Chris was nearby.

Maya noticed.

“Don't look for him. I'm asking you.””

Her mother lowered her eyes.

“After your father and I separated, we had disagreements about visitation. Andre wanted more time with you, and I didn't think he was ready to take on that responsibility.””

“Then why didn't you let him try?””

“Because he wasn't reliable.””

Maya stared at her.

“You're the one who told me he was my real father.””

“He is your biological father.””

“But you said he was the one who mattered most.””

“I never said that.””

“You said it a hundred different ways.””

Natasha flinched.

Maya continued.

“You told Chris to stay in his lane because he wasn't my father. But now you're telling me Andre wanted custody? Why didn't you tell me that before?””

“Because you were a little girl.””

“And I'm seventeen now. Am I old enough yet?””

Natasha looked at her daughter, and for a moment, the anger seemed to leave her face.

“I was afraid,” she whispered.

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

Maya felt a knot form in her stomach.

“Did Andre actually file for custody?””

Natasha hesitated.

“No. He threatened to.””

“Did he have a reason?””

“He believed I was preventing him from seeing you.””

“Were you?””

Natasha's eyes flashed.

“I was protecting you!””

“From what?””

“From a man who couldn't keep his promises!””

The words echoed through the kitchen.

Maya stared at her mother.

“Then why do you keep defending him now?””

Natasha opened her mouth but said nothing.

Maya pushed the agreement toward her.

“And what does this have to do with Chris?””

Natasha looked down at the document.

“When Chris and I married, he promised he would help raise you without trying to replace Andre. The guardianship agreement was supposed to be a backup plan. It was never supposed to give him power over me.””

“It doesn't say he can take me away from you whenever he wants.””

“You don't understand the legal implications.””

“Then explain them.””

Natasha rubbed her forehead.

“I'm trying.””

“No, you're trying to make me stop asking questions.””

For several seconds, Natasha sat silently.

Then she reached into a drawer and removed a thick manila folder.

“I should have shown you this years ago.””

She placed it on the table.

Inside were copies of old emails, court notices, and letters exchanged between Natasha and Andre. Some pages were faded. Others carried handwritten notes in the margins.

Maya picked up the first letter.

It was dated eight years earlier.

Andre's name appeared at the bottom.

Natasha,

I don't understand why you're refusing to let me take Maya for the weekend. I know I've made mistakes, but she's my daughter, and I have a right to be part of her life.

Maya read it twice.

The next letter was from Natasha.

Andre,

You cannot disappear for weeks and then expect me to rearrange Maya's life whenever you decide you're ready to be a father. She needs consistency, not promises.

Maya looked up.

“She's right about that.””

Natasha nodded, tears forming in her eyes.

“I know.””

Maya returned to the folder.

The correspondence continued for several months. Andre requested more visits. Natasha refused some and agreed to others. Arguments escalated over missed pickups, work schedules, and whether Maya was comfortable spending nights at Andre's apartment.

Then she found a printed email from Andre.

If you keep shutting me out, I'll ask the court for custody. I won't let you erase me from my daughter's life.

Maya's hands trembled.

“So he did threaten you.””

“Yes.””

“Did he ever take me to court?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

Natasha looked away.

“He said he couldn't afford a legal fight. Eventually, he stopped asking.””

Maya swallowed.

“Did you want him to stop?””

Natasha's face crumpled.

“I wanted him to become the father you deserved. But every time he disappointed you, I had to pick up the pieces. I was angry, Maya.

I was exhausted. And when Chris came into our lives, he made everything easier.””

“Then why did you keep telling me Chris wasn't my father?””

Natasha stared at her hands.

“Because I didn't want you to forget Andre.””

Maya felt tears sting her eyes.

“How could I forget somebody who wasn't there?””

Her mother covered her mouth.

For the first time, Maya saw the full weight of the question land on Natasha.

Before either of them could speak again, Chris entered the kitchen.

He stopped when he saw the folder.

“I see you've started going through the old correspondence.””

Maya looked at him.

“Did you know Mom refused some of Andre's visits?””

“Yes.””

“Did you think she was wrong?””

Chris pulled out a chair.

“I thought both of them made mistakes. Your mother was trying to protect you from disappointment. Andre wanted a place in your life but didn't always do the work required to keep it.””

“Then why didn't you say something?””

“Because it wasn't my place to rewrite your history with your biological father.””

Maya laughed bitterly.

“Apparently, everybody thought it was their place to decide what I was allowed to know.””

Chris accepted the criticism without arguing.

“That's fair.””

Natasha stood abruptly.

“Chris, don't act as if you were innocent in all this. You agreed to the guardianship arrangement because you wanted to make sure you could stay in Maya's life if something happened to me.””

Chris looked at her.

“Yes. Because I loved her.””

“And you knew Andre might see it as a threat.””

“I never used that agreement to keep Andre away from her.””

“But you benefited from it!””

Chris rose slowly.

“Natasha, I never wanted Maya to choose between us. I never wanted her to believe she had to earn my love. And I never wanted to be placed in competition with a man who gave her life.””

“Then why are you questioning me now?””

“Because money is missing from an account meant for her future, and both you and Andre have told different versions of what happened.””

Natasha's face flushed.

“I had bills to pay!””

“What bills?””

“Household bills. Things you didn't know about.””

“Then show us.””

“I don't have to show you everything!””

Maya slammed her palm against the table.

“STOP!””

Both adults fell silent.

Her chest rose and fell as she struggled to control her breathing.

“This is my money. My college savings. My future.

I don't care if you are married or divorced or angry with each other. I want to know where the money went.””

Natasha looked at her daughter.

“Maya, I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

Her mother sat down again.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Finally, she opened the folder to a section Maya hadn't reached yet and removed a printed email dated six months earlier.

The sender was Natasha.

The recipient was a person named Denise Carter.

The subject line read: *Please give me more time.*

Maya began reading.

Denise, I know the payment is overdue. I'm doing everything I can to catch up. Please don't contact Chris. He doesn't know how much I've borrowed, and I'm trying to resolve this before it damages my marriage.

Beneath the email was a reply.

Natasha, I have already extended the deadline twice. I need the remaining balance by the end of the month. If you cannot pay, I will have to discuss other options.

Maya looked up.

“Who is Denise?””

Natasha went rigid.

“An old friend.””

“Why do you owe her money?””

“It's complicated.””

“Everything is complicated with you!””

Maya picked up the next page.

It contained a handwritten list of amounts, dates, and payments. The total at the bottom was more than Maya had ever imagined her mother could owe anyone.

Chris leaned over her shoulder.

His expression changed as he read.

“Natasha,” he said slowly, “is this why you've been taking money from the college account?””

Her mother began to cry.

“I was going to pay it back.””

“How much did you borrow?””

Natasha pressed her hands against her face.

“I don't know anymore.””

Maya stared at her.

“You don't know?””

“I was trying to keep everything together!””

Chris stepped back from the table.

“By using money we'd set aside for Maya?””

“I never wanted her to lose anything!””

“But she may have lost it anyway!””

Natasha's sobs grew louder.

Maya felt no relief in seeing her mother cry. She wanted to comfort her, but every time she looked at the folder, she remembered that her future had been used to cover a problem she hadn't even known existed.

She gathered the papers into a pile.

“I'm taking copies of everything.””

Natasha looked up sharply.

“Why?””

“Because I'm tired of being the only person in this family who doesn't know what's going on.””

She carried the folder upstairs.

At the top of the staircase, her phone vibrated.

A message from Andre appeared.

I need to tell you something about Denise Carter. Your mother didn't borrow that money from a friend.

Maya stopped walking.

Another message arrived.

She borrowed it from me.

Maya's fingers went numb.

May you like

Then Andre sent the message that made her turn around and run back downstairs.

And I have proof that some of the money came from your college account before I ever gave her a dollar.
