Chapter 8: The Child in Room 214

The drive to Phoenix took nearly two hours.

David spent every mile staring at the photograph in his lap.

Two newborn boys.

Two identical birthmarks.

Two lives separated before either child could speak.

And a warning that suggested the story he'd been told was wrong.

Detective Harris drove with both hands on the steering wheel, while a second officer followed in an unmarked vehicle.

“Tell me everything you know about Nathan,” David said.

Harris kept his eyes on the road.

“Nathan Cole inherited a medical investment company from his father. He owns interests in several private clinics, including the facility where Leo was conceived.””

“And the pediatric center?””

“Privately operated. It's used for long-term treatment and specialized care.””

“Why would he be moving a child there today?””

“We believe Daniel has been receiving treatment under a false identity.””

David frowned.

“What kind of treatment?””

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

David looked at the photograph again.

“If Nathan wanted an heir, why didn't he simply take Leo?””

“Because Leo was legally your son. Removing him from your custody would have attracted attention. A child with no verifiable birth history would have been easier to control.””

David's jaw tightened.

“And when Rachel discovered what he'd done?””

“She became a liability.””

The words settled heavily between them.

David looked out the window at the desert landscape rushing past.

He remembered Leo's small hand clutching his shirt in the underground room.

He remembered the boy asking whether he was still his father.

Now he wondered what Daniel had been told about his own family.

Had the other boy spent eight years believing Nathan was his biological father?

Had he been told that his mother had died?

Or had he grown up knowing that someone had stolen him from the life he was supposed to have?

When the facility came into view, David leaned forward.

The building stood behind a high metal fence, surrounded by carefully trimmed shrubs and security cameras. Its sign promised compassionate care for children with complex medical needs.

A black SUV sat near the entrance.

Harris parked across the road.

“Stay behind me,” he ordered.

David opened the door.

“I've waited fourteen months. I'm not standing outside while another child disappears.””

“Then don't make me arrest you for interfering with an investigation.””

David looked at him.

“Would you do the same if it were your child?””

Harris said nothing.

They crossed the road together.

Inside, a receptionist looked up from her desk.

“Good morning. Can I help you?””

Harris displayed his badge.

“Detective Harris, Sedona Police. We're looking for a child named Daniel Cole.””

The receptionist's expression barely changed.

“I'm afraid I can't disclose patient information.””

“We have reason to believe the child is being transferred under fraudulent documentation.””

She reached for the telephone.

“Please wait here.””

Harris placed a hand over the receiver.

“No calls until we speak with your administrator.””

The receptionist stiffened.

“You cannot simply—”

A scream came from the corridor behind her.

David turned.

A young nurse ran past the reception desk, carrying a medical chart.

“Someone call security! Room 214!””

David was already moving.

Harris shouted after him, but David didn't stop.

He followed the nurse down a corridor lined with pastel paintings and closed patient doors.

At Room 214, he found a small boy sitting on a bed, clutching a stuffed rabbit.

The child had dark blond hair, blue eyes, and a faint crescent-shaped birthmark beneath his left ear.

David stopped breathing.

It was Leo's face.

Not similar.

Not reminiscent.

The same face, with the same delicate nose and the same slight crease between the eyebrows.

The boy looked up.

“Who are you?””

David struggled to speak.

“My name is David.””

The nurse moved between them.

“Sir, you can't be in here.””

David barely heard her.

He looked at the child's wrist. A hospital bracelet carried the name Daniel Cole.

“How old are you, buddy?””

“Eight.””

David's knees weakened.

“Do you know a boy named Leo?””

Daniel's expression changed.

He clutched the rabbit more tightly.

“I'm not supposed to talk about him.””

“Why not?””

“Daddy says he's dangerous.””

David crouched, careful not to frighten him.

“Who is your daddy?””

Daniel looked toward the door.

“Nathan.””

Behind David, Harris entered the room with two officers.

“Mr. Vance, step away from the child.””

David obeyed slowly.

Daniel watched him with growing fear.

“Are you taking me away?””

David shook his head.

“No, sweetheart. I'm trying to find out what's happened to you.””

The boy's lower lip trembled.

“Daddy said someone would come for me.””

A shadow appeared in the doorway.

Nathan Cole stood there in a tailored gray suit, his expression perfectly composed.

“Daniel,” he said gently.

“Come here.””

The boy immediately climbed off the bed.

Nathan opened his arms.

“It's all right. These people are confused.””

David stepped between them.

“Don't touch him.””

Nathan's eyes settled on him.

“David Vance. I've heard a great deal about you.””

“Then you know I'm Leo's father.””

Nathan smiled faintly.

“Biologically, no.””

David clenched his fists.

“But I raised him. I searched for him. And you locked him beneath a house.””

Nathan glanced at the officers.

“That's an unfortunate misunderstanding.””

Harris drew his weapon.

“Nathan Cole, you're being detained in connection with the unlawful confinement of a minor, suspected abduction, and the assault on a witness.””

Nathan raised his hands.

“On what evidence?””

Harris held up the photograph.

Nathan's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But David saw it.

The polished businessman was gone for a fraction of a second, replaced by a man who had just realized his secrets were no longer safe.

“Where did you get that?”” Nathan asked.

“From the person who tried to make sure neither boy was found.””

Nathan laughed softly.

“You don't understand what you're holding.””

“Then explain it.””

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“Come here, son.””

Daniel moved toward him, but the nurse caught his shoulder.

“Daniel, stay with me.””

The boy began crying.

“Daddy?””

Nathan's voice softened.

“It's all right. These men want to separate us.””

David knelt beside Daniel.

“Buddy, nobody is going to hurt you.””

Nathan's expression hardened.

“Don't speak to him.””

David looked up.

“Why? Afraid he'll ask questions?””

Nathan stepped closer.

“You have no idea what happened eight years ago.””

“Then tell me.””

Nathan's gaze moved to the photograph.

“The clinic made a mistake. Two boys were born from the same donor arrangement. One was intended for your family. The other was intended for me.””

“You mean you paid to take a child.””

“I paid for a legitimate procedure.””

“You paid for a child.””

Nathan's jaw tightened.

“The clinic's director assured me the arrangements were legal.””

“And when the truth came out?””

Nathan looked away.

David stepped closer.

“You hid one boy underground and raised the other under a false identity.””

“I protected my son.””

“You stole him from his family!””

Nathan's voice rose.

“You think you were the only one who wanted a child? My wife died before we could adopt. I was left with money, a name, and an empty house. When I learned there was a child who could be mine, I did what I had to do.””

David stared at him.

“So you took Daniel.””

“I gave him a home.””

“You gave him a lie.””

Nathan's face twisted.

“And what did you give Leo? A father who couldn't even keep him safe?””

The words struck like a fist.

David took one step forward.

Harris caught his arm.

“Don't.””

Nathan smiled.

“There it is. The truth hurts, doesn't it?””

David looked at Daniel.

The boy had begun crying silently, listening to every word.

David forced himself to breathe.

“Daniel, do you want to come with me?””

Nathan laughed.

“He doesn't know you.””

Daniel looked from Nathan to David.

Then he whispered, “I know Leo.””

David froze.

“What?””

Daniel reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a folded drawing.

It showed two boys standing beside a house. One wore a blue shirt; the other wore a green one. Above them, a child's handwriting spelled two names.

LEO AND DANIEL.

David stared at the paper.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“Mommy gave it to me.””

Nathan went completely still.

David slowly turned toward him.

“Your mother is alive?””

Daniel nodded.

“She comes when Daddy is away. She says she's trying to find Leo.””

Nathan lunged for the drawing.

Harris seized him and forced him against the wall.

“Don't move!””

Daniel screamed.

The officers handcuffed Nathan while the nurse pulled the boy close.

David knelt beside him.

“Daniel, what's your mother's name?””

The boy whispered a name David had not expected.

“Rachel.””

David felt the room tilt.

Rachel Morgan, the nurse rescued from Elena's underground room, had been trying to find the child she had hidden.

But if Rachel was Daniel's mother, then the fertility clinic's records had concealed more than a donor mistake.

They had concealed a birth.

A family.

And possibly a crime that had begun long before Leo disappeared.

Harris received a call and listened in silence.

Then his face changed.

“Mr. Vance, we have a problem.””

David stood.

“What now?””

“Rachel Morgan has disappeared from police protection.””

David looked at Daniel, who was clutching the drawing against his chest.

“Where did she go?””

Harris lowered the phone.

“She left a message.””

“What did it say?””

The detective hesitated.

Then he read the words aloud.

“Tell David the child he raised is not the only secret. The real father of both boys is still alive.””

David stared at him.

Nathan, still handcuffed, began laughing.

Not nervously.

Not bitterly.

With genuine amusement.

“You see?”” he whispered.

“You still don't understand.””

He leaned toward David as the officers dragged him toward the door.

“Ask Rachel who signed the original birth certificate.””

May you like

Then Nathan smiled.

“And ask your own father why he paid the clinic to destroy it.””
