Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Steel Door

David had spent fourteen months imagining the worst possible explanations for his son's disappearance.

None of them had prepared him for the possibility that Elena had not acted alone.

He stepped toward the chained door.

“Who are you?”” he called.

A weak cough answered him.

“Please,” the woman whispered.

“Get me out of here.””

Elena moved between David and the door.

“You cannot open that.””

David stared at her.

“Who is behind it?””

“Nobody you need to worry about.””

“Then unlock it.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because if she gets out, she'll destroy everything.””

David looked at Leo. The boy had pressed himself into the corner, wrapping both arms around his knees.

“Stay with me,” David told him.

Leo shook his head frantically.

“She hurts people.””

Elena turned sharply.

“Leo, stop lying!””

The boy screamed.

David surged forward, placing himself between them.

“Don't you dare speak to him like that.””

For the first time, Elena seemed to realize that the brother who had always defended her was gone.

In his place stood a father who had found his child imprisoned beneath a house.

David seized the chain and pulled. The padlock rattled, but the door held firm.

“Where's the key?””

Elena said nothing.

David grabbed the flashlight from the floor and pointed it at her.

“Where is it?””

“In the kitchen.””

“Which drawer?””

“The second one.””

David backed toward the stairs without taking his eyes off her.

“If you move toward Leo, I'll make sure the police know exactly what you did.””

Elena's lips parted.

“You don't understand the people involved.””

“Then start explaining.””

He climbed the stairs, reached the living room, and ran into the kitchen.

The second drawer contained batteries, spare keys, and a ring with a small black tag. One key bore a strip of red tape.

He snatched it.

Then he saw the phone lying on the counter.

His phone.

Elena had dropped it while following him downstairs.

The screen showed three missed calls from Sarah.

David called her back.

She answered immediately.

“David? Where are you? I've been trying to reach you for twenty minutes.””

“Sarah, listen carefully. I've found Leo.””

Silence.

Then a strangled sound.

“What did you say?””

“I found him. He's alive. He's here at Elena's house.””

Sarah began crying so hard she could barely form words.

“Put him on the phone. Please. Let me hear him.””

“I will. But I need you to call the police and get here with them. Don't come alone.””

“Why? What's happening?””

“There's another person locked downstairs.””

A pause.

Then Sarah whispered, “David, you need to leave that house.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“Do you hear me? Take Leo and leave. Don't open any other doors.””

“How do you know about the door?””

Sarah's breathing changed.

For a moment, David heard nothing but the hum of the kitchen refrigerator.

Then she said, “Because Elena told me what she'd done.””

David gripped the counter.

“She told you?””

“Not everything. She said Leo was safe. She said he was somewhere nobody could find him.””

“You knew my son was alive?””

“No! David, I swear to you, I thought she meant she'd found someone who could protect him. I didn't know he was under the house.””

David closed his eyes.

His wife had been grieving beside him for fourteen months. He had held her while she cried over Leo's empty bed. He had watched her place fresh flowers beside his photograph every Sunday.

Now he couldn't tell whether the woman on the phone was terrified, guilty, or both.

“Sarah,” he said slowly, “what did Elena tell you?””

Before she could answer, the call disconnected.

David stared at the screen.

Then a message appeared from an unknown number.

*IF YOU OPEN THAT DOOR, YOU'LL LEARN WHY LEO HAD TO DISAPPEAR. ASK YOUR WIFE WHAT HAPPENED AT THE HOSPITAL.*

David read it twice.

The hospital.

His mind jumped back to the week before Leo vanished, when Sarah had taken Maya to an emergency room after a playground accident. Leo had stayed with Elena for the afternoon.

David had never thought the visit mattered.

He hurried downstairs.

Elena stood beside the chained door, holding a kitchen knife.

David stopped on the last step.

“Put it down.””

She looked at the blade as though she had forgotten it was in her hand.

Then she placed it on the floor.

“David, please. You need to understand something before you open that door.””

“I'm done listening to your excuses.””

“It's not an excuse.””

“Then what is it?””

Elena looked at Leo.

“Your son wasn't the only person I was trying to keep safe.””

David inserted the key into the padlock.

“Safe from whom?””

“From the truth.””

He turned the key.

The lock opened with a sharp click.

Elena lunged forward, but David shoved her away and pulled the chain free.

The steel door groaned as he pushed it inward.

The room beyond was smaller than the chamber where Leo had been kept. A narrow cot stood against the wall. Empty water bottles covered the floor, and a single bare bulb flickered overhead.

A woman sat on the cot with her wrists bound by plastic restraints.

Her hair was matted. Her face was bruised. Yet when she lifted her head, David recognized her.

Not because he knew her personally.

Because he had seen her face on television.

Three months earlier, a local news station had reported that a pediatric nurse named Rachel Morgan had vanished after allegedly stealing confidential medical records from a private clinic.

The police had suspected she had fled the state.

Now she stared at David with hollow eyes.

“Thank God,” she whispered.

David stepped into the room.

“Who did this to you?””

Rachel glanced at Elena.

“Your sister.””

Elena stood in the doorway, trembling.

Rachel swallowed and looked directly at David.

“Your son was never supposed to be taken,” she said.

“Elena was supposed to bring him here for one night. That was the plan.””

David felt his blood turn cold.

“One night for what?””

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

“To make your family believe Leo had been kidnapped by a stranger. To force you to pay for something your wife did.””

David turned toward Elena.

“What did Sarah do?””

Elena shook her head desperately.

“Don't listen to her.””

Rachel leaned forward, her restraints scraping against the cot.

“Your wife wasn't the target, David. She was the reason they chose Leo.””

“Who are they?””

Rachel opened her mouth.

Then a loud crash sounded from upstairs.

Footsteps pounded across the living room.

A man's voice shouted, “Elena! We know he's down here!””

Elena went rigid.

Rachel's face drained of color.

“Oh, God,” she whispered.

“They found us.””

David pulled Leo behind him.

“How many people are coming?””

Rachel stared at the staircase.

“Enough to make sure none of you ever leave this house.””

Then the lights went out.

And in the darkness, David felt someone seize his son's hand.

A familiar voice whispered beside his ear.

“David, don't move. I'm here to help.””

It was Sarah.

May you like

But before he could answer, Leo screamed.

“Dad! That's not Mommy!””
