Chapter 6: The Paper That Changed Everything

Darius almost missed the document.

It was folded beneath a piece of tissue paper at the bottom of the box, tucked into a plain manila envelope with no name on the front.

He lifted it out.

The paper was old, creased at the edges, and marked with a date from several years earlier. It bore Renee's signature at the bottom.

Darius recognized the handwriting immediately.

“What's that?”” Imani asked.

“I'm not sure yet.””

He unfolded the document.

The first paragraph contained language about guardianship and the care of a minor child in the event of a parent's death or incapacity. The second referred to a family member who had been considered as a potential caregiver.

Darius read the name twice.

His sister, Denise.

He looked up.

“Why would your aunt's name be on this?”” he asked Imani, forgetting for a moment that the document was not something she could explain.

Imani shook her head.

“Is something wrong?””

“No, sweetheart. I just need to understand what I'm looking at.””

He read further.

Renee had written a letter expressing her wishes about Imani's care if something happened to both parents. It was not a court order, nor did it automatically determine legal custody. But it was clear evidence of the person she had trusted to help protect their daughter.

Darius felt a wave of confusion.

He and Renee had discussed guardianship during her illness. He remembered their conversations about who would care for Imani if he were ever unable to do so. He had assumed the arrangements they discussed were reflected in the documents they signed together.

He had never known about this letter.

At the bottom, Renee had added a handwritten note.

Darius, please make sure Imani always has a safe place to go if she ever feels she cannot tell you something. Denise knows what I want for our daughter. Please don't let anyone make Imani feel that loving me is something she must hide.

Darius read the final sentence again.

Then a third time.

His hands began to tremble.

“Daddy?”” Imani whispered.

He folded the paper carefully.

“I'm okay, baby.””

But he wasn't.

He thought about the threats Imani had described, the locked refrigerator, the photograph, the hidden letters. He thought about how Felicia had insisted she was merely trying to make the family feel normal.

Then he looked at the date on Renee's note.

It had been written only weeks before she died.

Darius remembered those final weeks clearly. He had been overwhelmed by medical appointments, insurance forms, and the terror of losing his wife. He had trusted the professionals helping them and believed he had taken care of everything Renee had asked.

But he had not remembered seeing this particular letter.

He needed to know why it had been hidden.

“Imani, stay here for a minute.””

She caught his hand.

“Are you going to leave?””

The question stopped him.

He crouched beside her.

“No. I'm going to talk to Felicia, and then I'm going to call Aunt Denise. I'm not leaving you alone.””

Imani searched his face.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

He waited until she nodded before standing.

Felicia was still in the living room. She had moved to the window, where she stood with her arms wrapped around herself.

Darius held up the document.

“What is this?””

She turned.

The moment she saw the paper, the color drained from her face.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the box you locked away.””

She took a step toward him.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

“Darius, that's a private document.””

“It has my name on it, my daughter's name on it, and my late wife's signature. Explain why you hid it.””

Felicia's breathing grew shallow.

“I didn't hide anything.””

“It's in a locked cabinet.””

“I was keeping the box safe.””

“From whom?””

She looked toward the kitchen.

Darius followed her gaze.

“From Imani?””

“No!””

“Then why were you so afraid of me opening it?””

Felicia's hands shook.

“You don't understand what you're looking at.””

“Then help me understand.””

She pressed her lips together.

Darius waited, but she said nothing.

“Does Denise know this letter exists?””

Felicia looked away.

The silence was answer enough to make him suspicious, though not enough to establish what had happened.

“I'm calling her,” he said.

“Don't.””

The word came out too quickly.

Darius stared at her.

“Why not?””

“Because she's going to make everything worse.””

“Worse than what?””

Felicia's eyes filled.

“She's always hated me.””

“Denise has never been anything but polite to you.””

“That's because she pretends to be polite!””

Darius shook his head.

“This isn't about whether Denise likes you. It's about my daughter.””

“You're letting everybody turn you against me!””

“Nobody is turning me against you. I'm listening to what Imani has told me, and I'm looking at what you've admitted.””

“I made mistakes!””

“Then tell me the truth about this letter.””

Felicia looked down at her hands.

For a moment, he thought she might finally speak honestly.

Instead, she whispered, “Renee never wanted you to marry me.””

Darius stared at her.

“What?””

“Your first wife. She didn't want you to marry me.””

“Renee died before you and I even started dating.””

“She knew what kind of person I was.””

Darius felt a chill move through him.

“What are you talking about?””

Felicia shook her head.

“Nothing.””

“You just said she knew what kind of person you were. Explain that.””

“I shouldn't have said anything.””

“Felicia!””

She recoiled.

Darius lowered his voice, but his anger was unmistakable.

“You're going to stop doing this. No more half-answers. No more blaming my daughter. No more pretending you can make a statement like that and then walk away.””

Felicia began crying.

“I didn't mean for any of this to happen.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

She covered her face.

Darius waited.

After several seconds, she lowered her hands.

“When I first met you, I knew you still loved her.””

“Of course I loved her. She was my wife.””

“And I knew that if I wanted a future with you, I would have to live with her memory.””

“That's something you should have accepted before marrying me.””

“I thought I could!””

Her voice broke.

“I thought once we were married, things would be different. I thought you'd finally let me be part of this family.””

“You were part of this family.””

“Not really!”” she cried.

“Every time I tried to establish rules, you acted like I was attacking Imani. Every time I asked for something to change, you told me to be patient.””

Darius stared at her.

“So you decided to make Imani afraid of you?””

“No!””

“You locked away food. You threatened to send her away. You took her mother's photograph and hid her letters.””

“I was angry!””

“She's a child!””

“I KNOW!””

Felicia's scream echoed through the room.

She immediately looked toward the kitchen, where Imani sat quietly at the table.

Darius stepped closer.

“Keep your voice down.””

Felicia's face twisted.

“You don't understand how hard it is to love someone who will never love you the way you want.””

Darius's expression became cold.

“You cannot demand that a child love you by taking away the things she loves.””

Felicia sank onto the sofa.

For a few moments, she cried without speaking.

Darius looked down at Renee's letter.

He had come into the house believing he was confronting a cruel argument over dinner. He now had evidence of a pattern of behavior, a hidden collection of family keepsakes, and a document whose purpose he needed to verify.

But one question remained.

Why had Felicia reacted so desperately to the letter naming Denise?

He took out his phone.

“I'm calling my sister.””

Felicia jumped to her feet.

“Darius, please!””

He stopped dialing.

“Tell me why I shouldn't.””

She looked at the phone, then at the document.

“Because if you call Denise, she'll tell you what Renee said about me.””

Darius's thumb hovered over the screen.

“What did Renee say about you?””

Felicia's face crumpled.

“I can't.””

“Can't, or won't?””

She opened her mouth, but no answer came.

From the kitchen, Imani's voice drifted into the living room.

“Daddy?””

He turned immediately.

“I'm here, baby.””

She stood in the doorway, holding Renee's photograph and the letter close to her chest.

“There's something else I didn't tell you.””

Darius walked toward her.

“What is it?””

Imani glanced at Felicia, then back at him.

“She didn't just take Mommy's letters.””

Her voice trembled.

“She made me help her look for something.””

Darius stopped.

“Look for what?””

Imani's eyes filled with fresh tears.

“Mommy's last letter. The one she wrote before she died.””

Behind him, Felicia made a strangled sound.

Darius turned slowly.

May you like

His wife was staring at Imani as though the child had just revealed something she had believed would remain buried forever.

And in that moment, Darius understood that the document in his hand might be only one piece of a much larger truth.
