Chapter 7: What Vanessa Lost

Vanessa arrived at 6:27.

Three minutes early.

Marcus noticed because he noticed everything now.

The boys were upstairs with Tasha.

Marcus had wanted them out of the house.

Caleb refused.

"If Mom is talking about me, I want to be here.""

Marcus did not like it.

But he understood.

So Tasha stayed upstairs with both boys, the bedroom door open, television playing low enough to hide adult voices without completely isolating them.

Vanessa entered wearing the same burgundy coat from the night everything changed.

Marcus hated that.

He hated how an ordinary piece of clothing could become attached to a memory.

She set her purse down.

"You told Caleb he could stay here?""

Marcus stood near the dining room table.

"I didn't tell him anything.""

"You shouldn't be giving him the choice.""

"He asked.""

"He's eight.""

"Then why was he old enough to carry your lies?""

Vanessa winced.

Good, Marcus thought.

Then immediately hated himself for thinking it.

She removed her coat.

"You said you know about Devin.""

Marcus pointed toward the chair.

"Sit.""

"I'm not one of your employees.""

"No. Employees don't usually sleep with their exes while taking eighteen thousand dollars out of my house.""

Vanessa went pale.

"So he told you.""

Marcus laughed.

"That's your response?""

"It wasn't like that.""

"Wasn't like what?""

She pulled out the chair but did not sit.

Marcus continued.

"Did you sleep with him?""

Vanessa looked away.

"One time.""

"March?""

She nodded.

"At least you two remembered the same month.""

"Marcus.""

"Did you pay his car note?""

"I helped.""

"With whose money?""

"Our money.""

"No.""

His voice sharpened.

"Don't do that.""

"It was in our account.""

"Money we agreed was for this family.""

"Caleb is this family.""

"Devin's Charger isn't.""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"I was trying to get his father back on his feet.""

"By giving him almost five hundred dollars every month?""

"He needed transportation.""

"He needed a Honda.""

Despite everything, Vanessa almost smiled.

Marcus didn't.

Her expression disappeared.

"How much went to him?""

She crossed her arms.

"You already know everything.""

"No. I know pieces.""

Marcus slid a notebook across the table.

"I want numbers.""

Vanessa stared at it.

"You think this is court?""

"It might be.""

Her face changed.

"You're serious.""

"Very.""

She sat.

For a moment, she looked smaller.

Marcus hated that too.

He wanted anger to make her unfamiliar.

Instead he could still recognize the woman he loved.

That was the cruelest part.

Vanessa whispered, "About twelve thousand.""

Marcus stared.

"To Devin?""

"Mostly.""

"And the rest?""

"An apartment deposit.""

His stomach dropped.

"What apartment?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus waited.

"I looked at a place.""

"For you and Caleb?""

She nodded.

"When?""

"August.""

August.

Jordan had been calling Tasha asking to stay with her that same summer.

Marcus felt something click.

"You were planning to leave.""

"I was thinking about it.""

"And you were treating Jordan worse because what? You wanted a reason?""

"No.""

"You wanted Caleb to hate this house enough to go with you?""

"No!""

"Then explain it.""

Vanessa pushed back from the table.

"You think all of this started because I'm evil.""

"I don't know what to think.""

"I was drowning here.""

Marcus stared.

She wiped at her eyes.

"I came into this house believing love would be enough. It wasn't.""

He said nothing.

"I married you and suddenly everything I did was compared to somebody who couldn't make mistakes anymore.""

"Danielle was not competing with you.""

"I know that now.""

"No, you knew it then.""

Vanessa flinched.

Marcus's voice hardened.

"You knew a dead woman wasn't competing with you. You chose to compete with her anyway.""

Vanessa looked down.

Marcus continued.

"And you used Jordan as the scoreboard.""

Tears slid down her face.

"I resented him.""

There.

The sentence finally existed.

Marcus felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Vanessa covered her face.

"I hated that he could say her name and change the whole room.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"He was grieving.""

"I know.""

"He was seven.""

"I know.""

"You took food from a nine-year-old because you were jealous of his dead mother.""

"I know!""

Her shout cracked.

Upstairs, footsteps shifted.

Marcus lowered his voice immediately.

Vanessa began sobbing.

Not the careful tears she used when cornered.

This was ugly.

Breathless.

Her shoulders shaking.

Marcus remained where he was.

Months ago, he would have crossed the room.

Held her.

Fixed something.

Now he could not.

"I didn't start by taking his food," she whispered.

Marcus said nothing.

"It started with little things.""

She wiped her face.

"If Caleb had a bad day, I'd give him dessert first. If Jordan talked back, I'd give him extra chores.""

Marcus stared.

"Then I started thinking Jordan was testing me.""

"By existing?""

Her face twisted.

"You don't have to make every word cruel.""

"I don't have to make it anything.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"You did that.""

Vanessa looked away.

He asked, "Why tell Caleb Jordan hated him?""

"I was scared Jordan actually did.""

"Did you ask him?""

"No.""

"Did Caleb?""

"No.""

"So you invented it.""

Vanessa nodded once.

Marcus swallowed.

"And Devin?""

She went still.

"Was that about Danielle too?""

"No.""

"Then what?""

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

Marcus waited.

"Devin knew me before Caleb.""

"Congratulations.""

"He knew me before I was somebody's second wife.""

Marcus stared.

"That is your excuse?""

"It's not an excuse.""

"Then stop presenting it like one.""

She wiped her nose.

"I felt like myself around him.""

"So you slept with him.""

"Once.""

"Stop saying once like it changes what it was.""

Vanessa lowered her head.

Marcus sat across from her.

For a while neither spoke.

Then he asked the question that had been haunting him since the bank parking lot.

"Did you ever love me?""

Vanessa looked up instantly.

"Yes.""

No hesitation.

That hurt worse.

Marcus laughed under his breath.

"That's the problem, isn't it?""

"What?""

"People think love automatically makes them safe.""

Vanessa began crying again.

"I did love you.""

"I believe you.""

Her eyes widened.

Marcus continued.

"And you still hurt every person in this house.""

The room went quiet.

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Then Caleb appeared on the staircase.

Tasha stood several steps behind him.

Marcus rose.

"Buddy, you're supposed to be upstairs.""

Caleb looked at his mother.

"I heard.""

Vanessa's face collapsed.

"Caleb—"

"You gave Dad's money to my real dad?""

Nobody moved.

Marcus wanted to intervene.

But Caleb was already walking down.

Vanessa stood.

"Baby, listen—"

"Why?""

"I was trying to help him.""

"Why didn't you help Jordan?""

The question stopped her.

Caleb's eyes filled.

"You gave me his stuff.""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

"You told me he hated me.""

"Caleb—"

"You told me Dad loved him more.""

Marcus shut his eyes.

That one was new.

Vanessa's face went white.

Caleb continued.

"You said that's why I needed you.""

Tasha covered her mouth behind him.

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

"Did you tell him that?""

Vanessa cried silently.

Caleb stepped backward.

"I thought Dad didn't want me.""

Marcus crossed the room.

"No.""

Caleb looked at him.

"No, son. Never.""

The boy's face crumpled.

Marcus pulled him into his chest.

Caleb clung to his shirt.

Vanessa reached toward them.

Then stopped herself.

"Caleb, I'm sorry.""

The boy buried his face deeper.

Marcus looked at Vanessa over his head.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that apologies did not restore what they named.

Marcus held Caleb until his breathing slowed.

Then he said, "Tasha, take him upstairs.""

Caleb whispered, "I don't want to go with Mom.""

Vanessa turned away.

Marcus crouched.

"Nobody's deciding tonight.""

Caleb shook his head.

"I don't want to.""

Marcus looked at Tasha.

She understood.

She took Caleb's hand.

He went reluctantly.

When they were gone, Vanessa sat again.

Her eyes were swollen.

Marcus looked at her.

"You need help.""

She nodded.

"Real help.""

Another nod.

"Counseling. Not because it saves us. Because you did damage you don't understand yet.""

"I'll go.""

"Good.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"What about us?""

Marcus stayed silent too long.

She already knew.

"I filed today.""

Her lips parted.

Marcus's voice shook despite his effort.

"For divorce.""

Vanessa stared at him.

He expected shouting.

Instead she whispered, "Okay.""

That single word almost destroyed him.

She reached for her coat.

At the door, she stopped.

"Can I say goodnight to Caleb?""

Marcus considered it.

Then called upstairs.

Caleb did not come down.

Vanessa waited.

Nothing.

She nodded as if receiving a sentence.

Then opened the door.

Before stepping outside, she looked back.

"Tell Jordan I'm sorry too.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"You tell him when he's ready to hear you.""

Vanessa nodded.

Then left.

Marcus locked the door.

Not because he feared she would return.

Because sometimes a boundary needed a sound.

The deadbolt clicked.

Upstairs, one of the boys began to cry.

May you like

Marcus closed his eyes.

Then climbed the stairs toward them.
