Chapter 9: The Voice Behind the Recording
The recording played again.
Russell's voice was clear.
"I authorize the transfer of funds from the Brooks Family Trust to the designated account.""
Then a faint sound.
A chair scraping.
A woman's voice.
"Make sure Lena never finds out.""
Quentin looked at Celeste.
She stood frozen.
Russell listened again.
Then he whispered, "That's you.""
Celeste shook her head.
"That's not what you think.""
Russell looked devastated.
"You used my voice.""
"I didn't.""
"You recorded me.""
Celeste stepped forward.
"Russell, you were going to do this anyway.""
He stared at her.
"What?""
"You told me the trust needed to be changed. You said Lena had too much control over everything.""
Russell looked toward Harold.
"That's not true.""
Celeste laughed.
"Don't start pretending you were innocent. You wanted the money too.""
Quentin stepped between them.
"How much of this did Dad know?""
Celeste looked at him.
"Your father knew the trust existed. He knew the document had been drafted. He knew we were trying to change things.""
Russell lowered his head.
"Yes.""
Lena closed her eyes.
There it was.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not a single mistake.
A series of decisions.
And her son had been caught in the middle of them.
Quentin turned toward his father.
"Tell me everything.""
Russell sat down.
For several seconds, he looked at his hands.
Then he began.
"Your grandfather never trusted me with money.""
Quentin frowned.
"What?""
"He believed I was irresponsible. When he created the trust, he gave me administrative responsibilities but placed restrictions on what I could do with the assets.""
Harold nodded.
"That is correct.""
Russell continued.
"After he died, I discovered that I couldn't access the properties or investment funds for personal use. I could only manage them according to the trust.""
Quentin stared.
"So you wanted to change the trust.""
"At first, yes. I thought I should have more control.""
Lena spoke quietly.
"Your father made sure I had less.""
Russell looked at her.
"I didn't understand what James wanted.""
"He wanted Quentin protected.""
"I know that now.""
Quentin shook his head.
"You knew it then. Grandpa explained everything in his letter.""
Russell looked surprised.
"What letter?""
Quentin frowned.
"The one he left me when I graduated high school. He told me to keep it until I was old enough to understand.""
Harold looked up.
"Do you still have it?""
"At home.""
Quentin looked at Lena.
"Mom, Grandpa wrote that he wanted you to be secure because he knew how hard you worked. He said nobody should ever be able to make you feel that raising me had been a mistake.""
Lena covered her mouth.
She had never known James had written such a thing.
Russell looked away.
"I didn't know he wrote that.""
Quentin's voice hardened.
"Maybe you should have.""
Celeste interrupted.
"Can we stop pretending the trust was some sacred family treasure? Russell was your father's son. He deserved something.""
Harold answered calmly.
"Mr. Brooks did receive authority to administer the trust. That does not mean he could redirect its assets.""
Celeste looked at him.
"You lawyers always have something to say.""
Harold didn't react.
"Because the rules matter.""
Quentin picked up the tablet.
"Who recorded Dad's voice?""
Celeste remained silent.
Russell looked at her.
"Was it you?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
Harold examined the recording details.
"The audio file was created on a device registered to a company account.""
Quentin looked closer.
"Which company?""
Harold read the name.
"Celeste Russell Consulting.""
Simone frowned.
"That's your business?""
Celeste nodded reluctantly.
"I use that company for event planning.""
Harold continued.
"The device was registered at the address of the Brooks family residence.""
Russell looked stunned.
"Your office tablet?""
Celeste said nothing.
Quentin looked at his father.
"How did she get your voice?""
Russell swallowed.
"She used to record our conversations.""
"Why?""
"She said she wanted to keep notes about household expenses and business arrangements.""
Harold leaned forward.
"Do you know whether she had access to your voice recordings?""
Russell nodded.
"She had recordings from meetings. I never thought anything of it.""
Celeste suddenly became furious.
"You gave me those recordings!""
"I didn't give you permission to use them for a bank authorization.""
"You said we needed to protect our future!""
Russell looked at her.
"Our future?""
She gestured toward Quentin.
"Do you think your son would have shared anything with me? Do you think Lena would ever have accepted me as family?""
Lena stepped forward.
"Why did you need my acceptance to love Quentin?""
Celeste stared at her.
"Because you made sure there was never room for anyone else.""
Lena shook her head.
"I worked nights. I raised my son. I didn't spend my life plotting against you.""
Celeste's voice rose.
"You had everything!""
Lena looked at her with quiet disbelief.
"Everything?""
She glanced down at her hands.
"I had a small apartment. Two jobs. A secondhand car that broke down every winter.
I had hospital bills, rent, and a son who needed me. I had no husband beside me for most of his childhood.""
She paused.
"But I had Quentin.""
Her eyes filled.
"And that was enough.""
Quentin took her hand.
Celeste looked away.
Simone approached her.
"Did you ever think that if you had simply treated Lena with respect, you might have had the family relationship you wanted?""
Celeste laughed bitterly.
"Respect? I spent twenty years being second.""
Simone shook her head.
"No. You spent twenty years believing love was a competition.""
Harold's phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
Then he looked at Quentin.
"The bank has completed a preliminary review.""
"What did they find?""
"The pending transfer has been permanently frozen pending investigation. The emergency-contact amendment has also been suspended.""
Quentin exhaled.
"And the trust?""
"Your mother's original interest remains intact. No valid amendment has been registered.""
Lena closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Quentin embraced her.
"It's okay, Mom.""
She shook her head.
"No, baby. It isn't okay that you had to go through this.""
He held her tighter.
"I believed a message from a phone instead of asking you what happened.""
"You were confused.""
"I should have trusted you.""
Lena touched his face.
"You came to me tonight. That's what matters.""
Then Russell stood.
He walked toward Lena.
"Can we talk?""
Quentin immediately moved closer to his mother.
"What do you want?""
Russell looked at him.
"I need to apologize.""
Lena watched him.
"For what?""
Russell swallowed.
"For allowing Celeste to interfere. For signing that affidavit. For not protecting you when I knew she was trying to change the trust.""
Lena stared at him.
"And for the message?""
Russell looked down.
"I didn't send it.""
"But you knew it wasn't mine.""
He closed his eyes.
"I suspected.""
Lena's expression hardened.
"You suspected your son was being told his mother didn't want him anymore, and you said nothing?""
Russell began crying.
"I was afraid.""
Lena shook her head.
"You were afraid of losing your marriage. I was afraid of losing my son. We were not afraid of the same thing.""
Russell stepped backward.
Then Celeste spoke.
"Russell, don't let her do this.""
He turned.
"What?""
"Don't let her make you the villain. You were involved too.""
Russell stared at her.
For the first time, he didn't defend her.
He looked toward Harold.
"I want to cooperate with the investigation.""
Celeste's face changed.
"You're choosing them?""
Russell shook his head.
"I'm choosing the truth.""
She laughed.
"You think they'll forgive you?""
"No.""
"Then what do you have left?""
Russell looked at Quentin.
"My son.""
Quentin didn't move.
"You don't get to use that word to escape what you did.""
Russell nodded slowly.
"I know.""
Celeste grabbed her purse.
"I'm leaving.""
Harold stepped aside.
Nobody tried to stop her.
But as she reached the door, Quentin spoke.
"Celeste.""
She turned.
He looked at her for a long moment.
"You wanted everyone to call you my mother tonight.""
Her eyes filled.
"Yes.""
"Then you should have remembered what a mother is supposed to do.""
Celeste's face crumpled.
She opened the door and disappeared into the hallway.
For several seconds, the room remained silent.
Then Simone's phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
It was a message from an unknown number.
She opened it.
Her expression changed immediately.
Quentin noticed.
"What is it?""
Simone slowly turned the phone toward him.
The message read:
Your wedding isn't the only thing Celeste planned. Ask your father what happened to the original trust letter from James Brooks.
Quentin looked at Russell.
His father went completely still.
"There's no reason to bring that up," Russell whispered.
Quentin stared at him.
"What original letter?""
Russell sat down.
And Lena, who had spent the entire night learning how many things had been hidden from her, realized the final secret might be the one that explained everything.
May you like
Because Russell wasn't afraid of the forged document anymore.
He was afraid of what the original letter said.
