Chapter 7: The Money Behind the Motherhood
Harold placed the document in the center of the table.
Nobody reached for it.
The heading read:
*THE BROOKS FAMILY LEGACY TRUST.*
Quentin stared at the paper.
"I've never heard of this.""
Russell slowly sat down.
"Your grandfather established it.""
"My grandfather?""
"Yes. Before he died.""
Quentin looked at Lena.
She appeared just as confused.
Harold opened the folder.
"Your grandfather, James Brooks, established the trust shortly before his death. It was intended to provide financial security for Quentin and preserve certain family assets.""
"What assets?"" Quentin asked.
"Two rental properties, an investment portfolio, and a commercial building in Atlanta. The trust has grown considerably over the years.""
Harold turned another page.
"The current estimated value is approximately four million dollars.""
Simone covered her mouth.
Quentin stared.
"Four million?""
Harold nodded.
"Your grandfather made you the primary beneficiary. However, he also established conditions concerning the administration of the trust.""
Russell finally spoke.
"Your grandfather wanted Lena to have a protected interest in the family assets.""
Lena looked at him.
"What?""
Russell avoided her eyes.
"James believed you had sacrificed everything to raise Quentin. He wanted you protected.""
Harold pointed to a paragraph.
"Under the original trust arrangement, Lena retained a lifetime financial interest in certain properties. Quentin would become the principal beneficiary upon reaching the specified age, subject to the trust's conditions.""
Quentin frowned.
"Then where does Celeste come into this?""
Harold turned to the final page.
"She doesn't.""
Celeste's expression changed.
"That's not correct.""
Harold looked at her.
"Mrs. Russell, your name does not appear in the original trust.""
Celeste shook her head.
"Russell told me I was included.""
"Included how?""
"As a beneficiary.""
Harold examined the document.
"That would require a valid amendment.""
Celeste looked toward Russell.
"Tell him.""
Russell remained silent.
"Russell!""
He finally looked up.
"There was a proposed amendment.""
Harold's expression hardened.
"Yes. There was. But it was never executed.""
Quentin leaned forward.
"What amendment?""
Harold removed another document.
"This proposal would have changed the distribution of certain assets if Lena voluntarily relinquished her interest.""
Lena's face went pale.
"That's what the fake document was for?""
Harold nodded.
"Apparently.""
Quentin looked at his father.
"So you and Celeste were trying to get Mom removed from the trust?""
Russell rubbed his forehead.
"I was trying to settle the family situation.""
"Stop calling it that!""
Quentin struck the table with his palm.
"You were trying to take money that Grandpa wanted Mom to have!""
Russell flinched.
Celeste stood.
"That's not what happened.""
Quentin turned toward her.
"Then explain why you needed Mom's signature.""
Celeste folded her arms.
"Because I spent twenty years helping your father maintain that family. I deserved recognition.""
"Recognition isn't four million dollars.""
Her face reddened.
"You have no idea what I gave up.""
Lena looked at her.
"Neither do you.""
Celeste laughed bitterly.
"Oh, here we go again.""
Lena stepped forward.
"When Quentin was born, I was twenty-six. I worked two jobs. I wore the same winter coat for seven years because I needed money for his school supplies. I used to eat crackers for dinner so he could have a proper meal.""
She paused.
"When Russell left, I didn't ask him for revenge. I didn't tell Quentin to hate his father. I didn't demand that anyone recognize what I had done.""
Her voice trembled.
"I just wanted my son to grow up knowing he was loved.""
Quentin took her hand.
Celeste looked away.
Harold cleared his throat.
"There is something else you need to understand. The trust contains a clause preventing anyone from obtaining an interest through a fraudulent parental relinquishment.""
Quentin frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"It means that even if the document Celeste circulated were accepted by someone who didn't examine the original records, it would not automatically change the trust.""
Harold tapped the page.
"The trust specifically requires independent verification of any amendment affecting Lena's interest.""
Russell looked troubled.
"Then why did the bank accept the paperwork?""
Harold turned toward him.
"Because the bank received a certified document.""
Celeste immediately said, "Exactly.""
Harold shook his head.
"An apparently certified document. I have already contacted the notary whose stamp appears on the copy.""
Quentin leaned closer.
"And?""
"The notary says she did not certify this document.""
Silence.
Lena looked at Celeste.
"You forged a notary's certification too?""
Celeste shook her head.
"I didn't.""
Harold removed his glasses.
"Then perhaps you can explain how your email address appears in the submission records.""
Celeste's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Simone moved closer to Quentin.
"Why would the bank accept it without contacting Lena?""
Harold answered carefully.
"Because the person submitting the document also included an affidavit claiming Lena had voluntarily withdrawn from family financial matters.""
"Who signed the affidavit?"" Quentin asked.
Harold turned the page.
"Russell Brooks.""
Quentin stared at his father.
"You signed a statement saying Mom agreed?""
Russell nodded faintly.
"I was told the arrangement had already been discussed.""
"By whom?""
"Celeste.""
Quentin looked at him in disbelief.
"You signed a legal statement without asking my mother?""
Russell lowered his head.
"I believed my wife.""
Lena gave a small, painful laugh.
"You believed your wife, but you couldn't believe the woman who raised your son?""
Russell looked at her.
"I made a terrible mistake.""
"No," Lena said.
"You made several. You watched him grow up thinking I was difficult. You let Celeste take credit for things I did. And when someone tried to erase me from my own son's life, you helped.""
Russell's eyes filled.
"I never wanted Quentin to lose you.""
"But you were willing to let him believe I had abandoned him.""
He had no answer.
Quentin walked toward the window.
Outside, the parking lot lights illuminated rows of expensive cars.
He could hear distant laughter from the ballroom.
Somewhere beyond the door, the DJ was playing another song.
His wedding.
The happiest day of his life had become a place where he was learning how many people had lied to him.
He turned around.
"Harold, what happens now?""
"We preserve the evidence, notify the bank, and have the trust independently reviewed. Any suspicious transaction will be challenged.""
"Has anyone accessed the money?""
Harold hesitated.
"That's what I was about to tell you.""
He opened a separate statement.
A transfer request had been submitted six days earlier.
The amount was $175,000.
The proposed recipient was a private investment company.
Quentin read the name.
*C. Russell Holdings.*
He looked at Celeste.
"What's this?""
Celeste said nothing.
Harold explained.
"The request was flagged because the account details didn't match the original trust instructions. No funds were released.""
Quentin looked at Russell.
"Did you authorize this?""
Russell stared at the paper.
Then he shook his head.
"No.""
Celeste suddenly grabbed her purse.
"That's enough.""
Quentin stepped aside, allowing her to pass.
But as she reached the door, Harold spoke.
"Mrs. Russell, there's one more issue.""
She stopped.
"The transfer request was submitted using an electronic authorization.""
He turned the document toward her.
"The authorization was made from a device registered in your name.""
May you like
Celeste slowly turned around.
And this time, even Russell looked at her as though he no longer recognized the woman standing in front of him.
