Chapter 1 - The Man Who Wasn't Supposed to Be There

The blue velvet box struck the marble floor with a sharp crack.
An elderly man staggered backward as Vanessa Reed shoved both hands against his chest.
"I told you not to come here!"
Her voice carried across the wedding chapel, cutting through the soft music that had been playing beneath the enormous crystal chandeliers.
Thomas Carter, sixty-nine years old, caught the edge of a nearby chair. His knees buckled, and he dropped heavily into the seat.
His worn brown coat twisted beneath him.
Around them, guests turned in disbelief.
Some stood. Others froze with champagne glasses halfway to their lips.
Vanessa wasn't finished.
She stepped closer, pointing directly at his face.
"Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is? I specifically told you to stay away! Were you planning to humiliate my family in front of everyone?"
Thomas looked at the small velvet box lying near his shoes.
"I didn't come to cause trouble," he said, his voice unsteady. "I only wanted to give her something."
"Nobody here wants anything from a man like you!"
At the altar, Camille Reed stood motionless in her white wedding gown.
Twenty-nine years old, beautiful, and surrounded by hundreds of white roses, she had imagined this moment her entire life.
Her mother's angry voice shattered it.
Beside her, Jordan Carter's expression changed.
The thirty-one-year-old groom stepped away from the altar.
"Jordan," Camille whispered.
But he was already moving.
He walked quickly down the center aisle, passing guests who were beginning to rise from their seats.
When he reached Thomas, he bent beside the chair.
"Dad. Are you hurt?"
Thomas attempted a weak smile.
"I'm alright, son."
Jordan helped him stand.
Only after his father was steady did Jordan turn toward Vanessa.
"You just shoved an elderly man into a chair. In the middle of our wedding. Do you understand what you just did?"
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I removed someone who had no business being here."
Jordan stared at her.
"That man is my father."
"And being your father doesn't give him permission to embarrass my daughter!"
A murmur traveled through the room.
Jordan stepped between Vanessa and Thomas.
"You can look down on his clothes. You can make fun of his old coat. But you do not get to humiliate him in front of me."
"Then perhaps you should have taught him to respect boundaries."
Thomas raised a trembling hand.
"Jordan, please. This isn't worth ruining your day."
But Jordan remained beside him.
Camille hurried down from the altar and stopped at Jordan's right side.
She gripped his arm.
"Jordan, please listen to me. Everyone is watching."
He turned toward her.
There was disappointment in his eyes that she had never seen before.
"Then tell me something, Camille. Am I supposed to pretend I didn't see your mother shove my father?"
"That's not what I meant."
"Then what did you mean?"
Camille opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because she had seen what happened.
And she knew Jordan had every reason to be furious.
From the back of the chapel came the sound of hurried footsteps.
"Wait! Everybody, please stop!"
Naomi Carter, Jordan's younger sister, rushed down the aisle in a simple black dress.
She had tears streaming down her cheeks.
She stopped beside her father and looked at the blue velvet box on the marble floor.
"Oh, Daddy."
She knelt and picked it up.
Then she looked directly at Vanessa.
"You've got everything wrong about him. Please, just let him speak."
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Naomi, this is a private family matter."
"He is family!"
Naomi placed the box back in Thomas's hands.
Thomas held it carefully.
For a moment, his tired eyes moved from Jordan to Camille.
Then he opened the lid.
Inside the dark blue velvet rested a small, oval-shaped gold badge.
Its polished surface caught the chandelier light.
Thomas raised it to chest level.
"Vanessa," he said quietly, "you told me I had no right to stand here."
His voice broke.
"But do you recognize this?"
Vanessa looked down.
Her arms slowly fell to her sides.
Her eyes widened.
All the anger disappeared from her face.
For the first time that afternoon, she looked genuinely frightened.
Camille stared at her mother.
She had seen Vanessa angry, proud, demanding, and disappointed.
But never like this.
May you like
And when Thomas turned the badge slightly in his trembling hands, Camille noticed something engraved on its back.
Her own name.
