Chapter 10: The Truth That Finally Set Them Free

The first thing Damian noticed was that Ava had stopped asking whether he was her real father.

For months, the question had haunted their home.

Sometimes she asked while brushing her teeth. Sometimes she whispered it at bedtime. Once, she had even asked Olivia whether babies could have two fathers who looked exactly alike.

Damian always gave her the same answer.

He was her father.

Nothing could change that.

But he knew the truth deserved more than comforting words.

It deserved to be understood.

Six months after Marcus Brooks was arrested, the family gathered at Denise's house for a Sunday dinner. It was the first time Damian, Daniel, Olivia, and the girls had all sat around the same table without police officers, lawyers, or security personnel nearby.

Denise had prepared fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and sweet potato pie.

The girls were in the backyard, arguing over whose turn it was to use the pink bicycle.

Daniel stood at the kitchen counter, pouring drinks.

“You still make terrible lemonade,” Damian told him.

Daniel glanced over.

“Funny. I was about to say the same thing about your cooking.””

“I'm not the one who burned the chicken last week.””

“That was one time.””

“Three times.””

Olivia laughed.

For a moment, the house felt ordinary.

Then Denise placed a folder on the table.

“I think it's time you both saw this.””

Damian looked at her.

“What is it?””

“The complete medical investigation.””

Daniel put down his glass.

“I thought the investigators had everything.””

“They do. But there's one document I kept from the original records.””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a handwritten statement dated August 1990.

Damian recognized the signature immediately.

Marcus Brooks.

But beneath it was another signature.

Denise Brooks.

And a third.

A name none of them expected.

*Dr. Evelyn Carter.*

Olivia leaned forward.

“What does it say?””

Denise took a breath.

“Marcus didn't just separate the twins because he wanted control of the family business.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then why?””

Denise looked at her sons.

“He believed one of you would eventually expose him.””

Damian studied the document.

It described a private agreement involving medical records, custody arrangements, and a financial trust established before the twins were born.

At the bottom was a sentence that made Daniel sit down.

In the event of disclosure, the second son will assume responsibility for the original research.

Daniel looked at Denise.

“What does that mean?””

She closed her eyes.

“Marcus always intended to make one of you responsible for his crimes.””

Damian slowly lowered the paper.

“So he wanted to sacrifice one son to protect the other?””

“Yes.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He was going to destroy one of us either way.””

Denise nodded.

“I know.””

Damian stared at his mother.

“Why didn't you tell us this before?””

“Because I was ashamed. I spent thirty-six years telling myself that keeping quiet was the same as protecting you.””

She looked toward Daniel.

“But it wasn't.””

Daniel remained silent.

Denise reached across the table.

“I can't ask you to forgive me.””

He looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“I don't know if I can.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

“But I don't want my daughter growing up thinking family means pretending nothing happened.””

Denise began crying.

Daniel finally placed his hand over hers.

“Maybe we can start with the truth.””

It wasn't forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.

Three weeks later, Damian received a call from Detective Harris.

“Brooks, we found something.””

Damian was in his office when the detective called. He immediately closed his laptop.

“What happened?””

“Your father's lawyers have been trying to access a private trust account.””

Damian frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?””

“Everything. The account lists you and Daniel as beneficiaries.””

Damian leaned back.

“Marcus has been arrested. How can he still control anything?””

“Because the trust was established before either of you was born.””

Harris paused.

“And there's another beneficiary.””

“Who?””

“Ava Brooks.””

Damian went completely still.

“What?””

“Your daughter.””

“Why would she be listed?””

“We don't know yet. But the trust contains a substantial amount of money and several properties. Your father apparently intended for the assets to pass to the next generation.””

Damian rubbed his forehead.

“I don't want his money.””

“That's understandable. But there's something else you should know.””

“What?””

“The trust contains the original research agreements. If we can establish that Marcus used the money to fund illegal activities, those documents could become important evidence.””

Damian looked toward the photograph on his desk.

Ava was smiling beside Olivia.

“Send me the paperwork.””

That evening, Damian told Olivia.

She listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she asked one question.

“Can he use Ava's name to get near her again?””

“No. The trust is frozen, and Detective Harris is handling the investigation.””

Olivia looked toward the hallway.

“Then I want her name removed.””

Damian nodded.

“That's what I was thinking.””

The next morning, they met with an attorney.

Her name was Michelle Grant, a Black woman in her early forties who specialized in estate litigation and financial misconduct.

She reviewed the documents carefully.

“Your father established this trust before the twins were born,” she explained.

“He included provisions for future descendants. But the question is whether the trust was funded through legitimate assets.””

Damian leaned forward.

“Can it be dissolved?””

“Possibly. But I need to investigate the source of the money.””

Olivia spoke firmly.

“We don't want our daughters connected to him.””

Michelle nodded.

“Then we'll make that the priority.””

Daniel, sitting beside Damian, opened a folder.

“There's something else.””

He handed Michelle a photograph.

It showed Marcus standing with a man outside a private medical laboratory.

Michelle examined it.

“Who is this?””

Daniel looked at Damian.

“Dr. Thomas Reed.””

Damian frowned.

“Should I know that name?””

“He was the physician who signed the original fertility authorization.””

Michelle looked closer.

“Wasn't he reported dead?””

Daniel nodded.

“That's what Marcus told everyone.””

Damian leaned forward.

“Then where is he?””

Daniel took out another photograph.

This one showed Dr. Reed entering a federal building two weeks earlier.

Michelle slowly set the pictures down.

“If this man is alive, he may be able to explain how the original records were falsified.””

Damian looked at his brother.

“Do you know where to find him?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Then his phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Stop looking for Dr. Reed. He knows what happened to Olivia.

Daniel showed the screen to Damian.

Olivia's expression changed.

“Why would someone say he knows what happened to me?””

Damian took the phone.

He read the message again.

Then another message arrived.

Ask him who signed the transfer order.

The following morning, Detective Harris arranged a meeting with Dr. Reed.

The man was seventy-one, with silver hair and a neatly trimmed beard. He arrived at the police station accompanied by an attorney.

He looked tired.

Damian recognized him immediately from the photograph.

“You were there when my daughters were born.””

Dr. Reed nodded.

“I was.””

“You signed the medical documents.””

“Yes.””

“Did you know Marcus was falsifying the records?””

The doctor looked down.

“I discovered it afterward.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Then why didn't you report him?””

“Because I was involved.””

Damian's jaw tightened.

“What did you do?””

Dr. Reed took a breath.

“I signed the transfer order that moved Olivia from the hospital to the private research facility.””

Olivia's fingers tightened around Damian's hand.

“Why?””

“Marcus told me she needed emergency treatment. He showed me medical reports suggesting she was unstable.””

“That was a lie,” Olivia said.

“I know that now.””

Damian leaned forward.

“Who authorized the transfer?””

Dr. Reed looked at him.

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stood.

“No.””

The doctor continued.

“Denise signed the authorization because Marcus threatened to have the girls taken into state custody.””

Damian looked at Olivia.

She was shaking.

“Did my mother know where I was?”” she asked.

Dr. Reed nodded.

“Yes.””

Olivia closed her eyes.

“And did she know I was alive?””

“Yes.””

Damian stood.

“Why did she let us believe Olivia was missing?””

Dr. Reed looked toward the detective.

“Because Marcus threatened to kill her if she helped Olivia escape.””

Olivia slowly stood.

“I want to ask you something.””

The doctor nodded.

“Go ahead.””

“Did you ever see Marcus hurt the girls?””

Dr. Reed hesitated.

Then he answered.

“No. He never physically harmed them.””

Olivia's shoulders lowered slightly.

“But,” the doctor continued, “he had plans to move them to a private facility where they would be monitored indefinitely.””

Damian clenched his fists.

“Why?””

“Because he believed their genetic profiles could help him develop a treatment for his condition.””

Daniel stared.

“So this was about saving himself?””

“Yes.””

The doctor opened a folder.

“Marcus believed his neurological condition could be reversed through a series of experimental treatments. He wanted to use genetic information from his sons and their children.””

Olivia looked disgusted.

“He wanted to turn our daughters into medicine.””

Dr. Reed nodded.

“And when I realized what he intended, I helped Olivia escape.””

Damian stared.

“You helped her?””

“I did.””

“Then why didn't she come home?””

The doctor looked at Olivia.

“Because she received a threat.””

Olivia nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

“What threat?”” Damian asked.

Dr. Reed placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Damian and Ava outside their home.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

If you return, the child will disappear.

Damian felt his chest tighten.

Olivia looked at him.

“I thought Marcus would hurt Ava if I came home. I believed disappearing was the only way to protect her.””

Damian reached for her hand.

“You should never have had to make that choice.””

She began crying.

“I know.””

For the first time, the entire truth was finally coming together.

But Detective Harris still had one question.

He looked at Dr. Reed.

“Who sent the threat?””

The doctor hesitated.

Then he pointed to the photograph.

“The signature at the bottom.””

Damian turned it over.

A name had been written in black ink.

Not Marcus.

Not Denise.

Not Daniel.

It was the name of the woman who had first helped Olivia disappear.

*NORA BENNETT.*

Damian looked up.

“Why would Nora threaten Olivia?””

Dr. Reed shook his head.

“She didn't.””

“Then who did?””

The doctor looked toward the observation window.

A woman stood behind the glass.

Nora.

She was holding a thick envelope.

And she had been waiting for them.

Nora entered the interview room.

Her face was pale.

Damian stood immediately.

“You knew about the threat?””

Nora nodded.

“I wrote the message.””

Olivia stared.

“Why?””

Nora placed the envelope on the table.

“Because Marcus had someone watching your house. I needed him to believe you were still under control.””

Damian frowned.

“You made Olivia think her daughter was in danger?””

“I made Marcus believe I was helping him.””

Nora opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs, bank statements, and a series of recorded conversations.

“I spent seven years gathering evidence against Marcus. I was the person who leaked the first medical records to the investigators.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why didn't you tell us?””

“Because I didn't know who I could trust.””

She turned toward Olivia.

“I knew Marcus had people inside the hospital. I knew Denise was being threatened. And I knew if I revealed what I was doing, he would move the girls.””

Olivia looked at her for a long moment.

“You saved my daughters.””

Nora shook her head.

“We saved each other.””

She pushed the envelope toward Detective Harris.

“Everything you need is in there.””

Harris opened it.

His expression changed as he examined the first page.

“Where did you get this?””

Nora looked toward the window.

“From Marcus's private financial office.””

Damian stared.

“You went inside his office?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two days before his arrest.””

She pulled out one final photograph.

It showed Marcus sitting at a desk, signing a document.

Beside him stood another man.

Dr. Reed.

But behind them was a third figure.

A young woman holding a baby.

Olivia took the photograph.

Her face went white.

“That's impossible.””

Damian looked at her.

“What?””

Olivia pointed toward the baby.

Then toward the woman.

“That's me.””

Everyone went silent.

The photograph was dated seven years earlier.

The year Ruby and Ava were born.

But the woman holding the baby wasn't holding Ruby.

She was holding a third child.

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note:

Subject 006 — Delivery completed. Biological parentage withheld.

Damian stared at the image.

“Who is that baby?””

Nora slowly closed her eyes.

Then she whispered:

“That's the child Marcus never told you about.””

The room fell silent.

Because even after the arrest, even after the truth about the twins, even after finding Olivia and bringing the girls home, one final secret remained.

Marcus Brooks had never been working with just two children.

May you like

There had been a third.

And somewhere in the world, another child was still waiting to discover who their family really was.
