Chapter 10: Two Fathers, One Family
The first sound Damian heard was Ava screaming his name.
“Daddy!””
He slammed both hands against the steel door.
“AVA!””
Daniel grabbed the emergency handle.
It wouldn't move.
Olivia rushed toward the control panel.
“Marcus has locked the entire floor!””
Damian turned.
“Open it!””
“I'm trying!””
Denise stood near the console, staring at the screen.
The transmission had stopped at eighty-seven percent.
“There's another way,” she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
Denise pointed toward a small maintenance hatch beneath the desk.
“The original security controls are in the basement.””
Damian stepped forward.
“Then take me there.””
Denise shook her head.
“Marcus will be waiting.””
“I don't care.””
She grabbed his arm.
“Listen to me. Your father has spent thirty-six years believing that love makes people weak. That's why he kept separating families. He thought he could control everyone by making them afraid of losing someone.””
Damian looked at the door.
“My daughter is on the other side.””
Denise nodded.
“Then don't let him turn you into him.””
Daniel crouched and opened the maintenance hatch.
A narrow ladder descended into darkness.
“I'll go,” he said.
Damian shook his head.
“We go together.””
Daniel looked at Ruby's empty bed.
Then at the door.
“Together.””
The basement was cold and smelled of electrical equipment.
Emergency lights illuminated a corridor filled with server racks.
Daniel followed Denise toward a control room.
Olivia stayed behind with Detective Harris, who had finally reached the fourth floor with his officers.
Damian stopped at the entrance.
“What do we need?””
Denise pointed toward a central terminal.
“The master control.””
Daniel approached it.
A security camera displayed Marcus walking through another corridor.
He was holding Ava's hand.
A second camera showed Ruby beside him.
Damian's chest tightened.
“Where is he taking them?””
Denise studied the screen.
“Transfer room.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What happens there?””
“Marcus intends to move the girls to a private aircraft.””
Damian stared at the screen.
“How long?””
“Twenty minutes.””
Daniel turned toward the terminal.
“Open the doors.””
Denise entered a code.
A warning appeared.
*MASTER AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.*
She tried another code.
Access denied.
Damian looked at her.
“What's the password?””
Denise hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Olivia's birthday.””
Daniel entered it.
The screen flashed green.
*ACCESS GRANTED.*
A map of the building appeared.
Every locked door was marked in red.
Daniel selected the transfer corridor.
A second warning appeared.
*SECURITY OVERRIDE WILL ALERT ADMINISTRATOR.*
Damian didn't hesitate.
“Do it.””
Daniel pressed the button.
The lights throughout the facility flickered.
Then a message appeared.
*ALL INTERNAL SECURITY DOORS UNLOCKED.*
Damian started running.
Marcus was waiting near the transfer room.
Ava stood beside him.
Ruby was crying.
Two guards stood behind them.
Marcus looked almost amused when he saw Damian approaching.
“You really should have stayed home.””
Damian slowed.
“Let the girls go.””
Marcus looked at Ava.
“Your father is very emotional.””
Ava moved closer to him.
“That's not my father.””
Marcus's expression changed.
“Excuse me?””
Ava looked directly at him.
“My daddy doesn't make little girls cry.””
For the first time, Marcus appeared genuinely offended.
Daniel stepped into the corridor.
“Let them go, Marcus.””
Marcus laughed.
“Both my sons. Together at last.””
“You're not our father,” Daniel said.
Marcus's face hardened.
“I gave you life.””
“You stole mine.””
Marcus looked at Damian.
“And you. I gave you everything.””
Damian shook his head.
“You gave me lies.””
Marcus raised the remote.
The guards moved forward.
But before they could reach the brothers, Detective Harris and several officers appeared from the opposite corridor.
“Police! Drop your weapons!””
The guards froze.
Marcus stepped backward.
“This is private property.””
Harris raised his weapon.
“Not anymore.””
Marcus looked toward the security doors.
Then toward the brothers.
“You have no idea what you've destroyed.””
Denise appeared behind the officers.
“Yes, Marcus,” she said.
“We do.””
He turned.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Denise held up a small device.
“The transmission restarted.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“Eighty-seven percent was enough. The files were already copied. The remaining records were sent through the backup system.””
Harris stepped forward.
“We have your research files, financial records, false medical authorizations, and the original birth documents.””
Marcus looked toward the ceiling camera.
Then back at his sons.
“You think this is over?””
Damian stepped forward.
“No. But you're finished.””
Marcus was arrested that night.
He continued insisting that the program had been misunderstood.
He claimed he had acted in the interest of science.
But the documents told another story.
They revealed falsified medical records, illegal experimentation, coercion, identity fraud, and years of surveillance involving families who had never consented.
The private research center was shut down.
Its records were transferred to federal investigators.
And the man who had spent decades controlling his family finally lost control of everything.
Three days later, Damian sat beside Olivia in a hospital room.
She was recovering from dehydration and exhaustion.
Ava sat on one side of her mother, while Ruby sat on the other.
The two girls were sharing a coloring book.
Daniel stood near the window.
He had barely left Ruby's side since the arrest.
Every time she called him Daddy, his eyes became wet.
Damian watched them.
“She's comfortable with you.””
Daniel smiled faintly.
“She deserves to be.””
Olivia reached for Damian's hand.
“Are you angry with me?””
He looked at her.
“For what?””
“For keeping everything from you.””
Damian took a breath.
“I wish you'd trusted me.””
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
She looked toward Ava.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
Damian gently squeezed her hand.
“You don't have to protect everyone alone anymore.””
Olivia's eyes filled.
“I missed you.””
“I missed you, too.””
He leaned forward and kissed her forehead.
Then Ava climbed onto the bed.
“Mommy?””
Olivia smiled.
“Yes, baby?””
“Are you coming home?””
Olivia looked at Damian.
Then she smiled again.
“Yes, sweetheart. I'm coming home.””
Ava hugged her.
Ruby watched them quietly.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Are we going home, too?””
Daniel knelt beside her.
“If you'll let me.””
Ruby considered his answer.
Then she wrapped her arms around his neck.
“I want you to come.””
Daniel held her tightly.
For the first time in thirty-six years, he felt like he belonged somewhere.
Six months later, the four of them gathered at a small family barbecue in Denise's backyard.
The afternoon was warm.
Music played from a speaker on the patio.
Ava and Ruby chased each other around the garden, laughing.
Their matching silver bird necklaces caught the sunlight.
Denise stood beside the grill, watching the girls.
She had pleaded guilty to her role in the falsified records and agreed to cooperate fully with investigators. She had also begun rebuilding her relationship with Daniel, although he still struggled to trust her.
He had told her he wasn't ready to call her Mom.
She had accepted that.
Healing, she was learning, couldn't be demanded.
Damian stood beside Olivia, holding two glasses of lemonade.
“Do you ever think about what would have happened if Ava hadn't recognized Daniel that day?”” he asked.
Olivia looked toward the girls.
“Every day.””
Daniel approached them.
“Speaking of that day, there's something I still haven't told you.””
Damian raised an eyebrow.
“What?””
Daniel smiled.
“Marcus wasn't the first person who approached Ava.””
Damian frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“Before I went to her school, someone else visited her.””
Olivia turned.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward Denise.
She had gone pale.
“Your father hired someone to watch the girls. But that person eventually turned against him.””
Damian stepped closer.
“Who?””
Daniel pulled out a photograph.
It showed a young Black woman standing outside Ava's school.
Damian recognized her immediately.
Nora.
He looked at Daniel.
“Why would Nora work for Marcus?””
Daniel shook his head.
“She didn't. She was the one who first warned Olivia that Marcus was planning to take the girls.””
Olivia's eyes widened.
“Nora knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“She had been investigating the medical center for years. She found the original birth records and helped Olivia escape.””
Damian looked toward the garden.
“Then why did she never tell us?””
“Because Marcus had threatened her family.””
Olivia exhaled slowly.
“She saved Ruby.””
Daniel smiled.
“She saved all of us.””
Across the garden, Ruby called out.
“Daddy! Look!””
Daniel turned.
Ruby was standing beside Ava, holding a small silver bird pendant.
She had found it in the garden.
Ava pointed toward the necklace.
“It's like ours!””
Daniel walked over.
He picked it up.
On the back was a tiny inscription.
Not Olivia's initials.
Not the girls' names.
Just three words.
*FAMILY IS CHOSEN.*
Daniel looked toward Damian.
His brother smiled.
And for the first time, neither man felt threatened by seeing his own face in someone else's.
They had spent their entire lives being told they were two versions of the same person.
But they weren't.
One had grown up with a mother who loved him.
The other had grown up believing he had been abandoned.
One had become a father before knowing he had a brother.
The other had discovered fatherhood after believing his daughter was lost forever.
They shared a face.
But they had chosen different lives.
And now they had something neither their father nor his money could ever take away.
A family.
That evening, as the sun disappeared behind the rooftops, Ava climbed onto Damian's lap.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, baby?””
She looked across the yard at Daniel, who was helping Ruby fly a pink kite.
“Is Uncle Daniel going to stay?””
Damian smiled.
“If he wants to.””
Ava thought about it.
Then she leaned closer and whispered:
“Good. Because now Ruby has a daddy, too.””
Damian kissed the top of her head.
“That's right.””
Ava looked up at him.
“And you know what?””
“What?””
She smiled.
“I think two Daddys are better than one.””
Damian laughed.
Across the garden, Daniel heard her.
He looked at his brother.
For a moment, the two men smiled exactly alike.
But this time, nobody was frightened.
Because the truth had finally separated the faces from the lies.
And the girls had something their grandfather had never understood.
They didn't need a perfect family.
May you like
They needed people who would never stop coming home.
*THE END*
