Chapter 3: The Camera Was Never the Only Witness
Daniel stared at Victoria.
“What did you just say?””
Victoria looked from him to Evelyn, then at Rose.
“I said the photograph belongs to the Whitmore family.””
Rose held it closer to her chest.
“It has my mother in it.””
“And it contains information you don't understand.””
“Then explain it.””
Victoria gave a cold laugh.
“You've been employed here for six months. You think that gives you the right to question my family?””
Rose stepped forward.
“I think saving someone's life gives me the right to ask why you tried to kill her.””
Victoria's expression hardened.
“Be careful.””
Daniel moved between them.
“Victoria, answer the question.””
She looked at him as though he had betrayed her.
“You're seriously taking their side?””
“I'm asking what you know about Thomas Carter.””
Victoria looked away.
“I don't know anyone by that name.””
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“You're a terrible liar.””
“Your memory is clearly affected by the fall.””
“My memory is the only reason you're standing here wearing that ring!””
Daniel glanced at his mother's hand.
“Mom, what does that mean?””
Evelyn walked toward the table.
“Thomas Carter was an accountant. He worked for your grandfather and later for your father. He discovered that money was being transferred out of the company through accounts controlled by people inside this family.””
“Who?”” Daniel asked.
Evelyn looked directly at Victoria.
“Your grandmother's brother. And later, your father's closest business partner.””
Victoria shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.””
“Grace found the original records,” Evelyn continued.
“She brought them to me. She wanted to expose everything.””
Rose's voice cracked.
“Then why didn't you help her?””
Evelyn looked devastated.
“I tried.””
“What happened?””
“The night before she was supposed to meet me, her house caught fire.””
Rose gripped the edge of the table.
“And you thought she died?””
“I was told she did.””
“By whom?””
Evelyn looked toward the door.
Before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang.
He checked the screen.
It was the head of security.
“Mr. Whitmore,” the guard said urgently, “the camera technician has arrived.””
Daniel straightened.
“Good. Can he access the recording?””
“Yes, sir. There's something you need to know first.””
“What?””
“The camera isn't connected to the main system, but it has local storage.””
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“Then retrieve it.””
“We're trying. The technician says someone attempted to remove the storage unit.””
Everyone turned.
Victoria's face lost its color.
Daniel lowered his phone.
“Who touched the camera?””
“No one,” Victoria said quickly.
The security guard's voice came through the speaker.
“Sir, the technician found fresh tool marks on the housing.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Lock down the terrace. Nobody leaves.””
Victoria stepped backward.
“Daniel, you're treating me like a criminal.””
“Then stop behaving like one.””
The technician arrived ten minutes later carrying a small equipment case.
His name was Marcus Bell.
He placed a laptop on the lounge table and connected a tiny storage device.
“Mr. Whitmore, the camera was installed yesterday afternoon. It records continuously to an internal drive.””
Daniel folded his arms.
“Can you recover the footage?””
Marcus nodded.
“Unless the drive was physically destroyed, yes.””
Victoria stood beside the window.
“I think we're wasting time.””
Marcus didn't look up.
“Ma'am, I'd appreciate it if you didn't touch the equipment.””
Victoria withdrew her hand from the table.
Rose watched her carefully.
The technician worked for several minutes.
Then a progress bar appeared.
“Found the recording,” he said.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Play it.””
Marcus opened the file.
The screen showed the rooftop terrace.
Guests moved around the tables. Waiters carried drinks. A photographer adjusted his camera.
Then Victoria entered the frame.
She walked directly toward Evelyn.
Marcus paused the recording.
“Do you want the full sequence?””
“Yes,” Daniel answered.
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
“Wait.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Perhaps we should consider your mother's condition before showing everyone something that could upset her.””
Evelyn laughed.
“You're worried about upsetting me?””
“I'm worried about you.””
“No. You're worried about what's on that screen.””
Marcus pressed play.
The image moved forward.
Victoria approached Evelyn near the railing.
She leaned toward the older woman.
Even without sound, the movement was unmistakable.
Evelyn stepped back.
Victoria placed both hands against her shoulders.
Then she shoved.
Evelyn's body tipped over the railing.
Rose rushed into frame.
The entire lounge fell silent.
The recording continued as Rose caught Evelyn's arms and struggled to pull her back.
Daniel stared at the screen.
His bride had pushed his mother.
There was no ambiguity.
No misunderstanding.
No possible explanation involving a stumble.
He turned toward Victoria.
“Tell me that isn't you.””
Victoria's lips trembled.
“I can explain.””
“Explain what?””
“She attacked me first!””
Evelyn slammed her palm against the table.
“You pushed me!””
“I was trying to stop you from falling!””
“You pushed me before I even moved!””
Marcus paused the recording.
Daniel looked at the technician.
“Save every copy. Send one to the police.””
“Yes, sir.””
Victoria's expression changed.
“You can't do that.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Watch me.””
She turned toward Rose.
“You have no idea what you've done.””
Rose didn't move.
“I saved her life.””
“You should have stayed out of this family.””
“Why? Because my mother knew your secret?””
Victoria went silent.
That silence was louder than any confession.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Tell her what happened to Grace.””
Victoria shook her head.
“I don't know where she is.””
Rose's heart pounded.
“You just admitted you know she's alive.””
“I said nothing of the sort.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Victoria looked at Daniel.
“Your mother is manipulating you. She has spent years trying to destroy me.””
Daniel removed his wedding ring.
He placed it on the table.
“I'm done.””
Victoria stared at the ring.
“Daniel?””
“Don't contact me.””
“You can't end our marriage over one misunderstanding!””
He pointed at the screen.
“That wasn't a misunderstanding.””
Victoria's eyes filled with tears, but this time nobody moved to comfort her.
She grabbed her handbag.
A security guard stepped in front of the door.
“Ma'am, please wait for the police.””
Victoria glared at him.
“Move.””
“I'm sorry. Mr. Whitmore's instructions.””
She looked around the room.
Then her eyes settled on Rose.
“You think you've won?””
Rose held the photograph tightly.
“I just want my mother.””
Victoria leaned closer.
“Then ask Evelyn what she did the night Grace disappeared.””
Evelyn froze.
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“Mom?””
Victoria smiled faintly.
“Go ahead. Ask her.””
Rose slowly turned.
“What is she talking about?””
Evelyn's face had become completely white.
For the first time that evening, the woman who had survived the fall seemed genuinely terrified.
“Evelyn?”” Daniel asked.
She lowered herself onto the sofa.
Then she whispered:
“Because I was the last person to see Grace before the fire.””
Rose's knees weakened.
“You told me you thought she died.””
“I did.””
“But you never told me you were there.””
Evelyn looked up.
“I didn't just see her that night, Rose.””
She reached for the photograph and turned it over.
On the back, beneath a faded handwritten date, was a sentence in blue ink.
If anything happens to me, protect my daughter. She is the only one who can prove the truth.
Rose recognized the handwriting immediately.
It belonged to her mother.
Evelyn's voice broke.
“Grace left something with me that night.””
Rose leaned closer.
“What?””
Evelyn stared toward the closed lounge door.
“A key.””
Daniel frowned.
“A key to what?””
Evelyn looked at Rose.
“The place where your mother has been hiding.””
May you like
And then she revealed the one detail that made Rose's blood run cold.
“It's been inside your father's grave for nineteen years.””
