Chapter 6: What Darius Had Hidden

Malcolm didn't answer Simone immediately.

He read her message three times, searching for some indication that she might have misunderstood what she had discovered.

Darius had a complicated history with women. He could be careless with relationships, quick to make promises, and slow to recognize the damage left behind when he broke them.

But Malcolm had never imagined that his friend would deliberately exploit his illness.

The thought made his stomach turn.

Renee sat beside him, watching his expression.

"Do you know her?""

"She's Darius's younger sister. I've met her a dozen times.""

"Do you trust her?""

Malcolm considered the question.

"I don't know.""

"Then don't give her anything she hasn't earned. Let her tell you what she knows.""

He nodded and opened the message field.

What happened before last night?

Simone replied almost immediately.

Can I call you? I don't want to put everything in a text.

Malcolm looked at Renee.

She shrugged.

"Your decision.""

He typed:

You can call. I'm not promising anything beyond listening.

The phone rang less than a minute later.

"Hello?"" Malcolm said.

"Malcolm?""

Simone's voice was thin and uncertain.

"Yes.""

"Oh, thank God. I wasn't sure you'd answer.""

"Tell me what you know.""

She took a shaky breath.

"I need you to understand that I didn't know about everything at first. I only found out recently.""

"Found out about what?""

"About Darius and Tiana.""

Malcolm tightened his grip on the phone.

"What exactly did you find out?""

There was a pause.

"How long have you known?""

"Since last night.""

"Oh.""

Her silence frightened him more than a direct accusation would have.

"Simone, I need you to stop circling around this.""

"I'm sorry.""

"Then tell me.""

She exhaled.

"I saw messages between them a few weeks ago. I was at Darius's apartment, looking for a receipt he said he had left on the kitchen counter. His phone lit up while I was standing there.""

Malcolm said nothing.

"The message was from Tiana. I recognized her name immediately. I didn't open anything at first, but then another message appeared.""

"What did it say?""

Simone hesitated.

"It said she couldn't keep doing this behind your back.""

Malcolm felt the words strike him.

He looked toward the window, but the bright morning offered no relief.

"How long ago?""

"Three weeks. Maybe a month. I'm not completely sure.""

He swallowed.

"What happened after that?""

"I confronted him. He told me I was reading too much into it. He said Tiana was scared and that he was helping her deal with everything going on in your relationship.""

Malcolm closed his eyes.

The explanation sounded painfully familiar.

"What did you say?""

"I told him that helping somebody didn't mean sneaking around with his best friend's girlfriend.""

"And what did he say?""

Simone's voice dropped.

"He said you wouldn't understand.""

Malcolm opened his eyes.

"Wouldn't understand what?""

"He said you were so focused on your health that you couldn't see what was happening to her. He said she needed somebody who could be there for her emotionally.""

The room seemed to go quiet around Malcolm.

He could hear Renee shifting in her chair, but the sound felt distant.

"He said that about me?""

"Yes.""

Malcolm stared at the phone.

He had known Darius could be selfish. He had known his friend could justify poor decisions when he wanted something badly enough.

But this was different.

Darius had taken Malcolm's most private fear and turned it into an argument for why he deserved to lose the woman he loved.

"What else did he say?"" Malcolm asked.

Simone began crying.

"I'm sorry. I should have told you sooner.""

"Please. Just tell me.""

"He said that you were probably going to lose the relationship anyway. He said Tiana was young, she had a life of her own, and you couldn't expect her to spend every day waiting for things to get better.""

Malcolm felt his jaw tighten.

"Did he say that before or after they started kissing?""

"I don't know exactly when it started.""

"Did you ask him?""

"Yes. He wouldn't answer.""

Malcolm looked down at his hands.

He wanted to believe that Darius had made one terrible decision in a moment of weakness. He wanted to believe that Tiana's loneliness had turned into confusion, that the kiss had happened before either of them fully understood what they were doing.

But Simone was describing conversations that had taken place weeks earlier.

Conversations in which Darius had already decided that Malcolm's illness made him less entitled to his own relationship.

"Did you tell him to stop?"" Malcolm asked.

"Yes.""

"And?""

"He told me to stay out of his business.""

A bitter laugh escaped Malcolm.

"Of course he did.""

"Malcolm, I swear I wanted to call you. I just didn't know how. You were already going through so much, and I didn't want to make things worse if I was wrong.""

He closed his eyes.

There was the same instinct again.

The instinct to protect him from the truth because the truth might hurt.

He understood the intention. He could even appreciate it.

But he was beginning to see how easily that intention became another kind of isolation.

Everyone around him had been deciding what he could handle without asking him.

Darius had decided he couldn't understand.

Tiana had decided he couldn't bear her loneliness.

Simone had decided he couldn't handle another painful revelation.

And Malcolm had spent months believing that being loved meant trusting everyone else to know what was best for him.

"Thank you for telling me now," he said.

Simone sniffled.

"Are you angry with me?""

"I'm hurt.""

"I understand.""

"No," Malcolm said, gently but firmly.

"You don't. Not completely. But you can start by telling me the truth when you know it, even if you think I'm going to be upset.""

She went quiet.

Then she said, "You're right.""

Malcolm rubbed his forehead.

"Do you still have the messages?""

"Some of them. I took screenshots after I confronted him because I was afraid he'd delete everything.""

His pulse quickened.

"Can you send them to me?""

"Yes.""

"Please don't edit anything or leave out the parts that make him look better. I want to see the whole conversation.""

"I will.""

The call ended.

Malcolm sat motionless for several seconds, trying to absorb what he had heard.

Renee reached for his hand.

"How bad is it?""

He looked at her.

"Darius knew.""

"Knew what?""

"That he was crossing a line. He knew what it meant. He knew how much I trusted him, and he used my illness to convince himself that what he was doing was justified.""

Renee's eyes hardened.

"That sounds like him trying to make his choices your fault.""

Malcolm nodded.

His phone vibrated.

Three screenshots arrived.

He opened the first.

The messages were dated nearly four weeks earlier.

Tiana: I feel terrible every time I leave his room because I don't know what to say anymore.

Darius: You don't have to pretend you're okay with me.

Tiana: I love him. That's what makes everything so confusing.

Darius: You can love somebody and still need something they can't give you.

Malcolm's throat tightened.

He opened the next screenshot.

Tiana: Sometimes I feel like I'm cheating just by wanting a life that isn't about hospitals and appointments.

Darius: Wanting to feel alive doesn't make you a bad person.

He stared at the words.

They weren't explicit declarations of an affair. They were the sort of messages two people could use to reassure themselves that nothing wrong was happening.

But their intimacy was unmistakable.

They were building a private emotional world around the idea that Malcolm's illness made his relationship a burden.

The third screenshot contained a longer exchange.

Darius: You shouldn't have to spend the rest of your life feeling guilty for wanting more.

Tiana: I don't want to abandon him.

Darius: Nobody's asking you to abandon him.

Tiana: Then what are we doing?

Darius: We're being honest about what we need.

Malcolm read the final exchange again.

He placed the phone on his lap.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe comfortably. He reached for the controls on his oxygen equipment, checked the tubing, and took several slow breaths until the room stopped feeling so tight.

Renee remained beside him without speaking.

When he finally looked up, she asked, "Do you want me to call him?""

"No.""

"Do you want to call Tiana?""

"No.""

"What do you want to do?""

Malcolm stared at the screenshots.

"I want to know when they stopped pretending this was about helping each other.""

His phone vibrated again.

This time, Tiana's name appeared.

Please answer me. I know Simone contacted you.

Malcolm's expression changed.

He hadn't told Tiana that Simone had called.

He hadn't told anyone except Renee.

He typed a response.

How do you know she contacted me?

The reply came quickly.

Darius just called me. He's worried about what she'll tell you.

Malcolm read the message.

Then another appeared.

Please don't believe everything you hear from his family. They're angry with him about other things, and I don't want them making this worse.

Malcolm felt a familiar chill settle over him.

Tiana wasn't asking what Simone had said.

She was warning him not to believe it.

He typed:

Did you and Darius start talking about our relationship before you kissed him?

The typing indicator appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Finally, she replied.

We were friends. We talked because we were both struggling.

Malcolm looked at the message.

It wasn't an answer.

He typed again.

Did you tell him you wanted to leave me?

This time, the pause lasted longer.

Then:

I told him I didn't know what to do anymore.

Malcolm closed his eyes.

He could hear her saying it, could imagine the tears in her eyes and the way Darius would have leaned closer, telling her she wasn't wrong to want a different life.

He could imagine how comforting it must have felt to be understood by someone who wasn't sick, someone who didn't need medication reminders or help getting from one room to another.

But he could also imagine the choices that followed.

He opened his eyes and typed:

You could have told me the same thing.

Tiana's response came almost immediately.

I was afraid of hurting you.

Malcolm stared at the words.

Then he wrote:

You hurt me anyway. You just made sure I was the last person to know.

He sent the message and put the phone down.

For several minutes, neither he nor Renee spoke.

Then Malcolm turned toward his sister.

"I keep thinking that if I had been healthier, none of this would have happened.""

Renee's expression became fierce.

"Don't do that to yourself.""

"I'm serious.""

"So am I. Maybe your illness put pressure on the relationship. Maybe Tiana was frightened and lonely. Those things can be true without making you responsible for their choices.""

He looked away.

"What if I really couldn't give her what she needed?""

"Then she could have told you. She could have left. She could have asked for help. What she couldn't do was secretly build a relationship with your best friend and then tell herself you caused it.""

Malcolm absorbed her words.

The pain remained, but something else was beginning to emerge beneath it.

Clarity.

He had spent months believing he needed to become stronger, easier to care for, less dependent, less frightened, less visibly ill.

He had treated his own suffering like an inconvenience that he needed to apologize for.

Now he understood that no amount of strength would have made Darius honest.

No amount of recovery would have guaranteed Tiana's loyalty.

He could not have controlled their choices by being a better patient, a more cheerful boyfriend, or a less frightened man.

Those choices belonged to them.

His phone vibrated once more.

A message from Darius appeared.

I know Simone talked to you. Whatever she sent, there's context you're missing. Please meet me. Just you and me, like brothers.

Malcolm stared at the final three words.

Like brothers.

He remembered the living room, the kiss, and Darius's attempt to use that word as if history could protect him from accountability.

He began typing.

You don't get to call me your brother when you need me to trust you. You don't get to use our history as a shield while refusing to tell me the truth.

He paused, his fingers trembling slightly.

Then he added:

If you have something to say, write it down. I'm done having conversations where you decide what I can handle.

He sent the message.

Darius didn't reply.

Malcolm placed the phone beside him and looked out at the morning sky.

The truth had not given him relief. It had made the betrayal larger, stretching it backward through weeks of conversations and quiet justifications.

But it had also taken away one terrible burden.

He no longer had to wonder whether his illness had made him unworthy of honesty.

He knew what had happened.

He knew that the people he loved had made choices behind his back.

And he knew that he was allowed to decide what happened next.

Renee rose to collect the breakfast bags.

"Do you want me to stay?""

Malcolm looked at his sister.

"Yes.""

She nodded.

"Then I'm staying.""

He leaned back against the pillows, exhausted but no longer entirely alone.

Outside, the morning continued.

Inside, Malcolm began the painful work of separating the life he had imagined from the life he would have to build.

He didn't know whether he would ever forgive Tiana.

He didn't know whether Darius would ever admit the full extent of what he had done.

But one thing was certain.

The betrayal had not begun with a kiss on a gray sofa.

May you like

It had begun when two people decided that Malcolm's suffering gave them permission to keep secrets from him.

And he would never again confuse someone else's silence with his own inability to understand the truth.
