Chapter 7: My Brother's Secret
For a moment, I thought I had misheard her.
Daniel.
My younger brother. The man who had stood beside me at Sarah's funeral, held my shoulder while I cried, and promised that I would never have to raise Lily alone.
The man who had introduced me to Vanessa at a charity fundraiser eighteen months after Sarah died.
I looked at the reinforced door.
"Rebecca, say that again.""
"My brother-in-law is paying Vanessa," Rebecca replied through the narrow window.
"Daniel has been sending her money for years.""
Vanessa let out a sharp, bitter laugh.
"She's delusional. She has always been delusional.""
Officer Ramirez turned toward her.
"Then you won't mind explaining why your sister believes she's been held in a locked room.""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"Rebecca has mental health problems. She disappears for weeks. She makes accusations. My family has been dealing with this for years.""
"Your family?"" I repeated.
Vanessa looked at me.
"Michael, please. You need to understand that everything I did was to protect you.""
"From my brother?""
"From the truth.""
The words silenced the basement.
I looked at the officers.
"I need to call Daniel.""
Ramirez shook her head slightly.
"Not yet. We need to preserve any evidence and establish who may be involved. Please don't contact anyone who could interfere with this investigation.""
But I was already thinking about the hundreds of conversations I'd had with my brother.
Daniel had helped me arrange Sarah's funeral. He'd driven me to the hospital when grief made me physically ill. When I finally returned to work, he had taken over some of my responsibilities at the family construction company.
He'd even helped Vanessa plan our wedding.
Every memory now had a shadow.
"Why would he do this?"" I asked Rebecca.
"Because of the money.""
"What money?""
"The money Sarah discovered.""
Rebecca's voice became strained.
"Your father left you a trust when you were a child. Daniel knew about it. Sarah found out he had been moving money out of the trust without your permission.""
I shook my head.
"My father left the company to both of us.""
"Not the trust," Rebecca replied.
"The trust was for you and Lily. Sarah found documents showing that Daniel had been transferring funds through a company Vanessa controlled.""
I looked at my wife.
She didn't look surprised.
That frightened me more than anything else.
"How much?"" I asked.
"Over two million dollars," Rebecca answered.
"Possibly more.""
I gripped the railing.
Daniel had always been the more ambitious brother. After our father died, he complained that I'd received the better opportunities because I was the older son. But I never imagined he would steal from Lily.
Or that Vanessa would help him.
Officer Cole was examining the electronic lock when a voice came from his radio.
"Unit responding, we have a possible identification on the additional occupant. Stand by.""
Ramirez acknowledged the message, then asked Cole to continue assessing the door.
Vanessa seized the opportunity.
"Michael, listen to me. Daniel made mistakes, but he never wanted anyone hurt.""
I turned toward her.
"Did he know Lily was being locked in a pantry?""
She looked away.
"Answer me!""
"I didn't tell him about the pantry.""
"Did he know about the basement?""
Vanessa's silence answered before she did.
"He knew about the room," she finally whispered.
My stomach turned.
"How long?""
"Michael—"
"How long has my brother known there's a woman locked beneath my house?""
Vanessa began crying again.
"Since before the wedding.""
I stared at her.
The woman I had married had concealed a person inside our home before she walked down the aisle toward me.
My brother had known.
And both of them had let me believe that my daughter was safe.
I took a step toward Vanessa, but Ramirez moved between us.
"Sir, please remain calm.""
I stopped immediately.
I didn't want Lily to see me lose control. She had already watched too many adults use anger to frighten children.
Instead, I knelt beside her.
"Princess, I'm going to ask you something. You can tell me the truth, okay?""
She nodded.
"Did Vanessa ever tell you not to tell me about the basement?""
"Yes.""
"What did she say?""
Lily twisted the hem of her pajama top.
"She said Daddy would leave me if he knew I was bad.""
I closed my eyes.
"Oh, sweetheart.""
"She said you wanted a new family. She said if I kept asking about Mama, you would send me away.""
I pulled her gently into my arms.
"I would never send you away.""
"But she said—"
"She lied.""
Lily began sobbing against my shoulder.
I held her while she cried, listening to the sound of her small breaths gradually settling.
Behind us, Rebecca struck the door again.
"Michael, please. There's something else.""
I looked up.
"What?""
"Daniel didn't just steal the money. He changed the documents after Sarah died.""
My head lifted.
"What documents?""
"The original trust agreement. Sarah had a copy. She left it with me.""
"Where is it?""
"Vanessa took it.""
My wife abruptly stopped crying.
Officer Ramirez noticed.
"Ma'am, do you know what she's talking about?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
Rebecca's voice grew urgent.
"Check her necklace.""
I looked at Vanessa's neck.
The chain was gone. The key had been placed on the counter upstairs, but something else glinted beneath the collar of her blouse.
A small silver pendant.
Vanessa pressed her hand over it.
"Don't touch me.""
Ramirez held out her hand.
"Ma'am, please show me the pendant.""
"No!""
Her sudden scream echoed through the basement.
Cole turned away from the door.
"Officer, we may have a problem.""
Vanessa backed toward the stairs.
Then her expression changed.
The fear disappeared, replaced by a strange, almost satisfied smile.
"You still don't understand," she said to me.
"Daniel isn't the person you should be worried about.""
I stared at her.
"Who else is involved?""
She looked toward Lily.
"Ask your daughter what she heard the night she saw her mother.""
Lily went rigid in my arms.
I felt her fingernails dig into my shirt.
"Papa," she whispered, "I remember now.""
I looked down at her.
"What do you remember?""
Her face crumpled.
"The night Mama died, Vanessa was in our house.""
Every officer in the basement fell silent.
Lily began to shake.
"She was talking to Uncle Daniel.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She no longer looked frightened.
She looked furious.
May you like
And then Lily whispered the words that changed everything.
"Uncle Daniel said, 'Make sure she never gets to tell Michael.''"
