Chapter 2: The Key Around Her Neck
The knocking stopped before I could move.
Three small knocks.
Then silence.
Vanessa stood between me and the pantry, her fist closed around the key hanging from her necklace. Her perfectly arranged hair had slipped over one shoulder, and for the first time since I'd known her, she looked genuinely frightened.
Not angry.
Frightened.
"Move away from the door," I said.
"You're overreacting.""
"Then open it.""
"There's nothing in there except cleaning supplies.""
I glanced at the lock. It was heavier than the one on the refrigerator, with scratches around the keyhole.
"Why does a cupboard for cleaning supplies need a padlock?""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"Because Lily gets into everything. She plays with chemicals, steals snacks, and refuses to listen. I'm the only person in this house who actually enforces boundaries.""
Behind me, Lily pressed her forehead against my back.
I could feel her trembling through my work shirt.
"Did you put her inside that pantry?""
Vanessa's lips tightened.
"I put her somewhere safe when she throws tantrums.""
"That's not what I asked.""
She looked toward Ethan and Chloe.
"Both of you, upstairs. Now.""
Neither child moved.
Ethan stared at his plate. Chloe had begun crying silently, tears falling onto the collar of her dress.
"Mom," Ethan said, his voice barely audible, "you told us not to talk about it.""
Vanessa turned on him.
"Do you want me to take your tablet away for a month?""
Ethan flinched.
I stepped forward.
"Don't threaten him.""
"I'm their mother!""
"And Lily is my daughter.""
"Exactly!"" Vanessa shouted.
"Your daughter. Your responsibility. I married you knowing I would have to help raise her, but I will not spend every evening catering to a child who thinks the world revolves around her.""
Lily's fingers tightened around my shirt.
I bent down.
"Sweetheart, when was the last time you ate a proper meal?""
She stared at the floor.
"Yesterday.""
My stomach twisted.
"What did you eat yesterday?""
"A little bread.""
"Anything else?""
She shook her head.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you hear that?""
"She's lying.""
"Then explain why she has no food in front of her.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"She refused dinner. I don't force children to eat.""
I pointed at the steak, potatoes, and cake.
"Your children are eating enough for three people.""
"They're growing.""
"So is Lily!""
My voice cracked across the kitchen.
Everyone fell silent.
I had never shouted at Vanessa before. I had never needed to. We argued occasionally, but she always managed to turn disagreements into calm conversations in which I somehow ended up apologizing.
This time, I wasn't apologizing.
I picked up Lily's plate and placed it on the table.
"Sit here, sweetheart.""
She didn't move.
"Papa, can I?""
"Can you what?""
"Eat at the table?""
The question nearly broke me.
"Of course you can.""
She took one hesitant step, then glanced at Vanessa.
My wife tapped her fingernails against the counter.
"Michael, if you give her food now, you're rewarding her behavior.""
I opened the refrigerator lock with a small pair of pliers from the kitchen drawer. The metal snapped loose after two attempts.
Vanessa gasped.
"That refrigerator belongs to this household!""
"And so does the food inside it.""
I pulled out milk, eggs, cheese, and leftover chicken. While I heated a small meal, Lily sat on a chair with her hands folded in her lap.
She watched every movement.
When I placed a plate in front of her, she didn't touch it.
"Lily?""
She whispered, "Will Vanessa be mad if I eat all of it?""
I crouched beside her chair.
"No one is allowed to punish you for eating.""
She looked at my face as if she were searching for a hidden condition.
Then she picked up her fork.
She took one bite.
Then another.
Halfway through the meal, she began eating so quickly that I gently reminded her to slow down.
Across the table, Chloe pushed her untouched cake away.
"Can Lily have mine?"" she asked.
Vanessa grabbed the plate.
"No.""
Chloe recoiled.
I took the cake from Vanessa's hand and placed it beside Lily's dinner.
"She can have dessert if she wants it.""
Vanessa stared at me with open contempt.
"You are making a terrible mistake.""
"No," I said.
"I think I've been making one for months.""
I turned toward the pantry.
The knocking didn't return.
I tried the handle. It was locked.
"Give me the key.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Absolutely not.""
"Then I'm calling the police.""
Her expression changed instantly.
She stepped toward me and lowered her voice.
"You don't understand what you're threatening. If the police come here, they'll ask questions about this family. They'll ask about your daughter. They'll ask why you've allowed all of this to happen.""
The words landed exactly where she intended.
For a second, I saw the trap she was setting: make me feel guilty enough to stop looking.
But Lily was sitting behind me, eating a meal she had apparently been afraid to ask for.
I took out my phone.
Vanessa lunged toward it.
"Michael, put that away!""
I stepped back.
"Touch me again, and you'll have to explain that, too.""
Her hand stopped in midair.
Then a small voice came from the pantry.
"Mr. Michael?""
I froze.
That wasn't Lily.
It was a child's voice I didn't recognize.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
I stared at the locked door.
"Who's in there?""
"No one," she whispered.
The voice came again.
"Please, sir. I'm hungry.""
I dialed emergency services.
Vanessa grabbed my wrist, but I pulled free.
As the call connected, Ethan suddenly stood up.
"Dad," he said, looking directly at me, "there's something you need to know about that room.""
I turned toward him.
He swallowed hard.
"Mom doesn't just lock Lily in there.""
May you like
His eyes filled with tears.
"She makes her go in there whenever someone comes to visit.""
