Chapter 1 - The Day Daddy Came Home Early

The leather strap cracked against the marble countertop.

Five-year-old Nia Williams screamed.

Her small hands were stretched flat across the kitchen island, their backs covered in angry red marks. Tears rolled down her cheeks, but she was too frightened to pull them away.

"KEEP YOUR HANDS RIGHT THERE!"

Sabrina Williams leaned over her daughter, gripping the dark leather strap so tightly that her knuckles had turned pale.

"I have told you a hundred times to listen to me! You think you can do whatever you want in this house?"

Nia shook her head.

"No, Mommy. I'm sorry."

"Then stop crying!"

The child tried.

She pressed her trembling lips together, swallowing her sobs until her breathing came in painful little gasps.

Sunlight poured through the enormous windows of the Williams family's expensive home in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Everything in the kitchen looked perfect.

White marble countertops.

Custom cabinets.

Fresh flowers arranged beside a stainless-steel refrigerator.

The kind of beautiful room Sabrina loved photographing for her social media accounts.

But nobody looking at those photographs would have known what happened there when her husband traveled for work.

And nobody was supposed to know.

Not until that afternoon.

The glass door connecting the patio entrance to the open living room slid backward.

Marcus Williams stepped inside, pulling a black suitcase.

He was thirty-six, a regional operations manager who had spent the previous four days attending meetings in Atlanta.

His flight had arrived earlier than expected.

He had imagined surprising Nia, lifting her into his arms, and hearing her excited little voice asking whether he'd brought her a present.

Instead, he heard her screaming.

Marcus stopped at the doorway.

Sabrina stood over their daughter with a leather strap in her hand.

Nia's little palms were flattened against the marble.

For one horrible second, Marcus couldn't understand what he was seeing.

Then Nia turned her head.

"DADDY!"

She yanked her hands away.

Sabrina reached forward.

"Nia! Get back here!"

But the child was already climbing down from the tall kitchen stool.

Her feet landed unevenly on the floor.

She ran around the open side of the island, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.

"Daddy! Please help me!"

Marcus released his suitcase.

It tipped sideways near the door.

He rushed forward and caught Nia as she threw herself into his arms.

She immediately wrapped both arms around his neck, burying her wet face against his shoulder.

Her little body shook uncontrollably.

"Daddy, Daddy, Daddy..."

"I'm here, baby. I've got you."

Marcus held her tightly.

Then he noticed her hands.

The skin across the backs of her fingers and palms was marked with painful red welts.

He stared at them.

"Nia..."

She quickly tried to hide them against his chest.

Marcus felt something inside him collapse.

"Baby, who did this?"

Nia began crying harder.

He turned toward Sabrina.

"What happened to her hands?"

Sabrina stepped around the kitchen island.

"Don't start making a scene, Marcus. She was being disobedient."

Marcus looked at the strap.

Then at his daughter.

"How long has this been happening?"

Sabrina rolled her eyes.

"You're never home, and somebody has to teach her discipline."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"You call THAT discipline?"

"Don't raise your voice at me in my own kitchen."

Marcus turned fully toward her, still holding Nia securely against his side.

Sabrina pointed at the child.

"She's spoiled because you let her get away with everything!"

Marcus lost control.

His free hand struck Sabrina across the face.

The sound echoed through the kitchen.

Sabrina staggered half a step, her hand flying to her cheek.

The strap slipped from her fingers and landed beside a kitchen stool.

She stared at him.

"You HIT me? Because of that spoiled little girl?"

Marcus's breathing grew ragged.

Before he could answer, Nia lifted her tearstained face.

"Daddy..."

He looked down.

Her next words nearly stopped his heart.

"Mommy hurts me every time you go away."

Marcus froze.

"I ask her to stop, Daddy. I promise I try to be good."

Sabrina pointed at Nia.

"She's lying! Are you really going to believe a five-year-old over your wife?"

Marcus's anger surged again.

He struck Sabrina a second time.

She lost her balance, fell sideways, and landed hard on the marble floor.

For a moment she remained there, supporting herself with one hand, her hair falling across her face.

Nia buried her face against Marcus's neck.

Marcus stood above Sabrina, shaking with anger.

"You will never touch my daughter like that again."

His voice became cold.

"This marriage is over."

Sabrina looked up at him.

Her mouth opened, but no words came.

The woman who had controlled every detail of that household suddenly looked terrified.

And Marcus had no idea how much worse the truth was about to become.
