Chapter 6: The Name on the Account

Nobody moved.

Eric Langley stood halfway down the aisle with the document still raised in one hand.

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“What account?””

Vanessa’s lips moved, but no sound came out.

Eric answered for her.

“The deposit account attached to the property transaction.””

Marcus turned on him.

“I wasn’t asking you.””

Eric stopped.

Marcus faced Vanessa again.

“What account?””

Her breathing became shallow.

“Marcus…”

“Don’t say my name like that.””

She swallowed.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.””

A bitter laugh escaped Darnell from the front pew.

Marcus didn’t even look at him.

“How was it supposed to happen?””

Vanessa wiped her face with trembling fingers.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“After everything settled.””

“What does that mean?””

“The sale.””

Evelyn made a small sound.

Marcus heard it.

He turned.

His mother looked as if somebody had reached inside her chest and squeezed her heart.

“That house belonged to your father,” she whispered.

Vanessa looked toward her.

“I know.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice strengthened.

“No, you don’t.””

She rolled her wheelchair forward.

“My husband worked thirty-three years at the rail yard. Took overtime when his knees were already bad. Fixed that house room by room with his own hands.””

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“He planted every oak tree lining that driveway.””

“I wasn’t trying to take that away from you.””

“You already tried.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was trying to make something out of it.””

Evelyn stared at her.

“It was already something.””

That silenced her.

Marcus looked at Eric.

“Explain the account.””

Eric hesitated.

“I was told Mrs. Carter had approved the transaction.””

“By who?””

Eric glanced toward Vanessa.

Marcus laughed once.

“Of course.””

Eric continued carefully.

“Ms. Reed represented herself as acting with Mrs. Carter’s consent. She said formal authority would follow after the wedding.””

Marcus looked down at the papers.

“You transferred two hundred thousand dollars before receiving final authorization?””

Eric’s expression tightened.

“It was an earnest-money deposit held pending completion.””

“In my mother’s name?””

“Yes.””

“But not controlled by her.””

Eric hesitated again.

“No.””

“Who controlled it?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Eric said, “Ms. Reed was listed as the account administrator.””

Lorraine whispered, “Jesus.””

Pastor Williams lowered his head.

Marcus felt strangely calm.

That frightened him more than anger would have.

“Where is the money now?””

Eric looked at Vanessa.

She stepped backward.

Marcus noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She shook her head.

“I can fix it.””

“Where is it?””

“I said I can fix it.””

His voice rose.

“Where is the money?””

She flinched.

“Some of it moved.””

The room erupted.

“What does some mean?”” Marcus demanded.

Vanessa began crying again.

“I had bills.””

Marcus stared.

“No.””

“My father had bills.””

“No.””

“We were about to lose everything.””

“No.””

She shouted through tears.

“I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO!””

The force of her voice startled everyone.

For a moment she stood there shaking in the center aisle, wedding dress spread around her like wreckage.

Marcus spoke softly.

“How much?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“How much of that two hundred thousand dollars is gone?””

“Marcus…”

“How much?””

She lowered her hands.

“One hundred and twenty.””

Evelyn gasped.

Marcus stared at her.

“One hundred twenty thousand dollars?””

Vanessa nodded.

His jaw flexed.

“You took one hundred twenty thousand dollars from a real-estate deposit connected to property you don’t own?””

“I was going to put it back.””

“With what?””

“The sale proceeds.””

Marcus shut his eyes.

The logic was so broken he could barely follow it.

She would use money from a fraudulent transaction to cover money removed from that same fraudulent transaction once the fraudulent transaction became legitimate.

All she needed was Evelyn’s signature.

And apparently a marriage certificate to make everyone easier to pressure.

Marcus opened his eyes.

“Did my mother ever authorize you to open anything in her name?””

“No.””

“Did she ever authorize you to communicate with Mr. Langley?””

“No.””

“Did she ever tell you she wanted to sell?””

Silence.

Marcus stepped toward her.

“Did she?””

“No.””

Evelyn started crying.

Vanessa looked toward her.

“Mama Evelyn—”

“I told you not to call me that.””

Vanessa winced.

Marcus turned to Eric.

“How did you not verify any of this?””

Eric’s expression hardened defensively.

“I was provided copies of identification, tax records, property documentation—”

Marcus went still.

“What identification?””

Vanessa looked down.

Marcus saw it.

He turned slowly.

“What did you give him?””

“Copies.””

“Copies of what?””

She whispered, “Your mother’s documents.””

Evelyn looked confused.

“What documents?””

Vanessa’s silence answered before her words did.

Marcus remembered something.

Three months earlier.

Evelyn had called him because she couldn’t find the folder containing her passport, deed copy, and insurance documents.

They eventually reappeared.

Evelyn assumed she had misplaced them.

Marcus felt cold.

“You took them.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I borrowed them.””

“You stole my mother’s personal records.””

“I put them back.””

“That does not make it borrowing.””

Vanessa looked around as if searching for one person willing to rescue her.

Her parents avoided her eyes.

Nia was crying.

The bridesmaids looked stunned.

Marcus’s relatives looked furious.

Even Pastor Williams seemed unable to find words.

Vanessa turned to Eric.

“You said this was confidential.””

Eric’s eyebrows rose.

“You told me the owner consented.””

“You should not be here.””

“You stopped answering your phone after transferring funds from the holding account.””

She snapped, “Because I was getting married!””

“And my company’s attorneys advised me to obtain confirmation today.””

“Your attorneys?””

Marcus caught the word.

Eric went quiet.

“What attorneys?””

Eric looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Carter, there is another issue.””

Vanessa suddenly moved.

Fast.

She grabbed for the document in his hand.

Darnell intercepted her wrist.

“Enough.””

“Let go of me!””

“You’re done grabbing people.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Darnell.””

Darnell released her.

Vanessa backed away, breathing hard.

Marcus looked at Eric.

“What other issue?””

Eric opened his briefcase again.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Don’t.””

Eric removed another folder.

Marcus saw Vanessa’s face and knew this one was worse.

“What is it?””

Eric spoke carefully.

“The signature page originally submitted to our office.””

Evelyn frowned.

“What signature?””

Eric walked forward.

He stopped in front of her.

“Mrs. Carter, I need to ask you something.””

Marcus crouched beside his mother.

Eric showed her the page.

At the bottom was a handwritten signature.

Evelyn Carter.

She stared.

Then slowly shook her head.

“That is not mine.””

Vanessa’s knees nearly buckled.

Marcus looked at her.

Every emotion disappeared from his face.

“You forged my mother’s signature?””

Vanessa started shaking her head.

“I practiced it but—”

She stopped.

Too late.

Marcus’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“You practiced it?””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Lorraine whispered, “Oh, my God.””

Vanessa backed toward the pew.

“I didn’t submit that.””

Eric raised the page.

“My office received it from your email.””

“I didn’t mean for it to be final.””

“You sent a forged signature.””

“I was desperate!””

Marcus took one step toward her.

Pastor Williams moved closer, perhaps expecting violence.

Marcus stopped himself immediately.

He would not give Vanessa another victim to hide behind.

Instead, he took out his phone.

Vanessa stared at it.

“What are you doing?””

Marcus unlocked the screen.

She already knew.

“No.””

He dialed.

“Marcus, please.””

The call connected.

“Yes,” Marcus said.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“I need police at New Hope Baptist Church.””

Her face collapsed.

“Marcus!””

He never looked away from her.

“There appears to be identity theft, forgery, and unauthorized financial activity involving my mother.””

Vanessa rushed forward.

Nia caught her.

“Stop!””

“No!””

Vanessa screamed Marcus’s name.

He continued giving the church address.

May you like

Evelyn began crying harder.

And beyond the stained-glass windows, somewhere in the distance, sirens began to rise.
