Chapter 1 - The Breakfast That Changed Everything

“DON’T YOU DARE TALK BACK TO ME AT THIS TABLE!”
Vanessa Carter's voice tore through the bright kitchen.
Twelve-year-old Nia sat rigid in her white pajamas, gripping the edge of the polished dining table. Tears rolled down her cheeks and fell beside a plate of scrambled eggs, toast, and strawberries.
Beside her, eight-year-old Caleb stopped chewing.
Their mother stood near the marble kitchen island, wearing a black silk robe. She had just set down a white plate when her daughter's attempt to explain herself ignited another argument.
“I just want you to listen to me!” Nia cried. “Why do you always treat me like this?”
Vanessa took an angry step toward her.
“Because you don't know when to stop! I tell you something, and suddenly you have a hundred excuses!”
“I wasn't making excuses!”
“Don't you dare raise your voice at me!”
Nia's mouth fell open.
Her mother had been shouting for several minutes. Yet the moment Nia tried to defend herself, she became the disrespectful one.
Caleb lowered his fork.
He wanted to reach for his sister's hand.
But Vanessa was watching.
Suddenly, hurried footsteps sounded from the hallway.
Marcus Carter entered wearing a tailored navy-blue suit, his briefcase still in one hand.
He had been preparing to leave for his architectural firm's office when he heard the shouting.
Now he stopped dead.
His daughter was crying.
His son looked frightened.
And his wife was standing over the breakfast table with an expression of complete defiance.
“What the hell are you doing to our daughter?”
Vanessa turned sharply.
“Excuse me?”
Marcus dropped his briefcase beside the doorway.
“You heard me.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“I'm teaching her how to behave. Stay out of it.”
Marcus moved toward the table.
“Teaching her?”
He pointed sharply beside the stack of toast.
“Look at her, Vanessa! She's sitting here crying right in front of you! And you still think you're right?”
“She's crying because she didn't get her way!”
“She's twelve years old!”
“And I'm her mother!”
Marcus stepped closer.
“That doesn't mean you get to treat her like this.”
Vanessa laughed coldly.
“Oh, please. You spend three nights a week in Atlanta, and suddenly you want to lecture me about parenting?”
The words struck a nerve.
For five months, Marcus had been traveling regularly to supervise a major commercial development.
He knew his absence placed more responsibility on Vanessa.
But what he was seeing was not an ordinary disagreement over chores.
Nia looked terrified.
“Daddy?”
Marcus immediately turned.
His daughter's voice was shaking.
“This isn't the first time.”
Vanessa's smile vanished.
“Nia, don't start.”
Marcus raised a hand.
“Let her finish.”
Nia wiped her wet cheeks.
“She gets angry like this when you're away.”
Vanessa scoffed.
“That's ridiculous.”
“And sometimes she won't talk to me afterward,” Nia continued. “Even if I say I'm sorry.”
Marcus stared at his daughter.
“Sorry for what?”
Nia looked down.
“Sometimes I don't know.”
The words left him speechless.
Beside her, Caleb pushed his plate away.
Marcus noticed the boy watching Vanessa instead of his father.
“Caleb? Do you know what Nia's talking about?”
The little boy nodded.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Enough. You're not turning my children against me.”
Marcus turned toward her.
“Then answer my question.”
“What question?”
His voice dropped into something cold and controlled.
“How long has this been happening?”
Vanessa's lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Nia suddenly spoke again.
“Daddy, I tried to tell you before.”
Marcus looked at her.
“When?”
“Last month.”
She swallowed.
“And before that.”
Marcus frowned.
“Why didn't you tell me when I was home?”
Her next words made his stomach twist.
“I did try.”
She glanced nervously at Vanessa.
“Mom said you already knew. She said you agreed with everything.”
Marcus slowly turned back toward his wife.
Vanessa looked away.
May you like
For the first time, Marcus began to suspect that his absence had been used to make his daughter believe she had nowhere else to turn.
And he was about to discover how much had happened while he was gone.
