Chapter 12: Three Names on One Report
For a moment, I couldn't understand what my mother had said.
“Marcus was at the hospital the night I was born?””
Nia nodded.
“Why?”” I asked.
“He came with me.””
I stared at her.
“You were with David and Marcus on the night I was born?””
“Yes.””
Tasha sat down slowly.
“How could that even happen?””
My mother gripped the back of a chair.
“Because the circumstances were complicated, and because I made choices that I have regretted for seventeen years.””
“Stop saying things are complicated!”” I cried.
“Tell us what happened!””
Nia looked at me.
“I was still involved with David when I met Marcus. I didn't know what I wanted. David and I had been arguing for months. Marcus offered me stability, and I let myself believe that stability would solve everything.””
“Were you dating both of them?”” Tasha asked.
My mother flinched.
“For a short time, yes.””
I felt sick.
“Did David know about Marcus?””
“He knew I had met someone else. He didn't know how serious it had become.””
“And Marcus knew about David?””
“Yes.””
Tasha stood and began pacing.
“So both men knew you were pregnant, but neither knew the whole situation?””
“Not at first.””
“Then what happened?””
Nia sat down.
“When you were born, David came to the hospital. He wanted to see you and discuss how we would raise you. Marcus arrived later because I had asked him to bring some things from home.””
I stared at her.
“Why was he involved in the paternity test?””
“Because I was frightened. I wanted certainty before making a decision about the future.””
“Then why did you let Marcus handle it?””
“Because he said he knew how to arrange a reliable test.””
Tasha folded her arms.
“And when the report said David wasn't Maya's father, you believed him.””
“Yes.””
“Even though Elizabeth said the report was wrong?””
My mother nodded.
“I believed Marcus had shown me the original result. I didn't know that Elizabeth had found inconsistencies until much later.””
I sat down, trying to make sense of the timeline.
“What happened to David after the test?””
Nia wiped her cheeks.
“He left the hospital believing you weren't his child. Marcus told him the result had settled the matter.””
“Did you tell David yourself?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because I was afraid he would demand another test. Because I was afraid Marcus would leave. Because I didn't know what was true anymore.””
I stared at her.
“You let him walk away without knowing whether he was my father.””
“Yes.””
The honesty of the answer hurt more than another excuse would have.
Tasha sat beside me.
“What happened to Marcus after that?””
My mother looked down.
“He stayed. He helped me raise Maya. Eventually, we married.””
I turned toward her.
“Did you love him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why would he lie about my father?””
Nia shook her head.
“I don't know whether he lied about the result. I know he controlled the paperwork. I know Elizabeth believed the report had been misrepresented. I know I was too afraid to investigate further.””
It wasn't enough.
But it was the first explanation that acknowledged the limits of what she knew.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered immediately.
“Maya, the laboratory has sent an update. We found a reference to the third individual.””
I put him on speaker.
“Who was it?””
“The surviving record identifies the third person as Marcus Johnson.””
Tasha's mouth fell open.
My mother covered her face.
Daniel continued carefully.
“The record indicates that the comparison involved David Carter, Marcus Johnson, and Maya. It was intended to clarify a disputed biological relationship. The complete report is still unavailable, so I cannot tell you the conclusion.””
“Why would Marcus be included?”” I asked.
“The request references a possible familial relationship between the men. I don't want to speculate beyond that wording.””
I looked at my mother.
“Are David and Marcus related?””
Nia shook her head, but her expression suggested she wasn't certain.
Daniel said, “There is a note suggesting that the men may share a biological relative. We need more records to establish the relationship.””
Tasha gripped the edge of the table.
“Could they be brothers?””
“It's one possibility, but we do not have enough evidence to conclude that.””
My heart was pounding so hard I could barely hear the rest of his explanation.
Daniel told us that he had requested the complete report and that the laboratory would continue searching its archive. He also confirmed that Tasha's financial dispute had been formally acknowledged by the bank, although no decision had yet been made about recovering the funds.
When the call ended, nobody spoke.
Then Tasha whispered, “If Marcus and David are related, what does that mean for Maya?””
“I don't know,” I replied.
My mother stood and walked to the window.
“I remember something Elizabeth said,” she murmured.
We turned toward her.
“What?””
“She told me that Marcus had grown up believing one thing about his family, but that his father had kept secrets.””
“What secrets?””
“I don't know. Elizabeth said the truth could affect more than one generation.””
Tasha approached her.
“Did she ever mention a brother?””
My mother slowly turned.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“She said Marcus had a brother who was adopted by another family when they were young. But I never met him, and Marcus rarely discussed his childhood.””
I stared at her.
“Could that brother be David?””
“I don't know.””
The possibility was so enormous that I couldn't hold it in my mind.
If David and Marcus were brothers, then the story of my birth was even more complicated than any of us had imagined.
But it was only a possibility.
We needed evidence.
That evening, Tasha and I returned to the blue folder. We searched every page, every envelope, every handwritten note.
Near the back, beneath a copy of an old insurance statement, we found a folded family photograph.
It showed two boys standing beside a woman in front of a small brick house.
One boy was unmistakably Marcus, younger but recognizable.
The other had David's narrow face and the same dimple I saw in my own reflection.
On the back, Elizabeth had written:
Marcus and David, before the separation.
I stared at the photograph.
Tasha turned it over in her hands.
“They were brothers.””
My throat tightened.
The evidence was compelling, but we still didn't know the exact relationship or what it meant for the disputed test.
I called Daniel.
He asked us to send him a photograph of the image and cautioned us not to treat the inscription as definitive proof of legal or biological relationships. He promised to investigate the names and date.
After we hung up, Tasha sat beside me on the floor.
“If David and Marcus are brothers, that means Dad knew him before you were born.””
I nodded.
“And if he knew the paternity test might be wrong, he could have had a reason to keep David away.””
“Maybe.””
She looked at me.
“Do you think he wanted to raise you because he loved you, or because he didn't want David to have you?””
I had no answer.
The next morning, Daniel called again.
This time, his voice was more serious.
“The laboratory located an additional page from the second report. It confirms a close biological relationship between David Carter and Marcus Johnson. However, the page does not conclusively identify the exact relationship.””
I gripped the phone.
“What about my paternity?””
“That's where the report becomes more complicated. The surviving figures are incomplete, and one of the comparison markers appears to have been entered incorrectly in the first report. The laboratory is conducting a technical review.””
“Could the first result have been false?””
“Yes. The records raise that possibility. But I will not tell you that the second test proves David is your father until the laboratory authenticates the complete results.””
I closed my eyes.
For seventeen years, I had believed I knew the shape of my family.
Now every piece of evidence seemed to redraw it.
Daniel paused.
“There is one more thing. The original request for the second test was signed by Elizabeth, but the delivery instructions were changed afterward.””
“Changed by whom?””
“The surviving authorization bears Marcus Johnson's name.””
My hands went cold.
“Why would he change the delivery instructions?””
“We don't know. The record indicates that the final report was sent to a private address rather than the attorney handling Elizabeth's estate.””
“Which address?””
Daniel read it aloud.
I recognized it immediately.
Our house.
Marcus had received the report.
He had controlled the first one, too.
I stared at Tasha.
She had heard every word.
“He knew,” she whispered.
“Maybe,” I said, though the possibility was becoming harder to ignore.
Daniel added one final warning.
“Please don't confront him until we have secured the remaining records. If he has documents that belong to the estate, we need to establish what they are and how they were handled.””
I promised we would wait.
But when I hung up, I saw Marcus standing in the doorway.
He had heard enough to understand what we knew.
His gaze moved from me to Tasha, then to the family photograph on the floor.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he spoke in a voice so quiet it frightened me more than his shouting ever had.
“You were never supposed to see that picture.””
Tasha rose slowly.
“Why?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Because if you discover who David really is, you'll understand why I did everything I did.””
I held my breath.
“Who is he?””
Marcus's eyes filled with a strange mixture of anger and grief.
Then he answered.
“David Carter is my older brother.””
May you like
He paused.
“And the night you were born, I wasn't the only man who believed you might be his child.”” ```
