Chapter 4: The Photo
“Nothing happened.””
Danielle repeated it.
Marcus opened his eyes.
“Then tell me why he was there.””
“It wasn’t planned.””
“Why was he there?””
“We have mutual friends.””
“You said you hadn’t spoken to Andre in almost two years.””
“I hadn’t.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Danielle looked around.
“Can we please go inside?””
Marcus almost laughed.
Ten minutes earlier, she had demanded every family issue be discussed publicly.
Now that the questions were pointed at her, privacy had become important.
“No.””
“Marcus.””
“Why was your ex-boyfriend in New Orleans?””
Danielle’s mother stepped closer.
“Baby, you better answer him.””
Danielle looked betrayed.
“Mom.””
“I didn’t know Andre was there.””
Danielle turned away.
Marcus’s heartbeat became painfully loud.
“How many days?””
“What?””
“How many days were you with him?””
“I wasn’t with him.””
“How many days was he there?””
“One.””
Camille shook her head.
Danielle snapped toward her.
“Stay out of this!””
“No,” Marcus said.
His voice had become strangely calm.
“Let her talk.””
Danielle looked frightened for the first time that morning.
Camille hesitated.
“Kiara said he was there Friday and Saturday.””
Danielle’s eyes flashed.
“She doesn’t know what she’s talking about.””
Marcus held out his hand to Camille.
“Do you have the picture?””
“I told you, I didn’t—”
A voice came from behind them.
“I do.””
Everyone turned.
Evelyn stood at the top of the steps.
She had changed.
The ripped blue-gray dress was gone.
She now wore a simple black wrap dress from her closet, one that had clearly never been intended for a wedding.
Her hair remained immaculate.
Her face did not.
She looked tired.
Marcus stared at her.
“You have a picture?””
Evelyn slowly descended the steps.
Danielle’s face drained.
“Of course you do.””
Evelyn ignored her.
“Camille told me what she heard. I asked Kiara to send me what she had.””
“You investigated me?””
“I verified information before destroying my son’s life with a rumor.””
Danielle laughed bitterly.
“How noble.””
Marcus held out his hand.
“Mom.””
Evelyn stopped.
“Before I show you anything, understand something.””
“Show me.””
“It doesn’t prove she cheated.””
Danielle jumped in immediately.
“Exactly.””
Evelyn continued.
“It proves she lied.””
Marcus felt sick.
“Show me.””
His mother unlocked her phone.
She found the image.
Then handed it to him.
The photograph had been taken inside a rooftop bar.
Marcus recognized Danielle instantly.
She wore a short silver dress he had never seen.
Her arm was around a man.
Andre.
His arm rested around her waist.
Their faces were close.
Not kissing.
But close enough.
Marcus stared until the people in the picture blurred.
Danielle approached.
“That picture looks worse than it was.””
Marcus laughed once.
It sounded broken.
“How was it?””
“We ran into each other.””
“And your arm accidentally went around him?””
“It was a group picture.””
Marcus zoomed out.
She was right.
There were six people.
Two had been cropped out when the image first appeared on screen.
But Andre’s hand remained around her waist.
Danielle touched Marcus’s arm.
“I swear to you.””
He pulled away.
She froze.
“Did you tell me he was there?””
“No.””
“Did you tell me Tasha wasn’t?””
Danielle looked down.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew you’d react like this.””
Marcus stared at her.
“No. You knew I’d ask questions.””
“Because your family already poisoned you against me.””
“My family didn’t make you lie.””
Danielle’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t cheat on you.””
“Did you kiss him?””
“No.””
“Did you sleep with him?””
“No!””
“Did he stay at your hotel?””
Her silence lasted half a second too long.
Marcus stepped backward.
Danielle rushed forward.
“Not in my room.””
“Danielle.””
“The group had rooms at the same hotel.””
“You told me you were staying with Tasha.””
“She canceled late.””
“And you forgot to mention that?””
“I knew how it would sound.””
Marcus rubbed both hands over his face.
He felt foolish.
Not because he had trusted her.
Because he suddenly realized how many contradictions he had ignored simply because asking about them would lead to another argument.
Evelyn spoke quietly.
“Marcus, that’s all I have.””
He returned the phone.
“Why didn’t you show me?””
“Because you were getting married.””
“That’s exactly why you should’ve shown me.””
“I needed to know more.””
Danielle laughed.
“You wanted ammunition.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“No.””
“Stop pretending.””
“I was hoping the picture was innocent.””
“Sure.””
“I was.””
“Why?””
Evelyn’s voice cracked.
“Because my son loves you.””
That silenced Danielle.
Evelyn blinked tears away.
“You think I wanted this?””
She pointed toward the decorated cars.
“The flowers? The church? Two hundred people waiting?””
Her voice shook.
“I have spent a year hoping I was wrong about you.””
Danielle’s mouth tightened.
“You never gave me a chance.””
“I gave you hundreds.””
“No. You judged me from the first dinner.””
Evelyn frowned.
“The first dinner?””
“When I said I wanted to start my own business and you asked whether I had a financial plan.””
“I ask everybody that.””
“You looked at Marcus afterward.””
“Because Marcus is an accountant.””
Danielle laughed bitterly.
“There’s always an excuse.””
Something shifted in Marcus.
He finally understood that Danielle had constructed a world in which every question was disrespect.
Every boundary was rejection.
Every disagreement was betrayal.
And yet he still loved her.
That was the terrible part.
Love did not disappear just because clarity arrived.
Danielle looked at him.
“Marcus, please.””
Her voice softened.
“I messed up by not telling you Andre was there.””
He said nothing.
“But I didn’t cheat.””
She stepped closer.
“I swear.””
Marcus wanted to believe her.
He desperately wanted to believe her.
Then Leah approached.
“Marcus?””
He turned.
She looked apologetic.
“The drivers need a decision.””
Nobody spoke.
Leah checked her watch.
“If we don’t leave within five minutes, the church coordinator says the ceremony will need to be shortened because another service is scheduled this afternoon.””
Danielle immediately grabbed Marcus’s hand.
“Then let’s go.””
He looked down at their joined hands.
Four years together.
The first night they met at a charity fundraiser.
Their first apartment key.
Christmas mornings.
Sunday breakfasts.
Her head on his shoulder during movies.
His proposal under the magnolia tree at Piedmont Park.
People were complicated.
Relationships were complicated.
Was one lie enough to erase everything?
Then Marcus noticed someone approaching from the far end of the driveway.
A man in a dark suit.
Not a relative.
Not wedding staff.
Danielle saw him too.
Her fingers suddenly tightened around Marcus’s hand.
Evelyn frowned.
“Who is that?””
The man stopped near the first car.
“I’m looking for Danielle Carter.””
Danielle went perfectly still.
Marcus felt her grip loosen.
The stranger held a small envelope.
“My name is Calvin Brooks.””
Danielle whispered something under her breath.
Marcus looked at her.
“You know him?””
Calvin answered before she could.
“She does.””
He glanced at the wedding dress.
May you like
Then at Marcus.
“And before you marry her, there’s something you need to know about New Orleans.””
