Chapter 6: The Setup

Andre stared at Vanessa’s message until the words stopped looking like English.

Someone told me exactly what to say to you.

He read it again.

Then again.

His mother watched him from the porch chair.

“Andre?””

He finally looked up.

“I need to make a call.””

Gloria’s expression sharpened.

“To that girl?””

Andre nodded.

“You sure?””

“No.””

That answer made his mother smile faintly.

“At least you know.””

Andre stood and walked toward the far end of the porch.

He called the number.

Vanessa answered before the first full ring ended.

“Hello?””

Her voice sounded nothing like it had at the barbecue.

No arrogance.

No practiced softness from the apology video.

She sounded frightened.

“It’s Andre.””

“I know.””

“You said somebody told you what to say.””

Silence.

“Vanessa.””

“I need you to promise you won’t tell my father until I finish.””

Andre looked back toward Gloria.

“I’m not promising anything.””

“Then I can’t—”

“Then we’re done.””

“Wait.””

Andre said nothing.

Vanessa inhaled shakily.

“A man named Calvin Price contacted me about two weeks ago.””

Andre’s grip tightened around the phone.

He knew the name.

Not personally.

But everyone in Atlanta development circles knew Calvin Price.

Price was the founder of Meridian Urban Partners, one of Bennett & Cole’s biggest competitors.

More importantly, Meridian had lost the preliminary bid for the same south-side redevelopment project Andre’s company was pursuing.

“What did Calvin want?””

“He said he knew my father’s company was bidding on your project.””

Andre began walking slowly along the porch.

“And?””

“He told me you were going to destroy our proposal.””

“Why?””

“He said you already had another community consulting group picked.””

“That’s a lie.””

“I know that now.””

“But you believed him then?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I believed enough.””

Andre’s voice hardened.

“What does that have to do with my barbecue?””

“Calvin told me you had a reputation.””

“For what?””

“For pretending to be humble.””

Andre stopped walking.

Vanessa continued quickly.

“He said you liked making powerful people uncomfortable. That you’d show up looking ordinary, wait for somebody to underestimate you, then use it against them.””

Andre almost laughed.

“That doesn’t even make sense.””

“It did when he said it.””

“Because you wanted it to.””

Silence.

Vanessa did not argue.

Andre leaned against the porch railing.

“So Calvin somehow knew you were coming to my house?””

“No. Not at first.””

“What does that mean?””

“I told him.””

“Why were you even talking to him?””

Vanessa’s answer came quietly.

“Because he offered me a job.””

Andre’s eyes narrowed.

“At Meridian?””

“Yes.””

Everything began rearranging itself.

“When?””

“And your father knows?””

“No.””

Andre looked toward the dark street.

“What kind of job?””

“Vice president of public affairs.””

Andre gave a humorless laugh.

“You’ve got to be kidding.””

“I know how it sounds.””

“Do you?””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“Yes.””

Andre said nothing.

She continued.

“Calvin said my father would never let me become more than his daughter. He said Meridian would.””

“And all you had to do was what?””

“At first? Nothing.””

Andre waited.

“Then I mentioned Derrick had invited me to a barbecue and that you might be there.””

The silence between them deepened.

“What did Calvin say?””

“He laughed.””

Andre felt cold despite the warm Georgia night.

“He said maybe I should test his theory.””

“What theory?””

“That you enjoyed humiliating people.””

Andre’s jaw tightened.

“He told you to insult me.””

“He didn’t say it exactly like that.””

“Don’t do that.””

Vanessa went quiet.

“Don’t start hiding behind wording again.””

Another long pause.

Then she said, “Yes.””

Andre closed his eyes.

“He said if I made a few comments about you looking like staff, one of two things would happen.””

“What?””

“You’d laugh it off, and Calvin would be wrong about you.””

“And the other?””

“You’d explode.””

Andre understood.

“And if I exploded?””

“He said people would see what you were really like.””

Andre shook his head.

“He wanted a video.””

“Yes.””

That explained the livestream.

“You weren’t broadcasting because you thought it was funny.””

“Not completely.””

“Vanessa.””

“I started it because he told me that if anything happened, I needed proof.””

Andre felt anger rising for the first time since the barbecue.

Not the sharp embarrassment Vanessa had tried to provoke.

Something colder.

“So he used you to manufacture a confrontation.””

“Yes.””

“And you agreed.””

Vanessa began crying quietly.

Andre did not soften.

“You could’ve stopped.””

“I know.””

“When Maya told you to stop, you kept going.””

“I know.””

“When I ignored you, you kept going.””

“I know.””

“When Derrick laughed, you enjoyed it.””

Vanessa’s breath caught.

“Yes.””

Andre gripped the railing.

“Then don’t tell yourself Calvin made you do what you did.””

“I’m not.””

“You better not.””

Vanessa’s voice became steadier.

“That’s why I called.””

Andre frowned.

“What?””

“I spent all weekend blaming you, Calvin, the internet, my father—everybody except me.””

She exhaled.

“Then my father told me I was finished at the company.””

Andre remained silent.

“And for the first time in my life, nobody fixed it.””

Her voice broke again.

“I hated him for about six hours.””

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

“Then?””

“Then I watched the full livestream.””

Andre looked down.

“Not the edited one.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I watched myself.””

Something in those words sounded different.

“I watched Maya try to stop me. I watched you ignore me. I watched myself get louder because you wouldn’t give me the reaction I wanted.””

She sniffed.

“And I realized Calvin didn’t put those words in my mouth.””

Andre said nothing.

“He just figured out they were already in me.””

The porch became very quiet.

Then Andre asked the question that mattered.

“Do you have proof?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Yes.””

“What kind?””

“Messages.””

Andre straightened.

“Andre… there’s more.””

He closed his eyes.

“There’s always more.””

“Calvin messaged me after the video went viral.””

“What did he say?””

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“He told me not to panic.””

Andre waited.

“He said, ‘If Bennett retaliates against your father’s company, we’ll have everything we need.’”

Andre’s expression hardened.

Everything they need.

A public accusation of retaliation.

A discrimination controversy.

A reason to challenge the redevelopment procurement process.

Possibly even grounds to delay the entire project.

Vanessa continued.

“He wanted your company trapped.””

Andre was already thinking three moves ahead.

“If we rejected Carter Urban Strategies, Calvin could argue personal retaliation.””

“Yes.””

“And if we kept them?””

“He knew my father’s company would be damaged anyway.””

Andre exhaled.

Calvin had built a situation where everybody lost except Meridian.

“You need to send me those messages.””

“I will.””

“And don’t delete anything.””

“I won’t.””

Andre turned.

His mother was still sitting quietly behind him.

Vanessa spoke again.

“There’s one more thing.””

Andre almost groaned.

“What?””

“Calvin wasn’t working alone.””

Andre froze.

“How do you know?””

“Because he accidentally sent me a screenshot instead of a message Friday morning.””

“Of what?””

“A group chat.””

Andre’s pulse accelerated.

“Who was in it?””

“I only saw three names.””

“Calvin?””

“Yes.””

“Who else?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“One was somebody named Brent Holloway.””

Andre did not recognize it.

“And the third?””

This time Vanessa stayed silent long enough that Andre checked the phone.

“Vanessa?””

“I’m here.””

“Who was the third?””

Her answer came as a whisper.

Andre’s entire body went still.

“Terrence Cole.””

Andre did not breathe.

His business partner.

His best friend of fifteen years.

The man sitting beside him while they watched Vanessa’s apology.

The man who had helped him build Bennett & Cole from nothing.

May you like

Andre lowered the phone.

For the first time since the barbecue began, calm deserted him completely.
