Chapter 5: The Father Who Came Back for More Than Love

Nia stared at Darius as if she were waiting for him to turn into someone she recognized.

“What trust are they talking about?”” she asked again.

Darius rubbed his jaw.

“It's complicated.””

“Then explain it simply.””

He glanced at the finance representative.

“This is not the place.””

Nia gave a disbelieving laugh.

“You had no problem making this the place when you took my bouquet and told everyone you were my father.””

“That was different.””

“How?””

“Because I was trying to give you the wedding you deserved.””

She looked toward the paused orchestra, the silent servers, and the white roses that had begun to droop beneath the ballroom's warm lights.

“By using a trust I don't even know about?””

Darius lowered his voice.

“I was protecting your future.””

I recognized the phrase. It was the kind of phrase people used when they wanted to make selfishness sound like sacrifice.

Vanessa carefully closed the financial folder.

“Mr. Cole, I recommend that you discuss the trust with your legal representative. The hotel will not make any determination regarding ownership of assets. Our immediate concern is the event's outstanding financial commitments.””

The finance representative nodded.

“We can review the wedding guarantee separately. But the supplemental agreement appears to reference funds that may not belong to the guarantor.””

Darius's eyes narrowed.

“You don't know who owns those funds.””

“That's precisely why we need clarification.””

Nia took a step backward.

“Dad, you told me you had money set aside for me.””

“I do.””

“How much?””

He hesitated.

“How much?”” she repeated.

“Enough to help you and Ethan start your marriage.””

Ethan crossed his arms.

“Then why did you tell us Marcus needed to cover everything because you were waiting for a business deal to close?””

Darius turned sharply.

“I never said that.””

“You told Nia you had money coming in. You said you couldn't access it until the wedding arrangements were finalized.””

Nia looked at Ethan.

“You knew about that?””

“I knew he said he had a business deal. I didn't know anything about a trust.””

Darius pointed at him.

“Stay out of this.””

Ethan didn't move.

“I'm not going to stand here while you ask my fiancée to trust you with information you refuse to explain.””

The word fiancée sounded strangely uncertain in the silent ballroom.

Nia reached for her veil and pulled it away from her face.

“Dad, please. I chose you because I believed you wanted to be part of my life.””

His expression softened instantly.

“And I do, sweetheart.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

He looked at her for several seconds before sighing.

“When I came back, I learned that your mother and Marcus had made certain financial arrangements for you.””

Elena stiffened.

“What arrangements?””

Darius ignored her.

“I also learned there was a family trust established years ago. I believed you were entitled to access it once you married.””

My attention sharpened.

I knew about a trust.

But not the one Darius seemed to be describing.

When Nia turned eighteen, Elena and I had established an education fund for her. I had contributed money every year, intending it to cover college expenses and give her a secure start in adult life.

After she graduated, we had converted the remaining balance into a long-term trust.

The account was in Nia's name, managed according to specific terms.

Darius had never been involved.

I looked at him.

“How did you learn about that account?””

He gave me a thin smile.

“Financial records are not as private as you think.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“I spoke to Elena.””

I turned toward my wife.

She looked stunned.

“Darius asked whether Nia had any investments,” Elena said.

“He told me he wanted to make sure she was protected before the wedding.””

“And you told him about the trust?””

“I didn't tell him the balance.””

“But you told him it existed.””

She nodded reluctantly.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

The trust wasn't secret from Nia. She had known about it since she was eighteen. What she didn't know was that Darius had been asking questions about it.

“Why did you need information about her money?”” I asked him.

Darius spread his hands.

“Because I wanted to help her manage it.””

“You have outstanding debts.””

“That has nothing to do with my intentions.””

“It has everything to do with your intentions if you're using her assets to support your repayment plan.””

His expression hardened.

“You don't get to decide what kind of father I am.””

“No. Your choices do that.””

Nia stepped between us.

“Stop it! Both of you!””

She was trembling now, her bouquet forgotten on the table.

“Marcus, you don't get to turn every conversation into a competition. Dad is trying to explain.””

I looked at her.

“Then let him.””

She turned toward Darius.

He opened his mouth, then looked away.

That silence was the first honest thing he had given her all day.

Vanessa's phone rang. She stepped aside to answer, then returned with a worried expression.

“The hotel has confirmed that the outstanding balance cannot be covered under the existing guarantee unless an approved replacement is provided. The ceremony and reception services will remain suspended.””

Darius scoffed.

“Fine. I'll provide the replacement.””

The finance representative shook his head.

“You will need to demonstrate the funds are available and that the payment does not violate the terms of any existing agreement.””

Darius took out his phone.

“I can arrange a transfer.””

“From which account?”” the representative asked.

“My business account.””

“Then we need the necessary verification.””

Darius moved toward the corridor.

“I'll make a call.””

Nia followed him.

“I'm coming with you.””

He stopped.

“No.””

She stared at him.

“What do you mean, no?””

“This is business. You don't need to be involved.””

“You just told everyone that this money was for me.””

“And I'm telling you to wait here.””

His voice was sharper than before.

Nia flinched.

Ethan moved beside her.

“Don't talk to her like that.””

Darius pointed at him.

“You have no idea what you're getting into.””

“I'm beginning to.””

Darius stormed into the corridor, phone pressed against his ear.

Through the open doorway, I watched him pace beneath the hotel's crystal wall lights. His gestures became increasingly frantic. He spoke in short bursts, stopped to listen, then pressed his fingers against his forehead.

When he returned, the smug expression was gone.

He walked straight toward the finance representative.

“The transfer may take longer than expected.””

“How long?”” she asked.

“I don't know.””

“Then we cannot authorize the services to resume.””

He slammed his palm against the table.

“This is ridiculous!””

A security officer stepped forward.

“Sir, please lower your voice.””

Darius turned toward the guests.

“Someone has deliberately sabotaged this wedding!””

No one answered.

Then Nia spoke.

“Dad, did you actually have the money?””

He looked at her.

“Of course.””

“Then why can't you pay?””

“Because Marcus has created a mess with these contracts.””

“Marcus isn't stopping you from transferring money from your own account.””

Darius's mouth tightened.

She took another step toward him.

“You said you were going to pay for the reception. You said you were going to help us buy a house. You said you had investments ready for me.””

“I do have investments!””

“Then show me.””

His eyes flashed.

“You don't trust me?””

Nia's voice broke.

“I don't know what to believe anymore.””

For the first time, Darius looked genuinely wounded.

But rather than answer her, he turned toward me.

“You wanted this, didn't you? You wanted her to doubt me.””

I shook my head.

“No, Darius. I wanted her to be happy.””

“Then give the guarantee back.””

“No.””

His face darkened.

“You're willing to destroy her future because you're jealous of me.””

I looked at Nia, who was standing beneath the suspended floral arch with her veil hanging from one hand.

“No,” I said.

“I'm unwilling to risk my future because you're asking me to fund a lie.””

The finance representative gathered the documents.

“There's another step we need to take. Since the agreement references a trust, we will need written confirmation from the appropriate financial institution before accepting any payment connected to those funds.””

Darius went pale.

Nia noticed.

“Why?”” she whispered.

He didn't answer.

She reached for his sleeve.

“Dad, what happens if the trust can't be used?””

Darius looked at her.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Your wedding isn't the only thing that could fall apart.””

He walked away before she could question him further.

Nia remained where she was, staring after him.

Then Elena came to stand beside her.

“Sweetheart, perhaps we should all go home and discuss this privately.””

Nia slowly turned toward her mother.

“You knew he was asking about my trust?””

May you like

Elena's face drained of color.

And I knew from her expression that Darius hadn't been the only one keeping secrets.
