Chapter 4: The Debt Hidden Behind the Wedding

Vanessa turned the final page toward the light.

Darius lunged for the folder, but one of the hotel security officers stepped between him and the table.

“Sir, please remain where you are,” the officer said.

“That's my private financial information!”” Darius snapped.

“You have no right to show it to these people.””

Vanessa kept one hand on the document.

“You submitted this agreement as part of the hotel's financial arrangements. We are reviewing it because you have challenged the validity of the current guarantee.””

“I didn't challenge anything. Marcus did!””

“And your agreement contains a provision that may be affected by his withdrawal.””

Darius looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Not arrogance.

Not contempt.

Fear.

I leaned closer to the page.

The document referenced an outstanding business debt, a repayment schedule, and a personal guarantee signed by Darius Cole. The amount was $185,000, with additional penalties if the specified repayment conditions were not met.

Beneath the financial terms was a paragraph referring to a separate source of funds expected to become available through a family-sponsored event.

My family-sponsored event.

The wedding.

I looked up slowly.

“You used my guarantee as part of your financial plan?””

Darius shook his head.

“That's not what it says.””

“Then explain it.””

He glanced toward the guests. Several had begun whispering. Someone near the reception tables was recording on a phone until a hotel employee politely asked them to stop.

Darius lowered his voice.

“I was arranging a temporary financing solution. The wedding was going to generate enough business opportunities to help me settle the debt.””

“Business opportunities?”” I asked.

“From a wedding?””

“You don't understand how these things work.””

“I've owned a construction company for thirty years. Try explaining it to me.””

His mouth tightened.

Nia stepped between us.

“Stop talking to him like he's a criminal!””

I turned toward her.

“I haven't called him anything.””

“You're making him look terrible in front of everyone.””

“He's doing a fine job of explaining himself.””

“Marcus!””

Her voice cracked through the ballroom.

I saw several guests turn away, embarrassed to witness a family falling apart in public.

But I remembered the way she had shoved me. The way she had torn the boutonniere from my lapel. The way she had ordered me to pay and leave as though I were a hired employee who had overstayed his shift.

I would not apologize for asking a reasonable question.

Vanessa placed the folder on the table.

“Miss Cole, the hotel is not making any accusations. We're simply trying to determine which parties are financially responsible for the outstanding commitments.””

Nia turned on her.

“Then take his money!””

Darius stiffened.

“Nia, enough.””

She looked at him in disbelief.

“What?””

“I said enough.””

“You told me you had everything under control!””

His expression hardened.

“Don't question me in front of these people.””

The words silenced her.

For a moment, I saw the little girl who used to stand in my kitchen, clutching a broken toy and waiting for someone to tell her it would be all right.

Then Darius adjusted his cuff links and faced the hotel manager again.

“I will settle my obligations independently. The wedding should proceed.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That decision isn't mine to make alone. We need confirmation from our finance department and the relevant vendors.””

“Call them.””

“I already have.””

She tapped her radio.

“The catering company has paused final service authorization. The florist is holding additional installations. The entertainment contractor has also been notified.””

Darius stared at her.

“You've stopped everything?””

“Temporarily.””

He looked at the floral arch, the champagne glasses, and the rows of carefully arranged chairs.

For the first time, the luxury around him seemed to become a burden rather than a prize.

Ethan approached Nia and gently touched her elbow.

“Can we talk outside?””

“Not now.””

“Nia, please.””

She pulled away.

“Why are you acting like this? Marcus is the one causing the problem.””

Ethan glanced at me.

“Marcus signed the guarantee. You told me your father was covering the rest.””

“He was supposed to!””

“And Darius?””

Nia hesitated.

“He said he would help.””

“How much?””

“That's private.””

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“We're getting married today, Nia. I don't think our finances are private from each other anymore.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You're supposed to be on my side.””

“I am on your side. That's why I'm asking you to tell me the truth.””

Darius interrupted them.

“Ethan, this is a family matter.””

Ethan turned toward him.

“I'm marrying your daughter. That makes it my family matter, too.””

Darius looked as though he wanted to strike back, but the security officers remained nearby.

I watched the scene unfold without saying another word.

Then Elena approached me.

Her perfume was familiar, the same scent that had lingered on my shirts when we first married. She had spent twenty years beside me, through business setbacks, family illnesses, and nights when I came home exhausted and still helped Nia with her homework.

Now she stood before me with tears gathering in her eyes.

“Marcus, please. Whatever this document says, we can resolve it.””

I looked at her.

“Why did you tell me to finish paying and go home?””

She lowered her head.

“I was trying to protect Nia's day.””

“From what? The truth?””

“From embarrassment.””

I let out a slow breath.

“Elena, she embarrassed me in front of three hundred people. You watched her do it.””

“I know.””

“Did you think I wouldn't feel it?””

She reached for my hand.

I stepped back.

Her fingers closed around empty air.

“I made a mistake,” she whispered.

“No. You made a choice. Several of them.””

She wiped her cheek.

“Darius told me he had changed. He said he wanted to make up for the years he missed. Nia was so happy to have him back. I didn't want to destroy that.””

“Then why did you help them destroy me?””

She had no answer.

Across the room, Darius was arguing with a hotel finance representative who had just arrived.

“I signed that agreement under different circumstances,” he insisted.

The representative examined the papers.

“The signature is yours, Mr. Cole.””

“The circumstances have changed.””

“Then we will need documentation supporting that claim.””

Darius turned toward me.

His voice dropped.

“You're enjoying this.””

I looked at him for a long moment.

“No. I'm finally seeing you clearly.””

He stepped closer.

“You think you're the hero because you raised a child who isn't biologically yours?””

“No,” I said.

“I think I did what a father was supposed to do.””

His face reddened.

“You stole twenty-seven years from me.””

I almost laughed at the absurdity.

“I didn't stop you from calling her. I didn't move away without leaving an address. I didn't miss her birthdays.””

He opened his mouth.

I continued.

“You had twenty-seven years to be her father. I didn't steal a single day.””

For once, Darius had nothing to say.

Then the finance representative looked up from the agreement.

“Mr. Cole, there's one additional issue. This document lists the anticipated release of a separate financial asset as a condition of repayment.””

Darius went completely still.

The representative turned the page.

“And that asset is connected to a trust established in the name of Nia Cole.””

Nia's tears stopped.

“What trust?””

Darius looked at her.

“Nia, listen to me.””

She stepped away from him.

“What trust, Dad?””

He reached for her hand.

She pulled it back.

The ballroom fell silent again.

May you like

And I understood that the debt was only the beginning.

Because whatever Darius had planned, he had somehow tied my stepdaughter's future to it.
