Chapter 5: The Three Hours Nobody Explained
Evelyn had never heard about Ava disappearing.
She looked at her granddaughter.
“Baby, what is he talking about?””
Ava's fingers tightened around her backpack straps.
Darius smiled.
“Go ahead, Monique. Tell your little audience.””
Monique shook her head.
“Darius, don't.””
“Tell them how you left her alone.””
“I didn't leave her alone.””
“You were responsible for her!””
“I was at work!””
Darius laughed.
“Exactly.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Someone needs to explain what happened.””
Raymond raised a hand.
“Let's not turn this into another argument. We can listen without shouting.””
Darius leaned against the wall.
“Fine. I'll tell you.””
He looked directly at Evelyn.
“Three weeks ago, Ava disappeared. Nobody knew where she was for almost three hours. Monique was supposed to be watching her.””
Monique's face tightened.
“You know that's not what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked at Raymond.
“I had an evening shift. Ava was supposed to be with Darius.””
Evelyn turned toward her son.
“You told me you were home that night.””
“I was.””
Monique shook her head.
“No, you weren't.””
Darius's jaw tightened.
“Careful.””
Monique took a shaky breath.
“You left to meet your friends. You told Ava to stay in her room until you returned.””
Darius shrugged.
“She had everything she needed.””
“She was frightened because you had been shouting at her.””
“I wasn't shouting.””
“You were angry because she spilled juice on your paperwork.””
Evelyn remembered that night.
Ava had called her shortly before nine. She had asked whether Grandma was awake, then said she wanted to talk about school.
Evelyn had assumed the child was simply lonely.
She hadn't realized how much she was hiding.
Monique continued.
“When I got home, the house was quiet. I thought Ava was sleeping. Then I noticed the back door wasn't properly closed.””
Raymond asked, “What did you do?””
“I searched the house. I called Darius. He didn't answer.””
Darius rolled his eyes.
“My phone was on silent.””
“You were at a sports bar,” Monique replied.
“I found the receipt in your jacket.””
Evelyn looked at her son.
“Where was Ava?””
Monique's voice broke.
“She was at the bus stop two streets away.””
Ava began crying.
Evelyn immediately knelt beside her.
“Oh, baby.””
“I didn't go far,” Ava whispered.
“Why did you leave?””
The girl looked toward her father.
Darius folded his arms.
“Go ahead. Tell them.””
Ava swallowed.
“I wanted Grandma.””
Evelyn's heart seemed to stop.
“Why didn't you call me?””
“I didn't have my phone.””
Darius interrupted.
“She took it without permission.””
Ava shook her head.
“You took it away.””
“Because you wouldn't listen!””
“I wanted to tell Grandma I was scared.””
Evelyn pulled her granddaughter into her arms.
“Sweetheart, you never have to be ashamed of asking for help.””
Ava cried against her shoulder.
“I thought you would be mad.””
“Never.””
Monique wiped her face.
“I found her sitting at the bus stop with her backpack. She was cold. She kept asking whether she could stay with me.””
Raymond looked at Darius.
“And where were you?””
“Out.””
“While your daughter was missing?””
“I didn't know she was missing!””
“You didn't answer your wife's calls.””
“I don't have to answer every call!””
Raymond shook his head.
“That's not the point.””
Darius pushed away from the wall.
“The point is that everyone has decided I'm the villain. Nobody cares what it's like being a man who works all day, pays bills, and comes home to a child who doesn't respect him.””
Evelyn slowly stood.
“Respect isn't something you can force out of a frightened child.””
Darius pointed toward Ava.
“She knows how to manipulate people. Look at her!””
Ava hid behind Evelyn again.
Monique finally stepped forward.
“Stop calling her manipulative.””
Darius turned toward his wife.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.””
“I know what I saw.””
“What did you see?””
“I saw our daughter shaking when your car pulled into the driveway.””
He stared at her.
Monique continued.
“I saw her pretend to be asleep so you wouldn't ask her questions. I saw her hide food in her backpack because she didn't know when you would let her eat again.””
Darius's face darkened.
“That is a lie.””
Ava whispered, “It's not.””
Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.
She remembered finding crackers in Ava's backpack.
She remembered asking why the child carried so much food.
Ava had answered, “Just in case.””
At the time, Evelyn had thought it was a childhood habit.
Now the memory hurt.
Raymond opened his folder again.
“Monique, there's something else you need to tell them.””
Monique stared at him.
“I know.””
Darius looked between them.
“What now?””
Monique took a shaky breath.
“After I found Ava at the bus stop, I called my sister.””
Darius scoffed.
“Of course you did.””
“I asked her to let Ava stay with her for a few nights.””
“You were planning to take my daughter?””
“I was trying to get her somewhere safe.””
“And what did your sister say?””
“She said yes.””
Darius laughed.
“Then why is Ava still here?””
Monique looked toward the floor.
“Because you found out.””
The room became painfully quiet.
Evelyn remembered Monique arriving at her house the following morning, asking strange questions about whether Evelyn could help with school pickups.
She had never understood why Monique seemed so nervous.
Now she did.
Raymond closed the folder.
“That's enough. We have the recording, the messages, and the accounts of what happened. The next step is making sure the child is safe.””
Darius moved toward him.
“You're not taking her.””
Raymond held his ground.
“I'm not here to fight you.””
“Then get out!””
Evelyn took Ava's backpack.
“Come on, sweetheart.””
But Ava didn't move.
She was staring at Monique.
“Mom?””
Monique knelt.
“Yes, baby?””
“Are you coming with us?””
Monique's eyes filled again.
She reached for Ava's hands.
“I want to.””
Darius stepped forward.
“No, you're not.””
Monique stood.
“Darius, I'm going with my daughter.””
“You walk out that door, don't bother coming back.””
Monique's lips trembled.
Then she did something Evelyn hadn't expected.
She took off her wedding ring.
She placed it carefully on the coffee table.
“I can't keep pretending this is normal.””
Darius stared at the ring.
“You're making a huge mistake.””
Monique didn't answer.
Raymond opened the front door.
Cold air swept into the hallway.
Evelyn took Ava's hand.
But before they could step outside, Darius spoke again.
“Mom, you should ask Monique what she told Ava about you.””
Evelyn stopped.
Monique froze.
Darius smiled.
“Go on, sweetheart. Tell her why Ava thought Grandma wouldn't believe her.””
Evelyn slowly turned.
“Monique?””
May you like
Her daughter-in-law looked down.
And for the first time that night, Evelyn wasn't sure whether the next truth would bring the family closer to safety—or break what remained of it.
