Chapter 3: The Name on His Screen

Darius stared at the incoming call.

His father had been dead for seven years.

Or at least, that was what Darius had told everyone in the family.

The number belonged to a man named Raymond, his father's younger brother.

Uncle Raymond.

The man who had helped Evelyn raise Darius after his father left.

The man who had been waiting outside the gate.

Darius picked up the phone.

“What do you want?””

Raymond's voice came through, calm and unmistakable.

“Open the door.””

Darius glanced toward Evelyn.

“You're involved in this?””

“I received a message from your mother.””

“That's between me and my mother.””

“No, Darius. It stopped being between you and your mother when you put your hands on a child.””

Darius's nostrils flared.

“You don't know what happened.””

“I know enough to come over.””

“You're not coming into my house.””

Raymond paused.

Then he said, “Your mother isn't asking permission anymore.””

Darius ended the call.

He tossed his phone onto the table.

Monique stared at him.

“That was Uncle Raymond?””

“Stay out of it.””

“He came because Evelyn asked him?””

Darius walked toward the entrance.

“Everybody suddenly wants to be a hero.””

Evelyn adjusted the cardigan around Ava's shoulders.

“Raymond didn't need to be a hero. He only needed to show up.””

Darius spun around.

“You always do this!””

“Do what?””

“Make me look like some monster in front of everybody!””

Evelyn's eyes glistened.

“I didn't make you do anything.””

He pointed at the broken phone.

“You recorded me!””

“Yes.””

“You planned this!””

“I planned to protect Ava.””

Darius let out a sharp laugh.

“Protect her from her own father?””

Evelyn looked down at the little girl.

“Especially when her father frightens her.””

Ava slowly raised her face.

“Daddy?””

Darius looked at her.

“What?””

“Are you angry because I told Grandma?””

His expression shifted.

For a brief moment, he seemed unable to find an answer.

Then he walked toward her.

“You shouldn't be telling family business to other people.””

Ava's eyes filled with tears.

“But I was scared.””

“You don't have anything to be scared of.””

She shook her head.

“You said you would make me sorry.””

Darius looked away.

Evelyn pulled Ava closer.

“Don't ask her to pretend she didn't hear what you said.””

“I was angry!””

“And she was frightened.””

“I didn't mean it!””

Ava whispered, “You said it twice.””

Nobody spoke.

Monique turned her face toward the window.

Darius rubbed his forehead.

“Everybody makes mistakes.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“A mistake is forgetting someone's birthday. A mistake is breaking a glass. You made a choice to frighten your own child.””

He slammed his palm against the coffee table.

“Enough!””

Ava jumped.

Evelyn immediately stood up.

Her legs shook, and she held the armrest for balance.

But she positioned herself in front of Ava again.

“Don't you raise your voice at her.””

Darius looked at his mother.

“You can barely stand without holding furniture.””

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“My legs may be old, son. My judgment isn't.””

Outside, Raymond knocked again.

“Evelyn! I'm here!””

Darius walked toward the door.

He opened the lock but kept one hand against the handle.

“Listen,” he said, looking at his mother.

“If you let him inside, I swear this family will never be the same.””

Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.

“Darius, this family hasn't been the same for a long time.””

He pulled the door open.

Raymond stood on the porch wearing a dark winter coat. His silver hair was damp from the cold Cleveland evening.

He was sixty-five, broad-shouldered, and carried a small leather folder beneath one arm.

His eyes went immediately to Evelyn.

Then to Ava.

Then to the broken phone on the floor.

“What happened?””

Darius stepped into his path.

“You're not coming in.””

Raymond didn't move.

“I came because your mother asked me to.””

“She doesn't need you.””

“Apparently, she does.””

Darius lowered his voice.

“Go home, Uncle.””

Raymond looked past him.

“Evelyn, do you want me to come inside?””

“Yes,” she answered.

Darius's jaw tightened.

Raymond stepped across the threshold.

He didn't touch Darius or push past him.

He simply walked into the living room and stopped beside Evelyn's chair.

“Are you hurt?””

“My hip,” Evelyn replied.

“But I'll manage.””

Raymond looked at Ava.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

Ava recognized him.

“Uncle Raymond?””

“That's right.””

He crouched slightly so he wouldn't tower over her.

“Would you like to come stand beside me?””

Ava looked at her grandmother.

Evelyn nodded.

The girl slowly moved away from the armchair, still holding Evelyn's hand.

Raymond placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

“Your grandma sent me something important.””

Darius crossed his arms.

“You're not taking my daughter anywhere.””

Raymond looked at him.

“Nobody is asking you to make a scene.””

“Then leave.””

“I'll leave when Evelyn and Ava are safe.””

Darius laughed.

“You think you can walk into my house and tell me what to do?””

Raymond opened his leather folder.

“No. I think you need to understand what happens next.””

He removed a printed sheet of paper.

Evelyn recognized it immediately.

It was the message she had sent before Darius destroyed her phone.

The recording had been successfully delivered.

Raymond placed the page on the coffee table.

Darius glanced down.

His face tightened as he saw the attachment details.

Then Raymond reached into the folder again.

“There is something else your mother told me.””

Darius shook his head.

“I'm done listening.””

Raymond ignored him.

“Evelyn didn't just send me that recording tonight.””

Darius turned slowly.

“What?””

“She asked me to keep copies of earlier messages too.””

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

Raymond continued.

“She told me about the things Ava had been saying. The calls she made when she was frightened. The messages you sent when you thought nobody else would see them.””

Darius stared at his mother.

“You went through my messages?””

“I didn't need to,” Evelyn said.

“Ava showed me what you sent her.””

Monique suddenly looked up.

“What messages?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Raymond turned toward her.

“Monique, you should hear this too.””

Darius stepped forward.

“Don't you dare.””

Raymond placed his hand on the folder.

“There's a message here that changes what we thought was happening in this house.””

Evelyn's fingers tightened around Ava's hand.

She had hoped that the recording alone would be enough.

But there was something she hadn't told Darius.

Something Ava had whispered to her three nights earlier, while sleeping on her couch with the bedroom light on.

Raymond looked directly at Monique.

“Do you know why Ava started asking your mother-in-law to let her stay overnight?””

Monique's face went pale.

Darius turned toward his wife.

“Don't answer him.””

Raymond opened the folder.

And Monique recognized the first sentence on the printed page.

It was written in her own words.
