Chapter 9: The Father Whose Name Was Missing

I read the birth record three times.

Each time, the name remained the same.

*BIOLOGICAL FATHER: DANIEL MERCER.*

I felt the room tilt.

“No,” I whispered.

My father stood so abruptly that his chair scraped backward across the floor.

“That's impossible.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Brianna stared at the screen, her face completely blank.

Ethan looked as though he had forgotten how to breathe.

I turned toward Robert.

“Tell me this is a mistake.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

“Dad?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Amara, I can explain.””

I shook my head.

“No. You don't get to say that anymore. Not after tonight. Not after everything you've hidden from me.””

He gripped the edge of the desk.

“I raised you.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

“You are my daughter.””

“Then why isn't your name on my birth record?””

He looked at the document.

Then at Vanessa.

And I saw the truth before he spoke.

He had known.

Perhaps not every detail. Perhaps not the identity of every person who had manipulated the trust or concealed the circumstances of my mother's death.

But he had known enough to understand that the document was not a surprise.

“Was my mother having an affair?”” I asked.

Robert closed his eyes.

“No.””

“Then why is Daniel's name there?””

He lowered himself into the chair.

“Your mother and I were separated when she became pregnant.””

I stared at him.

“You told me you were married when I was born.””

“We were legally married. But we had been living apart for several months.””

“Why?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“Because I was afraid of becoming a father. I had just lost my job, and your mother was struggling with the pregnancy. We argued constantly. I moved into my brother's apartment.””

I waited.

He continued.

“Your mother met Daniel through work. He was helping her with a legal dispute involving the boutique where she worked. They became close.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“My father never told me he had a child with someone else.””

Robert looked at him.

“I don't know what Daniel told you.””

“He told me he had made a mistake involving a family estate. He never mentioned Amara.””

“Because your mother asked him not to.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

Robert looked at me.

“Because she wanted you to grow up with a father who would love you. She believed I could become that man if I stopped running away.””

I stared at him.

“You knew I might not be your biological daughter, and you raised me without telling me?””

“I knew Daniel might be your biological father. The records were complicated. Your mother never wanted a test.””

“Did you ever wonder?””

“Every day.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

His voice broke.

“Because by the time I understood what it meant, I loved you more than I feared the truth.””

I wanted to believe that answer.

But the man sitting before me had spent nine years concealing the truth about my mother's final night. He had signed documents that allowed money to be taken from her trust. He had watched Vanessa mistreat me and called his silence peace.

Love was not enough to erase those choices.

I turned toward Ethan.

“Did you know Daniel might be my biological father?””

“No.””

“Did you know there was a possibility we were related?””

His face went pale.

“No, Amara. I swear to you, I never knew.””

I wanted to believe him, too.

But the birth record had raised a question I couldn't ignore.

If Daniel was my biological father, what did that make Ethan?

My fiancé.

The son of the man whose name appeared on my birth certificate.

I took a step backward.

“Are we related?””

Ethan shook his head immediately.

“No. My father had me with my mother years before he met yours. He and my mother divorced long before any of this happened.””

“But if Daniel was my father—”

“We need a proper DNA test to establish the biological relationships. We can't assume anything from this document alone.””

His voice was careful, measured, and frightened.

I looked at the birth record again.

There was something strange about it.

The document bore an official seal, but the date of registration was several months after my birth. A handwritten note appeared near the bottom.

Amended by court order.

I pointed at it.

“Why was this amended?””

Robert leaned forward.

“I don't know.””

“You said the records were complicated.””

“Because your mother told me the original paperwork had been filed incorrectly. She said Daniel's name had been entered by mistake and that a court corrected it.””

“Then why does this document say he was my biological father?””

My father stared at the screen.

“I've never seen that version.””

Ethan pulled the document closer.

“There's a case number here.””

He typed it into his laptop.

The search returned an archived court entry, but the details were restricted. A second file appeared beneath it: a scanned order from a family court, dated six months after my birth.

Ethan opened it.

The order stated that the original birth registration had been amended following a paternity dispute.

A second page contained a handwritten declaration.

I leaned toward the screen.

The signature at the bottom belonged to my mother.

The statement read:

I confirm that Daniel Mercer is not the biological father of my child. The original entry was made in error. Robert Hayes is the child's biological father, and I request that the record be corrected accordingly.

I stared at the words.

Robert was my biological father after all.

The room seemed to release a breath.

But I couldn't understand why Daniel's name had been placed on the record in the first place, or why someone had sent me a version that contradicted the court order.

Ethan scrolled down.

“There's another page.””

It was a receipt showing that a certified copy of the original, uncorrected registration had been requested three weeks earlier.

The requester was listed as Daniel Mercer.

But Daniel had been dead for six years.

Brianna moved closer.

“Someone used his account.””

Ethan nodded.

“Or someone had access to it.””

Vanessa's eyes darted toward the door.

I noticed.

“Who requested this?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Vanessa.””

“I said I don't know!””

Brianna stared at her mother.

“You told me Daniel was dead before he could expose us.””

Vanessa snapped toward her.

“Be quiet!””

“Why? What did you do with his records?””

“Nothing!””

“Then why did you tell me to destroy the dress?””

The question stopped everyone.

I looked at Brianna.

“What does my wedding dress have to do with this?””

She swallowed.

“Vanessa told me Ethan was going to bring the original trust documents to the wedding. She said there was something sewn into your dress that could prove he had been working with Daniel.””

I stared at the ruined gown in the hallway.

“Something sewn into my dress?””

Brianna nodded.

“I didn't believe her at first. But she said your mother had hidden something in the embroidery.””

My heart began to pound.

I thought about the crystals I had sewn by hand. The tiny pockets of fabric beneath the bodice. The layers of silk and lining.

My mother had taught me how to sew.

Could she have hidden something inside the gown I had created in her memory?

Vanessa shook her head.

“She was lying. There was nothing in that dress.””

Brianna looked at her.

“Then why did you insist I cut the bodice first?””

Vanessa went silent.

I turned toward the bridal room.

The dress was still hanging beneath the chandelier, its corset split open, its embroidered flowers soaked in pink paint.

For the first time that night, I saw the destruction differently.

Brianna had not simply attacked the dress because she was jealous.

Someone had given her a reason to believe the dress contained something valuable.

And Vanessa had wanted that thing destroyed.

I hurried down the hallway.

“Amara!”” Ethan called.

I didn't stop.

I knelt beside the mannequin and examined the torn bodice.

Pink paint had dried across the silk. The scissors had cut through the outer fabric, but several layers of lining remained intact.

I ran my fingers along the inside seam.

There.

A small section felt thicker than the rest.

I took a pair of sewing scissors from the vanity and carefully opened the seam.

Something slid out.

A tiny plastic sleeve.

Inside it was a memory card and a folded piece of paper.

My hands trembled as I unfolded the note.

My mother's handwriting.

Amara, I know you will make your own wedding dress. If you ever find this, it means someone has tried to take away the future I wanted for you.

Tears blurred the words.

The truth is not in the money. The truth is in the recording. Ask Daniel why he agreed to change the birth record, and ask Robert why he never told you about the day you were born.

I stared at the note.

The birth record had been corrected by court order. Robert was listed as my biological father. Yet my mother had deliberately hidden a recording in the dress she knew I would one day make.

Why?

Ethan brought his laptop into the room.

“Let's see what's on the card.””

He inserted it.

One video file appeared.

The date was nine years old.

My mother was sitting at a table in our old kitchen. She looked tired, but she was smiling. Daniel Mercer sat opposite her, his hands folded over a thick envelope.

My mother spoke first.

“Are you certain this will protect Amara?””

Daniel nodded.

“If the records are corrected, Robert remains her legal and biological father. My name will be removed from the registration.””

“And the trust?””

“I'll restore the funds that were transferred without authorization.””

My mother's expression hardened.

“You will do more than restore the money. You will provide the original transaction records to an independent attorney.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Vanessa won't allow that.””

“Then she will have to answer for what she did.””

Daniel looked down at the envelope.

“There's something else you should know.””

My mother leaned forward.

“What?””

He opened the envelope and removed a photograph.

It showed a young Vanessa standing beside a man I had never seen before.

My mother stared at the photograph.

Then she whispered, “No. That's impossible.””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Vanessa wasn't working alone.””

The video ended.

I looked at Ethan.

“Who is that man?””

He enlarged the photograph.

The man's face became clearer.

Ethan went completely still.

“What?”” I asked.

He turned the laptop toward me.

“That's my uncle.””

I stared at the screen.

“Your uncle?””

“My father's younger brother. Michael Mercer.””

Ethan swallowed.

“My family told me he disappeared years ago after being accused of fraud. Nobody ever found him.””

Behind us, my father made a strangled sound.

Vanessa began moving toward the door.

Brianna blocked her.

“Where are you going?””

Vanessa looked at her daughter with a terrible calm.

“Somewhere you can't follow me.””

Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a second phone.

She pressed one button.

“Michael,” she whispered, “they found the recording.””

A man's voice answered.

“Then we have a problem.””

Vanessa stared at me.

May you like

“No,” she said softly.

“We have a wedding.””
