Chapter 8: My Mother's Voice—and My Fiancé's Name

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood the recording.

I stared at the black phone in Vanessa's hand.

Ethan's name had come from my mother's lips nine years before I met him.

It made no sense.

He was standing beside me, as stunned as I was.

“Play it again,” I whispered.

Vanessa's smile returned.

“Why? Didn't you hear her?””

“Play it again!””

She tapped the screen.

My mother's voice filled the study once more.

“But there's one person you must never trust with the truth.””

A pause.

“Ethan.””

The recording ended.

I turned toward my fiancé.

He looked as though someone had struck him.

“Amara, I swear I don't know what that means.””

I wanted to believe him.

But I had already spent the evening discovering that people I loved could lie with straight faces.

My father had concealed the circumstances of my mother's death. Vanessa had stolen from my inheritance. Brianna had destroyed my wedding dress while pretending to be innocent.

And now my dead mother had named the man I intended to marry.

“Who are you?”” I whispered.

Ethan took a step toward me.

“I'm the man who loves you.””

“That's not an answer.””

“I know.””

“Did you know my mother?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough to make my stomach turn.

“Ethan.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The room seemed to shrink around me.

“How?””

He looked at Vanessa, who was watching him with the satisfaction of someone who had finally revealed her strongest card.

“Not the way you're thinking,” he said.

“Then explain it.””

Ethan took a breath.

“My father was Daniel Mercer.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at the documents scattered across the desk.

Northbridge Consulting.

The suspicious transfers.

The attorney who had handled my mother's estate.

Daniel Mercer.

I looked back at Ethan.

“Your father was the man who stole my inheritance?””

“He was the attorney who handled the estate,” Ethan replied.

“I didn't know about the transfers until three weeks ago.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Convenient.””

Ethan ignored her.

“My father died six years ago. I inherited his personal files, including some old case records. I found your mother's name while going through them.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know whether the records were accurate. And because I found something that suggested my father had been involved in a financial scheme with Vanessa.””

My father lowered himself into the chair.

“Your father knew?””

Ethan shook his head.

“I don't know how much he knew. There were payments to Northbridge, but some of the records were missing. I thought he might have been helping Vanessa move the money.””

“Then why did you propose to me?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at me with desperate honesty.

“Because I fell in love with you before I knew any of this.””

I shook my head.

“You met Brianna before you met me. You knew about the trust before you proposed. And now you're telling me your father was connected to the woman who may have contributed to my mother's death.””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like everyone knew something about my life except me!””

My voice echoed through the study.

Ethan didn't argue.

“I should have told you when I found the records,” he said.

“I thought I could prove what happened before I brought you into it. I was wrong.””

Vanessa raised the phone.

“Your mother knew the truth about his father. That's why she recorded this message.””

I turned toward her.

“Where did you get the recording?””

She hesitated.

“From a box in your father's study.””

“You mean this box?””

“No. Another one.””

My father looked up sharply.

“Where?””

Vanessa's expression changed.

For the first time, she seemed to realize that she had said too much.

Brianna stepped forward.

“Mom, where did you get it?””

Vanessa gripped the phone.

“Your grandmother gave it to me.””

I frowned.

“My grandmother died before I was born.””

“Your father's mother,” Vanessa snapped.

“She kept documents from your mother's estate. She believed your mother had caused trouble for Daniel Mercer and wanted to protect the family.””

Ethan stared at her.

“My grandmother was dead by the time my father became involved in the estate.””

Vanessa's eyes widened slightly.

Then Ethan continued.

“My father was already handling the trust before my grandmother died. If she gave you this recording, why did you wait nine years to use it?””

Vanessa said nothing.

I stepped toward her.

“Because it isn't the full recording, is it?””

Her grip tightened.

“Don't be ridiculous.””

“You've spent all night showing us edited footage, threatening messages, and documents that conveniently support your version of events. Why should I believe this recording is any different?””

Ethan looked at me.

Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out another flash drive.

“I think I know why.””

He connected it to the laptop on my father's desk.

A folder appeared on the screen.

Inside were several audio files, each bearing a date from the final month of my mother's life.

Vanessa rushed forward.

“Turn that off!””

Ethan stepped between her and the computer.

“No.””

He opened the first file.

A man's voice filled the room.

It was older, measured, and unfamiliar.

“Mrs. Hayes, I need you to understand that the transfer was unauthorized. Your husband signed the witness statement, but the beneficiary change was not valid.””

My father stared at the screen.

“That's Daniel.””

Ethan nodded.

The recording continued.

My mother's voice followed.

“Then why is the money gone?””

Daniel replied, “Because the funds were transferred through an account controlled by Vanessa. I'm trying to recover them before this becomes a criminal matter.””

My mother's breathing sounded shallow.

“And if I report it?””

A long pause.

“Then everyone involved will be investigated.””

The file ended.

I stared at Ethan.

“You had this recording?””

“I found it three weeks ago. I sent it to my attorney for verification.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because I wanted to understand why my father had kept it.””

Vanessa laughed sharply.

“Your father kept it because he was protecting himself!””

Ethan turned toward her.

“Maybe. But the recording doesn't prove he knew what happened to your medication. It proves he knew about the financial transfers.””

My father leaned forward.

“Play the next one.””

Ethan opened another file.

This time, the recording began with the sound of a door closing.

My mother's voice was clearer.

“Vanessa, I want the money returned.””

Vanessa answered.

“You don't understand what Robert owes me.””

“He owes you nothing from my daughter's trust.””

“I gave up everything to be part of this family.””

“You married Robert. You didn't purchase my daughter.””

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then Vanessa's voice rose.

“If you expose me, I'll lose everything.””

My mother replied quietly.

“Then you should have thought about that before you stole from Amara.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone pale.

“You recorded my mother?”” I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Daniel did. He was trying to protect himself.””

“Then why do you have the files?””

She looked toward the door.

Brianna moved to block it.

“Answer her.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“Because Daniel threatened me! He said if I didn't cooperate, he'd give the recordings to the police. I paid him to keep quiet.””

“How much?”” Ethan asked.

She didn't answer.

“How much, Vanessa?””

“More than I had.””

Ethan looked at the ledger.

“The final payment was one hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I wanted it to end.””

I felt a cold anger rise inside me.

“So you kept stealing from my trust to pay the man who helped you steal from it?””

“I was trying to prevent a scandal!””

“You were trying to prevent consequences.””

Vanessa looked at me with sudden hatred.

“You think you're better than me because your mother left you money and a few sentimental letters? You have no idea what it means to spend your life being treated as second-best.””

I stared at her.

“You destroyed my life because you couldn't stand the fact that my mother loved me?””

“No!””

Her scream startled everyone.

Then she whispered, “Your mother made it impossible for anyone else to matter.””

For the first time, I understood the depth of her resentment.

My mother had not merely been a woman Vanessa disliked.

She had been a reminder of everything Vanessa believed she could never possess: Robert's first love, the family's history, and a daughter who had been loved before Vanessa arrived.

And Vanessa had spent years trying to erase that history.

But the recording still bothered me.

My mother had named Ethan.

There had to be a reason.

I turned toward him.

“What did your father tell you about my mother?””

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“Before he died, he told me that he had made a terrible mistake involving a family estate. He said he had tried to correct it, but someone had threatened his daughter.””

I stared at him.

“His daughter?””

“My half-sister. She lived with him for a while after my parents divorced.””

Vanessa suddenly looked up.

“Your father had another daughter?””

Ethan nodded.

“She died in a car accident when she was twenty-one. My father never recovered.””

He paused.

“He blamed himself because he had spent years hiding a secret from her. He believed that if he had told the truth sooner, she might have made different choices.””

My chest tightened.

“What secret?””

Ethan looked at the old documents.

“I don't know. He never told me.””

Brianna stepped forward.

“Maybe your mother knew.””

Ethan turned toward her.

“Why do you say that?””

“Because the recording wasn't meant for Vanessa.””

She pointed at the phone.

“Look at the file information.””

Ethan took the device from Vanessa and examined the screen.

The recording had been saved under a name.

*AMARA_FINAL_MESSAGE_2.*

There was another file beneath it.

*AMARA_FINAL_MESSAGE_1.*

My breath caught.

“Play it.””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he pressed the screen.

My mother's voice emerged again, weaker than before.

“Amara, if you ever hear this, it means Daniel has failed to keep his promise.””

A pause.

“I need you to understand that Ethan is not responsible for his father's actions. But he may be the only person who can help you uncover the truth.””

I looked at Ethan.

His eyes filled with tears.

My mother continued.

“There's a document Daniel kept from me. It concerns the day you were born. If Vanessa ever discovers it, she will do anything to destroy it.””

The recording crackled.

Then came her final words.

“Amara, your father isn't the only person who has been lying to you about your past.””

The file ended.

I stood motionless.

The day I was born?

What could possibly connect my birth to the stolen trust, my mother's death, and Ethan's family?

Before anyone could speak, Brianna reached for the laptop.

“There,” she whispered.

A new email had arrived.

It was from Daniel Mercer's old account.

The subject line read:

*THE ORIGINAL BIRTH RECORD — AMARA HAYES.*

The message contained one sentence.

If you want to know why your mother chose you, look at the name listed under biological father.

I opened the attachment.

May you like

And watched the name appear on the screen.

Robert Hayes was not listed.
