Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn't Hers
Robert asked everyone to step away from the reception table.
He wanted enough space to examine the documents without guests leaning over their shoulders.
Devon protested immediately.
“This is getting out of control.””
Robert opened his briefcase.
“Then you should have disclosed the additional loan when I asked about the business finances.””
Devon pointed toward the garage.
“I have customers waiting.””
Margaret looked at him.
“Your customers can wait.””
Celeste picked up her handbag.
“I need to leave.””
Devon turned toward her.
“Stay.””
“Why?””
“Because we need to sort this out.””
Celeste laughed bitterly.
“You've been telling everyone a different story for months. I'm not staying here to be blamed for all of it.””
She walked toward the entrance.
Devon started after her.
But Robert's voice stopped him.
“Mr. Carter, if you leave before we establish what happened with the loan documents, you may make this situation considerably more difficult.””
Devon turned around.
“What exactly are you accusing me of?””
“Nothing. I'm asking you to explain the paperwork.””
Robert placed the personal guarantee on the table.
The document contained the loan amount, the business address, and the signatures of the people listed as responsible parties.
Renee leaned closer.
Her name appeared beneath Devon's.
She recognized the printed letters.
But the signature was wrong.
Not slightly wrong.
Completely wrong.
Her signature usually began with a large curved R. She connected the letters in Renee and always finished Carter with a long upward stroke.
The signature on the guarantee looked like someone had copied her name from an old document.
“That's not mine,” she said.
Robert nodded.
“I suspected as much.””
Devon shifted his weight.
“Maybe you signed it and forgot.””
Renee looked at him.
“I didn't.””
“You sign so many documents.””
“Not loan guarantees.””
“Renee, you don't understand how business financing works.””
She stared at him.
“I understand that I didn't borrow seventy-two thousand dollars.””
Robert raised one hand.
“Let's keep this factual. I will request the original application and all supporting authorization records.””
Renee looked at the attorney.
“Can the lender tell us who submitted it?””
“They should be able to identify the application channel, the documents provided, and the verification process. Whether they can immediately disclose every detail is another matter.””
Devon crossed his arms.
“This is a waste of time.””
Margaret turned toward him.
“Then show us your copy.””
Devon frowned.
“What?””
“The loan documents. If everything is legitimate, show us.””
“I don't have them here.””
“Where are they?””
“At home.””
Renee looked at him.
“You told me there was no additional loan.””
Devon rubbed his forehead.
“I didn't want you worrying.””
“You didn't want me knowing.””
He didn't respond.
Robert took out his phone and made a brief call.
He explained that he was requesting an immediate copy of the lender's original records and asked that any pending changes to the business ownership be placed under review.
After ending the call, he looked at Renee.
“There is something else you should understand. Until the disputed guarantee is investigated, do not acknowledge the debt as yours or sign any replacement paperwork.””
Renee nodded.
“I won't.””
Devon laughed.
“You're acting as if I'm some criminal.””
Margaret's face hardened.
“No one has called you that. But you need to explain what you've done.””
Devon turned away.
Renee watched him.
For years, she had been the person who defended him whenever someone questioned his decisions.
When his business idea seemed unrealistic, she encouraged him.
When his first equipment order was delayed, she helped him negotiate with the supplier.
When he felt embarrassed about borrowing money, she told him there was nothing wrong with building something slowly.
She had believed in him when he didn't believe in himself.
Now he was treating her trust as though it were an unlimited source of money.
Her phone rang.
The number belonged to Daniel Brooks.
She answered.
“Hello?””
“Mrs. Carter? My name is Daniel Brooks. I'm a loan compliance officer with Buckeye Commercial Finance.””
“Yes.””
“I'm calling about a loan application submitted in connection with Devon's Auto Repair.””
Renee looked toward Robert.
He nodded for her to continue.
Daniel spoke carefully.
“We received a request to add you as a personal guarantor. The application included an identification document and an electronic authorization bearing your name.””
Renee felt her stomach tighten.
“I did not authorize that.””
There was a pause.
“That's what I needed to clarify. We received a notification that the signature may be disputed.””
“Who submitted the application?””
“The primary applicant was Devon Carter.””
Renee closed her eyes.
“Did he submit my identification?””
“I can confirm that identification material was included. I cannot discuss the full verification record until our investigation is complete.””
“Was the loan already approved?””
“The funds were released to the business account.””
Renee looked at Devon.
He was staring at her phone.
“Where did the money go?”” she asked.
Daniel paused.
“According to the initial disbursement records, the funds were distributed among several business-related payments and one separate transfer.””
Renee's fingers tightened around the phone.
“What separate transfer?””
“I can provide the transaction details through the formal investigation process.””
“Please tell me whether it went to the business account.””
“It did not.””
Renee felt a chill run through her.
“Then where did it go?””
Daniel hesitated.
“An account registered to a third-party recipient.””
Renee slowly looked toward Celeste.
Celeste had stopped near the entrance.
Her face had gone pale.
Devon immediately stepped forward.
“End the call, Renee.””
She turned away from him.
“I'm speaking to the bank.””
Daniel continued.
“Mrs. Carter, there is another issue. The account receiving that transfer was associated with a property rental payment.””
Renee looked at Celeste.
The apartment.
Four months.
The late nights.
The money.
Everything was beginning to connect.
“Was the payment for an apartment?”” Renee asked.
Daniel paused.
“Yes. The transaction description references a residential lease.””
Renee lowered her phone.
Devon grabbed the edge of the table.
“That's enough.””
Robert stepped between them.
“Do not touch her or the documents.””
Devon looked furious.
“You're making me look like a thief in front of everyone!””
Margaret shook her head.
“No, son. Your decisions are doing that.””
Celeste suddenly spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She walked slowly back to the table.
“Devon told me he paid the apartment deposit with his own money.””
Devon glared at her.
“Celeste, stop.””
She ignored him.
“He said the loan was only for equipment. He told me the apartment was temporary because he needed somewhere close to the shop.””
Renee looked at her.
“Did you know he used my money?””
Celeste shook her head.
“No.””
“Did you know he used my name on the loan?””
“No.””
“Did you know he was trying to transfer my ownership to you?””
Celeste hesitated.
Then she whispered, “I knew about the transfer.””
Renee stared at her.
Celeste looked down.
“He told me you had agreed to it.””
Renee slowly shook her head.
“You keep saying that.””
“I believed him.””
“You believed him because it benefited you.””
Celeste had no answer.
Devon suddenly turned toward her.
“You wanted this business as much as I did!””
Celeste's eyes widened.
“I wanted a partnership. I didn't ask you to use your wife's identity.””
“You knew I was handling everything!””
“And you told me everything was legal!””
Robert raised his hand.
“Both of you need to stop. These statements may be relevant to the investigation.””
Renee sank into the chair again.
Her back hurt.
Her feet were swollen.
The baby moved beneath her hand.
She looked at the cupcakes, still untouched beneath the blue icing decorations.
She had imagined Devon standing beside her, smiling as guests congratulated them.
She had imagined them taking a photograph together.
She had imagined bringing their baby to the shop one day and telling the child how hard their parents had worked to build it.
Now the same table held evidence of betrayal.
Margaret approached and placed a hand on Renee's shoulder.
“Sweetheart, let's get you somewhere comfortable.””
Renee nodded.
But before she could stand, Robert's phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice came through loudly enough for Renee to hear.
Robert listened without speaking.
Then his expression changed.
“Are you certain?””
Another pause.
“Yes. I understand.””
He ended the call and looked at Devon.
“Mr. Carter, the lender has located the original authorization file.””
Devon went completely still.
Robert turned toward Renee.
“The electronic signature was submitted from a device registered to the business.””
Renee looked at Devon.
He swallowed.
Robert continued.
“And the verification recording contains a voice claiming to be Mrs. Carter.””
Renee's heart began racing.
“What?””
Robert nodded.
“The lender has agreed to preserve the recording for the investigation.””
Devon shook his head.
“That's impossible.””
Renee stood slowly.
“Who was pretending to be me?””
Robert looked down at the report.
Then he read the name attached to the verification session.
“According to the device registration, the person who completed the authorization was…”
He stopped.
His eyes moved from Devon to Celeste.
And Celeste suddenly whispered:
“Devon, you told me that recording had been deleted.””
Renee's face went white.
Because now she understood something far worse than an affair.
Someone had not merely taken her money.
May you like
Someone had deliberately used her identity.
And the person standing closest to her husband might have been involved from the very beginning.
