Chapter 3: The Papers Beside the Cupcakes
Renee stared at the envelope.
For a moment, the celebration seemed to disappear around her.
The balloons.
The music.
The customers.
Even the smell of fresh coffee coming from the reception table.
All she could see were those three words.
Property Transfer Agreement.
She looked at Devon.
“What is that?””
Devon moved quickly toward the table.
“It's business paperwork.””
Celeste placed her palm over the envelope.
“It's not just business paperwork.””
“Celeste, give it to me.””
“No.””
Her voice was calm, but her fingers held the envelope firmly.
Renee looked between them.
“What property?””
Devon rubbed his forehead.
“Renee, this is complicated.””
“Then explain it.””
“Not here.””
“I'm tired of hearing that.””
Renee pulled out the chair nearest the reception table and sat down carefully. Her lower back was aching, and the baby had been moving restlessly since she arrived.
She placed both hands on her belly.
“I am eight months pregnant, Devon. I worked a full shift today. I came here because I wanted to celebrate something we built together. I am not leaving until I know what's happening.””
A woman standing near the entrance whispered to her husband.
Paula pretended to rearrange the napkins.
Celeste finally opened the envelope.
Inside were several printed pages.
She removed the first sheet and placed it on the table.
“Devon and I have been discussing the future of this business,” she said.
Renee looked at the document.
At the top was the name of the company.
Below it were several paragraphs of legal language.
She recognized the address.
It was the same property Devon had spent months telling her they would eventually own together.
Renee looked up.
“Why is my name on this?””
Devon froze.
Celeste's expression changed.
“You recognize it?””
Renee picked up the paper.
Her name appeared near the bottom of the first page.
*RENEE CARTER.*
She read the line twice.
Then she looked at Devon.
“Why does this say I'm transferring my interest in the property?””
Devon stepped closer.
“It's just a preliminary document.””
“Why does it have my name?””
“Because you helped with the initial arrangements.””
Renee's eyebrows drew together.
“That's not an answer.””
Celeste crossed her arms.
“The business needed to be reorganized. Devon explained that you had agreed to step away from the financial side.””
Renee looked at her husband.
“Agreed?””
Devon remained silent.
Renee turned another page.
There was a section showing the proposed ownership arrangement.
Celeste's name appeared beside Devon's.
Renee's name appeared under a heading marked Outgoing Interest Holder.
Her hands began to shake.
“You were transferring my share?””
Devon lowered his voice.
“I was trying to protect the business.””
“From what?””
“From complications.””
Renee looked at him.
“What complications?””
He glanced at her stomach.
Then away.
“Your maternity leave. Your reduced hours. The fact that you won't be able to help as much after the baby arrives.””
Renee stared at him.
For a moment, the room seemed to tilt.
“So because I'm having your child, you decided I shouldn't have a place in the business?””
“That's not what I said.””
“Then what did you say?””
Devon looked frustrated.
“Renee, I need someone who can be present every day. Celeste understands the business side. She's available.””
Renee glanced at the paper.
“And I'm not?””
“You're going to have a baby.””
She let out a quiet breath.
“Yes, Devon. Our baby.””
Celeste shifted uncomfortably.
“Maybe this conversation should happen somewhere private.””
Renee turned toward her.
“You've been making decisions about my marriage and my business in public. Why are you suddenly concerned about privacy?””
Celeste's cheeks flushed.
“I didn't force him to do anything.””
“No,” Renee replied.
“You only agreed to stand beside him while he pretended I didn't exist.””
Devon struck the table with his palm.
“That's enough!””
The cupcake box jumped slightly.
Renee flinched.
A few guests stepped backward.
Devon looked around and realized everyone was watching.
He lowered his voice.
“Please. We can discuss the paperwork at home.””
Renee carefully returned the document to the table.
“Did you sign it?””
Devon didn't answer.
“Devon. Did you sign it?””
Celeste looked at him.
Then she reached into the envelope and removed another sheet.
“He signed the preliminary agreement last week.””
Renee's face went cold.
“Last week?””
Devon looked at the floor.
Renee remembered that week.
She remembered coming home from the supermarket with swollen feet and finding Devon asleep on the couch.
She remembered asking him about the shop.
He had kissed her forehead and said everything was going perfectly.
She remembered asking whether he needed help with the paperwork.
He had told her not to worry.
Now she understood why.
She looked at Celeste.
“Did you know I was pregnant when you signed this?””
Celeste hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Did you know I was his wife?””
Celeste glanced at Devon.
“He told me you were separated.””
Renee turned toward her husband.
“Were we separated?””
Devon shook his head slightly.
“We were having problems.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“We weren't officially separated.””
Renee gave a small, broken laugh.
“Not officially?””
She looked down at her wedding ring.
The diamond caught the light from the reception window.
For eight years, she had worn it through supermarket shifts, hospital visits, sleepless nights, and every difficult month when Devon had been trying to save enough money to open this shop.
She had sold an old necklace to help him buy equipment.
She had painted walls while carrying his child.
She had packed his lunches and listened to him talk about his dream until she could repeat every detail herself.
And now, on opening day, she was being presented with paperwork that made her look like someone who had already left.
Renee slowly removed her ring.
Devon noticed.
“Renee, what are you doing?””
She placed it on the table beside the envelope.
“I'm trying to understand when my husband became a stranger.””
Devon reached toward her hand.
She pulled it away.
“Don't.””
Paula stood motionless near the reception counter.
The guests had stopped pretending not to listen.
Celeste looked down at the ring.
Then she spoke.
“Devon told me he was going to make everything official after the opening.””
Renee looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Celeste swallowed.
“He said once the business was registered under the new ownership, he would be free to start over.””
Devon turned sharply.
“I never said that.””
Celeste stared at him.
“You told me we'd announce our relationship today.””
“Not like this.””
“You said Renee already knew.””
Renee slowly stood.
Her knees felt weak, but she kept her balance by resting one hand on the table.
“Announce your relationship?””
Devon rubbed his face.
“Renee, please listen.””
“No. You listen.””
She pointed toward the cupcakes.
“I brought those because I thought today was the beginning of something good.””
Then she pointed toward the paperwork.
“But you brought something else to the table.””
Devon looked at her.
“I'm not trying to take everything from you.””
Renee's eyes hardened.
“Then why does this document say otherwise?””
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came from behind the group.
“Because the document isn't the only thing Devon signed.””
Everyone turned.
An older man in a dark gray suit stood near the entrance.
He carried a leather briefcase and wore a small silver badge clipped to his jacket.
Devon's face changed immediately.
“Mr. Harris?””
The man stepped forward.
“I'm sorry to interrupt the grand opening. But I believe Renee deserves to see the original ownership records before anyone asks her to sign anything.””
Renee stared at him.
“Who are you?””
He placed his briefcase on the reception table.
“My name is Robert Harris. I'm the attorney who handled the original purchase and business registration.””
Devon took a step toward him.
“Robert, we agreed to discuss this next week.””
Robert opened his briefcase.
“We did. But I received a concerning message this morning.””
He removed a thick folder.
Then he looked directly at Renee.
“Mrs. Carter, before you leave, there's something you need to know about the money used to open this shop.””
Renee's heart began pounding.
Robert opened the folder to a page marked with a yellow tab.
May you like
And the first name printed beneath the heading made Devon take an involuntary step backward.
*RENEE CARTER.*
