Chapter 6: The Signature That Changed Everything

Leon was standing in the hotel hallway when his phone rang.

It was Marcus.

He answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

“What's going on?”” Leon demanded.

Marcus sounded irritated.

“Why are you making this complicated?””

“Did you submit paperwork involving my house?””

A pause.

Then Marcus laughed.

“Man, relax. It's nothing serious.””

“Did you?””

“I was trying to help Mom.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Marcus sighed.

“Mom said you wanted to make sure she was taken care of. I was looking into a family trust.””

Leon leaned against the wall.

“Why is my name on a transfer document?””

“Because you're the owner.””

“And why does it have a signature dated three weeks ago?””

Another pause.

“Listen, I don't know what Nadine told you—”

“I'm asking you.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Leon, you signed something at Mom's birthday dinner.””

Leon froze.

“What?””

“Remember? We were at the house. Mom brought those papers. You signed a few things.””

Leon remembered the evening.

Patrice had celebrated her sixty-first birthday at their home in Atlanta. Marcus had arrived with a folder and said he had brought some documents concerning their mother's medical arrangements and financial planning.

Leon had signed several pages.

He had been distracted.

Nadine had been in the kitchen preparing dessert.

He hadn't read every page.

“What did I sign?””

Marcus exhaled.

“It's a family arrangement.””

“Marcus, what did I sign?””

“I'm telling you, it's not a big deal.””

“Then send me a copy.””

“I don't have it.””

“That's convenient.””

Marcus's voice hardened.

“Look, Mom needs security. You've got a good house. You've got a good job.

Nadine has money. Why are you acting like we're trying to steal something?””

Leon closed his eyes.

There it was.

The assumption that his wife's savings were a family resource.

“Don't talk about Nadine's money.””

“Why? Everybody knows she paid for the house.””

Leon straightened.

“What?””

Marcus continued.

“Mom said Nadine put most of the money down. That's exactly why we need to protect the property before she decides to take everything if you two split up.””

Leon stared at the hallway carpet.

His brother had just admitted that the family knew about Nadine's contribution.

And instead of respecting it, they had used it as justification to try to secure the property.

“I'm hanging up.””

“Leon, don't be stupid.””

The call ended.

He immediately opened his messages and searched for the night of Patrice's birthday.

There was a picture of the dinner.

Nadine stood beside him, smiling, holding a birthday cake.

Marcus stood behind them with a folder.

Leon remembered Patrice saying, “Just sign these so I don't have to worry about things later.””

He remembered Nadine asking what the papers were.

He had answered, “Just Mom's estate stuff.””

Nadine had returned to the kitchen.

He had signed.

Leon sat down on the hallway bench.

His phone rang again.

This time, Nadine.

He answered immediately.

“Baby—”

“Don't call me that right now.””

He swallowed.

“Okay.””

“Leon, did you sign a property transfer document three weeks ago?””

He stared at the floor.

“Marcus says I signed something at Mom's birthday.””

“Did you read it?””

“No.””

“Did you ask what it was?””

“He said it was for Mom's estate planning.””

Nadine was silent.

Then she asked, “Did you sign it voluntarily?””

Leon rubbed his forehead.

“I thought I was signing something else.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

“I didn't know it involved our house.””

Nadine took a breath.

“I'm sending you the document Denise found. Look at it.””

A notification appeared.

Leon opened the attachment.

At the top was the title:

*AFFIDAVIT OF INTENDED PROPERTY TRANSFER.*

Below it was his name.

His address.

And his signature.

The document appeared to indicate that he intended to transfer his ownership interest into a proposed family trust.

The proposed beneficiary was Patrice Reed.

Leon read the page twice.

“Is this real?”” he asked.

“It's a copy of what Marcus submitted to the title company. Denise is checking the status.””

“But I never agreed to give Mom the house.””

“Then you need to explain why your signature is there.””

“I will.””

Nadine's voice softened, but only slightly.

“Leon, I need you to understand something. I didn't spend years building our life so somebody could quietly take what we worked for.””

“I know.””

“No. I don't think you do.””

He looked at the document again.

“I'll fix this.””

“Don't make promises you don't understand.””

“I'll call Marcus. I'll talk to Mom. I'll make sure nothing happens.””

Nadine sighed.

“You should have protected our marriage before it became a property issue.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

He couldn't answer.

The call ended.

Inside the hotel room, Camille sat on the bed, watching television without sound.

When Leon entered, she looked up.

“Was that Nadine?””

He nodded.

“What did Marcus say?””

Leon held up the document.

“He used my signature.””

Camille sat upright.

“What?””

“Apparently, I signed something at Mom's birthday.””

Camille looked horrified.

“Leon, what did you sign?””

“I don't know.””

She stood.

“That's not good.””

He laughed bitterly.

“Thanks for the observation.””

Camille took the document from him.

She read the heading.

Then she looked at the signature.

“That's your handwriting.””

“I know.””

“Mom said this was about estate planning?””

“That's what Marcus told me.””

Camille lowered the paper.

“Leon, I was at that birthday dinner.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“I saw Mom give Marcus the folder before dessert. He told her you had signed the documents.””

Leon stared.

“Why didn't you say anything?””

“I didn't know what they were. But I remember Mom telling him to keep the folder away from Nadine.””

Leon felt his stomach turn.

“What?””

Camille nodded.

“She said Nadine would make a problem out of it.””

Leon sat down heavily.

His mother had deliberately kept the documents away from his wife.

His brother had presented them as harmless.

And he had signed without reading.

He took out his phone and called Patrice.

She answered on the second ring.

“Leon, finally. Are you coming down for dinner?””

“Did you know Marcus submitted a property transfer document with my signature?””

Silence.

Then Patrice sighed.

“Your brother is trying to help.””

“Did you know?””

“I knew he was handling the paperwork.””

“You told me it was estate planning.””

“It is estate planning.””

“For whom? You?””

“Leon, don't be disrespectful.””

“Did you intend to put my house in your name?””

Patrice lowered her voice.

“I wanted to make sure your future was secure.””

“My future?””

“Yes. You don't know what can happen in a marriage. Women change.

People divorce. I don't want you losing everything.””

Leon stood.

“Nadine paid eighty-five thousand dollars toward that house.””

“And you married her. That doesn't mean you should let her control everything.””

“She doesn't control anything!””

Patrice snapped.

“Then why did she cancel the hotel payment and run away?””

Leon stared at the wall.

Because he had no answer that would make his mother look better.

Patrice continued.

“Listen to me. Marcus has already spoken to someone about the trust. If you back out now, we'll all look foolish.””

Leon gripped the phone.

“Did you tell Marcus to submit that document?””

“I told him to protect this family.””

“Mom, answer the question.””

Patrice's voice became cold.

“After everything I've done for you, you're going to question me because your wife is upset?””

Leon looked at the attachment again.

Then he asked the question that had been sitting in his chest since the hotel lobby.

“Did you ever intend to let Nadine remain part of this family?””

Patrice didn't hesitate.

“I intended to let you have a peaceful life.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

“Leon, your wife has money. She has a career. She has options. I wanted to make sure my children weren't left with nothing.””

Leon slowly lowered the phone.

“You wanted her money.””

Patrice's voice sharpened.

“I wanted what was best for my son.””

The call ended.

Camille watched him.

“What did she say?””

Leon sat down.

“She admitted she wanted the house protected for us.””

Camille frowned.

“Us?””

“Her and Marcus.””

Camille shook her head.

“That's not protecting us. That's stealing from Nadine.””

Leon didn't respond.

His phone vibrated again.

An email from Denise Carter had arrived.

He opened it.

The attorney had attached a short message:

Leon, please contact me as soon as possible. The document appears to have been submitted for preliminary title review. We need to establish whether any additional documents were signed and whether the submission can be withdrawn.

Then came another sentence.

There is also a second document in the file.

Leon opened the attachment.

It was a separate authorization.

His eyes moved down the page.

This one concerned access to financial information connected to the property.

And beside the name of the proposed authorized representative was a name he recognized immediately.

*Patrice Reed.*

Camille leaned over his shoulder.

“Leon?””

He couldn't speak.

Because at the bottom of the document, beneath the authorization language, was a statement claiming that Nadine had consented to the arrangement.

Her name appeared beside a signature.

But Nadine had never signed it.

Leon enlarged the image.

He recognized the signature.

It looked almost exactly like his wife's.

Almost.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, the caller was Nadine.

He answered.

“Baby, I just saw the second document.””

Her voice was controlled.

“Leon, I need you to listen carefully.””

“I'm listening.””

“Someone forged my signature.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“No, you don't understand. Denise just found something else.””

“What?””

Nadine paused.

Then she spoke slowly.

“The person who submitted the document didn't just use your name and mine. They also attached a copy of my driver's license.””

Leon felt his stomach drop.

“Who had access to that?””

Nadine took a breath.

“Your mother.””

And then she added the one detail that made Leon realize the problem had begun long before the vacation.

May you like

“She photographed my license when she borrowed my purse at Thanksgiving.””

*For the first time, Leon understood that his mother hadn't simply planned to exclude his wife from a vacation. She had been preparing to take control of something that belonged to both of them.*
