Chapter 2: The Bill Nobody Expected

“Mom, what exactly did you tell Nadine?””

Leon kept his voice low, but the question carried across the reception counter.

Patrice looked offended.

“What kind of question is that?””

“The hotel needs another card.””

“And?””

“And I don't have enough available on mine to cover all this.””

Patrice stared at him as though he had personally insulted her.

“Leon, you make good money. You're a grown man. Surely you can manage a family vacation.””

Leon rubbed his forehead.

He worked as an operations supervisor for a distribution company outside Atlanta. His salary was respectable, but respectable did not mean unlimited.

He had agreed to the vacation because Nadine had offered to organize everything.

She had found the resort, negotiated the room arrangements, and divided the costs into manageable payments.

Or, at least, that was what Leon had told himself.

The truth was that Nadine had paid most of it.

He looked at the billing summary again.

“Mom, this is thousands of dollars.””

Patrice folded her arms.

“Your wife was supposed to pay.””

Leon looked up.

“My wife?””

“Yes. She volunteered.””

“She volunteered to organize the trip. She didn't say she would pay for everything.””

Patrice gave him a sharp look.

“Don't embarrass me in front of these people.””

The receptionist politely lowered her eyes to the computer.

Camille stood beside the luggage cart, holding her designer sunglasses.

“Can we please figure this out?”” she asked.

“I just drove five hours. I need to get upstairs.””

Patrice turned toward her daughter.

“Your brother is handling it.””

Camille sighed.

“Okay, but I have my own expenses. I thought Nadine had everything covered.””

Leon looked at her.

“That's what everybody thought.””

A few minutes earlier, everyone had been laughing about the oceanfront rooms.

Now the family stood in a line, surrounded by expensive luggage and uncomfortable silence.

The receptionist remained professional.

“Sir, we can process payment through another card, or we can review alternative room arrangements.””

Patrice immediately objected.

“Alternative arrangements? We booked these rooms months ago.””

“Yes, ma'am. But the remaining balance must be secured before check-in.””

Leon took out his wallet.

He had one credit card with a $3,000 limit. He knew there was less than $1,500 available because he had recently paid for car repairs.

He handed it over.

The receptionist ran the card.

A moment later, the terminal beeped.

<text>DECLINED.</text>

Leon stared at the screen.

“Try it again.””

The receptionist did.

Another beep.

“I'm sorry, sir.””

Patrice's mouth fell open.

“Are you serious?””

Leon took the card back.

“There's probably a security hold.””

“Then call the bank!””

“I will.””

He stepped away from the counter and dialed the number on the back of his card.

While he waited, Patrice leaned toward Camille.

“This is ridiculous. Nadine knows we came all this way.””

Camille looked toward the entrance.

“Maybe she should come back.””

Patrice turned sharply.

“Why?””

“Because she booked everything.””

“She can come back when she's ready to apologize.””

Camille hesitated.

“Mom, she didn't do anything.””

Patrice's expression hardened.

“Excuse me?””

“You told her to sleep in the car.””

Patrice lowered her voice.

“Camille, you are not going to take her side after everything I've done for this family.””

Camille looked away.

Leon finally got through to his bank.

He explained the declined payment, verified his identity, and asked whether the transaction could be approved.

The representative told him his available credit was insufficient.

He ended the call.

“Mom, I can't cover this.””

Patrice stared at him.

“Then use your savings.””

“My savings are for the house.””

“Then put it on another card.””

“I don't have another card.””

Patrice looked genuinely shocked.

“You mean to tell me you invited your family on vacation and can't pay for the hotel?””

Leon laughed once, without humor.

“Me? I invited everybody? Nadine arranged this.””

Patrice stepped closer.

“Don't put this on me. You were the one who said she should handle the bookings.””

Leon opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Because she was right.

Three months earlier, he had told Nadine that his mother wanted to celebrate her sixty-first birthday somewhere beautiful.

Nadine had suggested Myrtle Beach.

Leon had kissed her cheek and said, “You're the best, baby. You always know how to make my family happy.””

He remembered that sentence now.

He also remembered his mother's private instructions.

Patrice had called him the previous week.

She had said she wanted some uninterrupted time with her children.

She had specifically asked whether Nadine could stay behind or find somewhere else to sleep.

Leon had laughed nervously.

“Mom, that's my wife.””

Patrice had answered, “Then tell her to give us some space. You know how she gets when she wants attention.””

He hadn't defended Nadine.

He had simply said he would figure it out.

And now he had.

He had figured it out by allowing his mother to humiliate his wife in public.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Nadine appeared.

*NADINE: I left the resort. Don't call me to ask me to pay for anything.*

Leon stared at the message.

He immediately typed.

*LEON: Baby, can we talk?*

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

A second message arrived.

*NADINE: You had an opportunity to talk when your mother pushed my suitcase toward the parking lot.*

Leon swallowed.

Patrice leaned over his shoulder.

“What did she say?””

“Nothing.””

“Call her.””

“Mom—”

“Leon, call your wife. Tell her to stop being childish and put the card back on the reservation.””

He looked at her.

“Do you hear yourself?””

Patrice's eyebrows rose.

“What?””

“You told her she wasn't family.””

Patrice scoffed.

“Because she isn't my daughter.””

“She is my wife.””

“And I'm your mother.””

The sentence silenced him.

Patrice knew exactly where to press.

She had raised Leon alone for several years after his father left. She reminded him of that whenever he disagreed with her.

She reminded him of the nights she worked double shifts.

The school clothes she bought.

The sacrifices she made.

And Leon had spent most of his adult life trying to repay a debt that could never be paid.

The receptionist cleared her throat.

“Sir, would you like me to show you our available smaller-room options?””

Patrice immediately shook her head.

“No. We paid for the good rooms.””

The receptionist glanced at the computer.

“Your reservation has not been fully paid.””

Patrice's lips tightened.

Leon looked at the room list.

Six rooms.

Six families' worth of expectations.

And not one person had brought enough money to pay for what they had demanded.

Then Camille spoke quietly.

“Leon, maybe we should call Nadine and apologize.””

Patrice turned.

“Don't you dare.””

Camille raised her chin.

“I'm just saying.””

“You're saying too much.””

Leon took a breath.

“I'm going to call her.””

He walked toward the windows and dialed.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nadine answered.

“Hello?””

“Baby, listen. We need to talk about what happened.””

“There's nothing to discuss.””

“Mom didn't mean it like that.””

A pause.

Then Nadine spoke.

“Leon, she pushed my suitcase away from the reception desk while I was holding the card that paid for her room.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“And you watched.””

“I was trying to avoid a scene.””

“No. You were avoiding your mother.””

He had no answer.

Then Nadine asked a question he hadn't expected.

“Did you know she had already decided I wasn't supposed to stay in the room with you?””

Leon looked back toward Patrice.

His mother was speaking to the receptionist again, demanding that the resort honor the original room assignments.

He lowered his voice.

“Who told you that?””

Nadine was quiet for a moment.

Then she said:

“Because I found something in your mother's messages three days ago.””

Leon stopped breathing for a second.

“What messages?””

May you like

And before he could ask another question, Nadine said the words that made him grip the phone tighter.

“Your mother didn't just want me out of the hotel. She had a whole plan for why I shouldn't be there.””
