Chapter 8: The Money My Sister Had Been Hiding

At 8:15 the following morning, David's attorney arrived.

Mark Bennett carried a leather briefcase and a thick folder of documents.

David had barely slept.

Neither had Sarah.

She sat at the far end of the dining table while Michael ate breakfast upstairs. Jordan was watching cartoons in the living room.

Mark placed his briefcase on the table.

"Before we discuss anything else, I want to make one thing clear. We are not going to assume that every document Sarah received is legitimate.""

Sarah looked uncomfortable.

David pushed the photographed paperwork toward Mark.

"Start with the trust.""

Mark examined the reference number.

"I contacted the firm listed in the records. They confirmed that Emily established an irrevocable trust for Michael shortly before her death.""

David leaned forward.

"How much?""

"The original amount was approximately four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""

David stared at him.

"What?""

Mark turned a page.

"According to the preliminary account history, the trust has continued receiving investment returns. The current estimated balance is higher.""

"How much higher?""

"Approximately six hundred and forty thousand dollars, subject to a full accounting.""

David slowly sat back.

He remembered Emily telling him she wanted Michael to have something secure.

He had assumed she meant a savings account.

He had never imagined this.

"Who controls it?""

Mark tapped the document.

"Your sister, Karen, was appointed successor trustee after Emily's death.""

David looked toward Sarah.

She covered her mouth.

Mark continued.

"That doesn't automatically mean anything improper occurred. A trustee can manage assets without being the beneficial owner. However, we need the complete transaction history.""

David stared at the page.

"Has money been withdrawn?""

Mark turned to another sheet.

"There are several transfers that require explanation.""

"How many?""

"Five significant transfers over the last four years.""

David's voice became colder.

"Where did they go?""

"Some appear to have been transferred into accounts associated with a company registered to your sister.""

Sarah suddenly stood.

"I knew it.""

David looked at her.

"What?""

"Karen told me she had access to some of Emily's money because she was helping manage family investments.""

Mark raised his eyes.

"Did she tell you that she could use money from the trust?""

Sarah shook her head.

"No. She said the money was being managed for Michael.""

Mark made a note.

David leaned forward.

"How much was transferred?""

Mark checked the figures.

"The preliminary total is approximately one hundred and ten thousand dollars.""

David gripped the edge of the table.

"One hundred and ten thousand?""

"We don't yet know whether these were authorized investments, reimbursements, or improper withdrawals.""

David looked at Sarah.

"Did Karen tell you about the trust before you started trying to send Michael away?""

Sarah nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"She said the trust was another reason Michael didn't need your financial support.""

David stared at her.

"She convinced you that my son already had enough money, so you could prioritize Jordan?""

Sarah lowered her eyes.

"I thought I was making things fair.""

Mark closed the folder.

"There's another issue.""

David turned toward him.

"What now?""

"The document Sarah showed us yesterday. The proposed change of residence.""

Mark examined the photograph on his laptop.

"It appears to have been prepared using personal information that may have come from other family records. I would like to compare the signature against authenticated documents.""

David nodded.

"Do whatever you need.""

Mark turned toward Sarah.

"Did you send this document to anyone?""

Sarah hesitated.

"I sent a copy to Karen.""

"Did you send it to an attorney?""

"Karen gave me an email address.""

Mark looked up.

"What email address?""

Sarah opened her phone.

She searched through her messages and found the conversation.

She showed him the screen.

Mark read the address, then asked her to forward the message.

A few minutes later, his expression changed.

"David, this address is associated with a legal services company. We need to verify whether anyone there actually represented you or Sarah.""

Sarah looked confused.

"Karen said they were helping us.""

Mark shook his head.

"Nobody can represent David without his authorization.""

David stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, the morning sun reflected off the cars in the driveway.

He had spent years building a comfortable life for his family.

Now he was discovering that the people closest to him had been making decisions about his son without his knowledge.

A door opened upstairs.

Michael came down carrying his school backpack.

"Morning, Dad.""

David turned immediately.

"Morning, buddy.""

Michael noticed the attorney.

"Is everything okay?""

David nodded.

"We're sorting things out.""

Michael looked at the documents.

"Is that about Mom?""

David paused.

"Some of it.""

Michael placed his backpack beside the stairs.

"Can I see?""

David glanced at Mark.

The attorney nodded.

David picked up the original trust document and showed his son the first page.

"This is something your mom arranged for you.""

Michael read the heading.

"Is it money?""

"Yes.""

"Did she leave it for me?""

"She did.""

Michael looked at David.

"Then why did Sarah say it was gone?""

David had no answer.

Mark spoke gently.

"Michael, we're checking the records to make sure everything was handled properly.""

Michael nodded.

"Okay.""

Then he asked another question.

"Does that mean I can buy a bicycle?""

David almost smiled.

"If you still want one, we'll get you one. But you don't need to spend your mother's money to earn something nice.""

Michael gave a small nod.

Sarah watched the exchange with tears in her eyes.

"Michael, I'm sorry.""

The boy looked at her.

She continued.

"I shouldn't have told you those things. I shouldn't have made you feel unwanted.""

Michael didn't respond immediately.

Then he said quietly:

"You made me feel like I had to ask permission to be hungry.""

Sarah broke down crying.

David looked away.

There was nothing he could say that would erase those words.

A few minutes later, the doorbell rang.

David checked the security camera.

Karen was standing outside.

She wore a navy coat and carried a brown leather handbag.

David opened the door.

"Come in.""

Karen entered with a practiced smile.

"David. I wish you hadn't turned this into such a big issue.""

David stepped aside.

"Sit down.""

She walked into the dining room and noticed Mark.

Her smile disappeared.

"Why is your lawyer here?""

"Because we're discussing my son's trust.""

Karen looked at Sarah.

Sarah immediately lowered her eyes.

David placed the documents on the table.

"One hundred and ten thousand dollars. Five transfers. Explain them.""

Karen took off her coat.

"Those were investment movements.""

"Into your company's accounts?""

"Temporary arrangements.""

"Where is the money now?""

"Invested.""

"Show me.""

Karen looked at Mark.

"I don't have to provide confidential business records to someone who isn't a party to the trust.""

Mark remained calm.

"Then you can provide them through the appropriate legal process.""

Karen turned toward David.

"You're letting a lawyer turn your family against you.""

David pointed at the chair.

"Sit down.""

Karen remained standing.

Then she noticed the photograph of Emily beside the trust paperwork.

Her expression changed.

"Why are you bringing Emily into this?""

David looked directly at her.

"Because you did.""

Karen shook her head.

"Emily made mistakes. You know that.""

David's voice dropped.

"Don't talk about my wife.""

Karen leaned toward him.

"Then stop pretending she was perfect.""

The room went silent.

David slowly straightened.

"What did Emily tell you before she died?""

Karen looked away.

"Nothing.""

"Then why did you tell Sarah she was planning to leave me?""

Karen's eyes flickered.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she looked toward Sarah.

"You told him that?""

Sarah stood.

"You told me it was true!""

Karen's expression hardened.

"I told you what you needed to know.""

David stared at his sister.

"What does that mean?""

Karen opened her handbag and pulled out a folded envelope.

She placed it on the table.

"Emily left this with me.""

David looked at the envelope.

His name was written on the front in Emily's handwriting.

He recognized it immediately.

His hands began to tremble.

"Why didn't you give me this?""

Karen looked at him.

"Because Emily asked me to wait.""

"Wait for what?""

Karen glanced at Sarah.

"Until you were ready to hear the truth.""

David opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The first sentence made his heart stop.

David, if Karen ever gives you this letter, it means she has finally decided that the secret is more valuable than keeping our family together.

David looked up.

May you like

Karen had gone pale.

And then he reached the next paragraph.
