Chapter 8: The Truth Margaret Took to Her Grave

I didn't sleep that night.

I sat in Margaret's old bedroom with the photograph resting on my knees.

The sentence kept repeating in my mind.

Richard must never discover what happened on the night Michael was born.

At seven in the morning, Daniel arrived with a thick folder.

He found me sitting at the kitchen table.

"Richard, I think we should talk before you make any decisions.""

I pushed the photograph toward him.

"Have you seen this?""

He examined it carefully.

"Yes.""

I stared at him.

"You knew?""

"No. But I found the original photograph in Edward's storage unit.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't understand its significance until this morning.""

He opened his folder.

Inside were copies of Margaret's hospital records, financial statements, and a handwritten letter.

"Richard, the night Michael was born, Margaret experienced severe complications. The hospital records show that she required an emergency blood transfusion.""

I nodded.

"I remember. I was there.""

Daniel continued.

"Edward was also at the hospital.""

"I know.""

"But he wasn't there because Margaret was having an affair.""

I looked at him.

"Then why?""

Daniel placed a letter on the table.

"Because Margaret had asked him to come.""

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was Margaret's.

*Edward,

I need you to help me protect Richard.

He has worked too hard to build a life for us, and I refuse to let our family's financial problems destroy everything.

Please bring the original investment papers to the hospital.

I need Richard to understand what we agreed upon before it's too late.*

I read the letter twice.

"She was asking him about the investment agreement?""

"That's what it appears to be.""

Daniel opened another document.

"There's also evidence that Edward attempted to use the hospital visit to pressure Margaret into signing over her inheritance.""

I looked up.

"She refused?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did she keep seeing him?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because Edward threatened to reveal something about the family's finances.""

I stood.

"What finances?""

Daniel slid a second letter across the table.

It was dated three days before Margaret died.

*Richard,

If anything happens to me, please don't allow Edward to convince you that Michael owes him anything.

He has already taken more than enough from this family.

I made a terrible mistake when I trusted him with our original investment documents.

I am sorry I didn't tell you sooner.*

My eyes filled.

Margaret hadn't betrayed me.

She had been trying to protect me from her brother.

And somehow, Vanessa had discovered enough pieces of that history to turn it into a weapon.

"Where is the original investment agreement?"" I asked.

Daniel answered immediately.

"At the storage facility. We recovered it yesterday.""

"Then why is Edward still claiming we owe him money?""

"Because he believes the original document was altered.""

I frowned.

"By whom?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"That's what we haven't established.""

A door opened behind us.

Michael entered.

He had barely slept.

"Dad, I need to tell you something about Vanessa.""

I gestured toward the chair.

"Sit.""

He lowered himself slowly.

"She didn't just threaten to reveal the DNA results. She told me she had another plan.""

"What plan?""

"She wanted me to sign a document transferring my future inheritance rights to her.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

"She said it was necessary to protect our marriage if something happened to me.""

I shook my head.

"Did you sign?""

He nodded.

"When?""

"Last month.""

Daniel immediately opened his briefcase.

"Do you have a copy?""

Michael handed him a folded document.

Daniel examined it.

His expression changed.

"Michael, this is not a standard marital agreement.""

"What is it?""

"It's an assignment of beneficial interests.""

Michael frowned.

"Meaning?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Vanessa attempted to obtain control of any assets Michael might eventually receive through the family trust.""

I stared at my son.

"You gave her the rights to your inheritance?""

"I didn't understand what I was signing.""

Daniel tapped the document.

"That may become important. But the agreement contains a clause stating that it becomes effective only after the trustee approves it.""

"Has the trustee approved it?"" I asked.

"No.""

I exhaled.

"Then stop it.""

Daniel nodded.

"I'll handle that.""

Michael lowered his head.

"I thought she loved me.""

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Did you love her?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did you let her convince you that taking everything from your father was the price of your happiness?""

He had no answer.

I pushed the DNA report toward him.

"Michael, you are my son. Nothing in that report changes that.""

His eyes filled.

"Even after what I did?""

I looked at the bruising on my cheek.

"Forgiveness is not the same as trust.""

He nodded.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and slowly stood.

"Richard, we have a problem.""

"What now?""

"The storage facility called. Someone broke into the unit last night.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did they take anything?""

"Most of the original documents are still there.""

"Then what's missing?""

Daniel looked at Michael.

"The original trust agreement. And the sealed envelope containing Margaret's final instructions.""

Michael stood.

"Vanessa?""

Daniel nodded.

"Her vehicle was seen near the facility.""

I reached for my phone.

"Call the police.""

Daniel nodded.

But Michael suddenly spoke.

"Wait.""

We both turned.

He looked pale.

"I know where she's going.""

"Where?""

"To the old Anderson warehouse.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

Michael swallowed.

"Because that's where Edward keeps the documents he uses to blackmail people.""

Daniel closed his briefcase.

"How do you know that?""

Michael looked at me.

"Because I went there once with Vanessa.""

I stood.

"When?""

"Two months ago.""

"And you didn't tell me?""

He looked down.

"I was trying to get my debt erased.""

I stared at him.

"What did you find?""

Michael took a shaky breath.

"Boxes of contracts. Bank records. Photographs.

Medical documents. And a folder with Mom's name on it.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"What was inside?""

Michael looked at me.

"A letter from Edward.""

"What did it say?""

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

"It said Margaret had discovered that Edward was stealing from the family long before Michael was born. And she had threatened to expose him.""

I gripped the table.

"That's why he hated her.""

Michael nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel checked his watch.

"We need to get to that warehouse immediately.""

But as we reached the front door, my phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

It contained a photograph of the missing trust agreement.

Underneath it were seven words.

Come alone, Richard. I have your wife's truth.

A second message arrived.

Bring the original deed to the house.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

"Don't go.""

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

This time, it was a photograph of Chloe.

She was sitting in the back of a car, her hands tied.

May you like

And Vanessa had written:

If you want the girl alive, come alone.
