Chapter 2: The Recording They Never Expected

"...mentally unfit.""

Chloe's words hung in the air.

I stared at her.

"What did you just say?""

She crouched beside me and lowered her voice.

"Vanessa has been telling Michael that you're becoming confused. She says you forget conversations, lose important documents, and sometimes become aggressive.""

I shook my head.

"That's nonsense.""

"I know.""

"Then why would she say those things?""

Chloe looked uncomfortable.

"Because she's trying to get control of your money.""

I slowly closed my fingers around the recording device.

For the first time that evening, I noticed how cold my hands had become.

"How long have you known?""

"About three months.""

"Three months?""

She nodded.

"I didn't know what to do. Vanessa is my cousin, and I thought she was just having problems with Michael. But then I found something in her bedroom.""

"What?""

"A folder with your name on it.""

I looked toward the staircase.

"What was inside?""

"Bank statements. Copies of property documents. Medical forms. And a letter from a lawyer.""

My jaw throbbed.

"What did the letter say?""

Chloe hesitated.

"It was about getting you declared incapable of managing your own affairs.""

I felt as though someone had poured ice water down my back.

My wife, Margaret, had been dead for eight years.

Since then, I had managed our family business, paid our bills, maintained our properties, and raised Michael to adulthood.

I wasn't a helpless old man.

I still woke up at six every morning. I still reviewed every financial transaction. I still remembered every contract I had ever signed.

And yet, my own daughter-in-law was preparing to take away my independence.

"Why would Michael agree to this?"" I asked.

Chloe looked down.

"Because she told him you were hiding money from him.""

I closed my eyes.

That explained a great deal.

Michael had been asking increasingly strange questions about my finances. He wanted access to my personal accounts. He wanted to know where I kept my business records. He even suggested that I transfer my house into his name to simplify inheritance arrangements.

I had refused.

Not because I didn't trust my son.

Because I believed ownership should never be transferred simply because someone was impatient to inherit it.

"Did you hear anything else?"" I asked.

Chloe nodded.

"Vanessa told someone on the phone that once you were declared incompetent, Michael could become your legal guardian.""

I looked at the recording device.

"Did you record that conversation?""

"No. But I recorded what happened tonight.""

She held my gaze.

"Everything. Including Vanessa putting the lipstick on her own face.""

For the first time since the punch, I felt something other than pain.

Hope.

"Chloe, you need to be careful. If Vanessa discovers this, she may blame you.""

"I know.""

"Then why are you helping me?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because I watched you pay for my mother's surgery last year. You didn't even tell Vanessa. You just sent the money directly to the hospital.""

I remembered it.

Her mother had needed an emergency operation, and Chloe had been desperate.

It had never occurred to me that she would remember something so small.

"Your mother deserved help," I said.

Chloe shook her head.

"It wasn't small to us.""

Suddenly, footsteps sounded overhead.

Chloe immediately stood.

"Go to your study," she whispered.

"Don't let Vanessa see the device.""

I nodded.

She hurried toward the kitchen.

I slowly climbed the staircase, one painful step at a time.

My study was at the end of the upstairs hallway. It was the one room in the house that still smelled like my late wife.

Margaret's old photographs sat on the shelves. Her favorite porcelain bird rested beside my desk.

I locked the door.

Then I examined the recording device.

It was small, but the screen displayed several saved audio files.

I pressed play.

At first, I heard movement, then Vanessa's unmistakable voice.

"Michael, your father is getting suspicious.""

My son's voice followed.

"He always has been protective of his money.""

"That's why we need to move quickly. If he refuses to cooperate, we'll have to make him look unstable.""

I stopped breathing.

Then came another recording.

Vanessa laughed.

"Did you see how easily he fell for it? All I had to do was put the lipstick on my face.""

Michael chuckled.

"Just make sure Chloe doesn't get involved.""

"She's too stupid to understand what's happening.""

I gripped the edge of my desk.

My son knew.

He knew Vanessa was planning to deceive me.

And he had agreed to help her.

The recording continued.

Michael's voice became quieter.

"Once the house is transferred, we'll sell it. Dad can stay in assisted living somewhere. We don't need that old place.""

Vanessa laughed again.

"Don't worry, sweetheart. By Christmas, we'll have everything.""

I paused the recording.

My eyes fell on a photograph of Margaret.

She was standing beside me on our wedding anniversary, her head resting against my shoulder.

I remembered what she told me shortly before she died.

"Richard, never let anyone convince you that loving someone means surrendering your judgment.""

At the time, I thought she was talking about business.

Now I understood.

I picked up my phone and called my longtime attorney, Daniel Brooks.

He answered after the third ring.

"Richard? It's nearly midnight. Is everything all right?""

"No, Daniel. It isn't.""

I explained what had happened.

I told him about Vanessa, the lipstick, the punch, and the recording.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he asked one question.

"Have you signed any property documents recently?""

My stomach tightened.

"Michael brought me some papers about three weeks ago. He said they were related to the family business.""

"What exactly did you sign?""

"I don't remember every page.""

Daniel exhaled.

"Richard, don't sign anything else. I'll come over first thing tomorrow morning.""

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"I want you to investigate every financial account connected to the family business.""

There was a pause.

"Why?""

"Because I have a feeling this isn't just about my house.""

Daniel's voice became serious.

"Richard, I was hoping you wouldn't discover this under these circumstances.""

I sat upright.

"What do you mean?""

He lowered his voice.

"Three days ago, someone contacted my office asking for copies of your estate documents. They claimed you had authorized them.""

"Who?""

"Your son.""

I stared at the wall.

"Michael?""

"Yes. And he wasn't alone.""

"Who was with him?""

Daniel paused.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Vanessa brought a woman claiming to be a physician. She submitted a preliminary assessment stating that you were showing signs of dementia.""

I gripped the phone.

"That's impossible. I've never met that woman.""

"I know. That's why I refused to release anything.""

I looked down at the recording device.

"Daniel, can you identify her?""

"I already have her name.""

I waited.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Dr. Helen Carter.""

I didn't recognize it.

But when he added one more detail, I felt the room spin.

"Richard, she is the same doctor who signed the medical report used in your wife's final hospitalization.""

My wife had died eight years earlier.

And suddenly, I wondered whether Vanessa had chosen her accomplices long before she entered my family.

Before I could ask another question, someone knocked on my study door.

Three sharp knocks.

Then Michael's voice came through the wood.

"Dad, open up. We need to talk about the house.""

Daniel heard him.

"Richard, don't open that door until we speak again.""

But Michael knocked harder.

"Dad! I know you're in there!""

Then Vanessa's voice joined his.

"Michael, tell him the lawyer is here.""

I looked at my phone.

"What lawyer?""

Daniel went silent for a moment.

Then he said:

"Richard, I didn't send anyone to your house.""

The door handle began turning.

May you like

And someone outside announced:

"Mr. Anderson, we're here to assess whether you're still mentally capable of living independently.""
