Chapter 5: The Message That Changed Everything

The first course arrived at seven fifteen.

I was still seated at the little table near the service entrance when my cousin Emily approached.

She was twenty-eight, worked as a nurse, and had always been one of the few people in our family who spoke to me without asking for anything.

"Claire, why are you sitting here?""

I moved my napkin onto my lap.

"Apparently, the main table is full.""

Emily looked toward the large table.

There were two empty chairs.

She frowned.

"That's ridiculous. Come sit with me.""

Before I could answer, Vanessa called across the room.

"Emily! Your seat is over here.""

Emily ignored her.

She pulled out the chair beside me.

"Sit.""

I smiled.

"Thank you.""

We had barely started eating when Margaret noticed us.

"Emily, what are you doing?""

Emily looked up.

"Eating dinner.""

"You're supposed to be sitting with the family.""

Emily glanced at the two empty chairs.

"There's room.""

Margaret placed her fork down.

"Don't argue with me tonight.""

Emily's cheeks turned pink.

I touched her arm.

"It's okay.""

"No, it isn't," Emily whispered.

Vanessa leaned across the table.

"Emily, your aunt has worked very hard to organize this evening. Let's not spoil it.""

I looked at her.

"Actually, I organized it.""

Vanessa smiled without warmth.

"And we're all very grateful.""

Her tone made the words sound like an insult.

Emily looked at me.

"Did you pay for everything?""

I nodded.

Her eyes widened.

"Then why are you sitting next to the kitchen?""

Before I could answer, my mother stood up.

She tapped her glass.

The room gradually fell silent.

"I want to thank everyone for being here tonight," Margaret began.

She looked radiant beneath the chandelier.

"Seventy years is a wonderful milestone. I've been blessed with a beautiful family, and especially with two children who have always supported me.""

She gestured toward Daniel.

"Daniel has been such a wonderful son.""

People clapped.

Daniel stood and kissed her cheek.

Vanessa applauded enthusiastically.

Then Margaret turned slightly toward me.

"And Claire, of course, has helped make tonight possible.""

Several guests looked in my direction.

I waited.

"She's very good at handling these practical things.""

A few people chuckled.

My face remained still.

Margaret continued.

"Every family has different roles. Some people are natural leaders. Others are better at supporting from behind the scenes.""

She raised her glass.

"To family.""

Everyone lifted their glasses.

I didn't.

Emily noticed.

She lowered hers too.

After the toast, the second course arrived.

My phone vibrated.

It was a message from an unknown number.

Claire, this is Thomas from the restaurant. Could you please step into the lobby when convenient? There's a matter regarding your authorization that requires your attention.

I stood.

"Where are you going?"" Emily asked.

"Just checking something.""

I walked into the lobby.

Thomas was waiting near the reception desk.

He held a folder.

"Ms. Whitmore, I apologize for interrupting your evening.""

"What's happened?""

He opened the folder.

"We've discovered that an additional payment authorization was submitted using your personal information.""

My stomach tightened.

"By Daniel?""

Thomas nodded.

"Mr. Whitmore provided your card details and requested an expanded authorization.""

"Was it accepted?""

"No. The verification process flagged the request because the signature didn't match the original documentation.""

I stared at him.

"Someone signed my name?""

Thomas lowered his voice.

"We can't determine who completed the signature, but the document was submitted under your name.""

He showed me a copy.

At the bottom was a signature that looked almost like mine.

Almost.

I studied it.

My signature always ended with a long downward stroke.

This one didn't.

I felt my hands go cold.

"Can I have a copy?""

"Certainly.""

I photographed the document and returned it.

Thomas hesitated.

"Would you like us to suspend all additional payment requests?""

"Yes.""

"Would you also like us to require in-person confirmation for the remaining balance?""

I nodded.

"Absolutely.""

He made a note.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"If I withdraw my remaining payment authorization, what happens to the original deposit?""

"Your deposit remains subject to the original booking agreement. Withdrawing authorization for future charges doesn't automatically reverse a completed payment.""

"Understood.""

"And the remaining agreed balance would need to be settled by another authorized payer before the event closes.""

I looked toward the private dining room.

Through the glass doors, I could see my family laughing.

Daniel was pouring champagne.

Vanessa was taking another photograph.

My mother was opening a gift.

They looked perfectly comfortable.

"Thank you, Thomas.""

I walked back inside.

Daniel noticed me immediately.

He approached before I had reached my chair.

"Where have you been?""

"Speaking with the manager.""

His eyes narrowed.

"About what?""

"Your payment request.""

He glanced toward the other guests.

"Keep your voice down.""

I looked directly at him.

"Did you submit a payment authorization using my name?""

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

"What are you talking about?""

I pulled out my phone.

"The restaurant has a copy.""

He leaned closer.

"Claire, don't start accusing me of things.""

"I asked you a question.""

He rubbed his jaw.

"Mom wanted the evening to go smoothly. I was just helping.""

"By signing my name?""

"I didn't sign anything.""

"Then who did?""

He looked away.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely uncomfortable.

Vanessa appeared beside him.

"What is this conversation about?""

I turned toward her.

"Someone submitted an additional payment authorization using my information.""

She rolled her eyes.

"Oh, for heaven's sake.""

"Do you know anything about it?""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Daniel was trying to make sure your mother had the birthday she deserved.""

"With my card?""

"You're the one who offered to pay.""

"I offered to pay for the agreed dinner. Not every additional expense you invent.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Claire, listen. We can discuss this tomorrow.""

I shook my head.

"No. We're discussing it now.""

Margaret approached.

"What is going on?""

Daniel immediately changed his expression.

"Nothing, Mom. Claire is upset again.""

Margaret looked at me.

"Can you please stop ruining my birthday?""

I stared at her.

Then I held up my phone.

"Someone submitted a payment authorization using my name without my permission.""

She glanced at the screen.

Her expression barely changed.

"Well, surely there is some explanation.""

"Do you think it's acceptable?""

She sighed.

"Claire, your brother was trying to help.""

I looked at Daniel.

Then at my mother.

And finally at Vanessa.

Nobody looked surprised.

Nobody asked who had done it.

Nobody seemed particularly concerned that someone had used my identity to secure additional charges.

That was when I understood something.

This wasn't a misunderstanding.

They had planned around my money so thoroughly that they believed my permission was just a formality.

I slipped my phone back into my handbag.

"Enjoy your dinner.""

I sat down.

But I wasn't thinking about dessert anymore.

May you like

I was thinking about the authorization document.

And about the fact that my family seemed much more frightened of losing access to my card than losing me.
