Chapter 9: The Apology Nobody Expected

Three days later, Marcus asked Evelyn to meet.

Not at the house.

Not around Nia.

A quiet café.

Neutral ground.

Evelyn arrived exactly on time.

She sat across from him.

“You look tired.””

Marcus almost smiled.

“I am.””

“Good.””

He stared.

She looked away.

“I mean…”

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Don’t fix the sentence.””

She became quiet.

For once.

Marcus placed the recordings on the table.

Evelyn saw them.

Her expression changed.

“You recorded me?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

“Denise.””

Evelyn looked hurt.

“My own daughter.””

Marcus watched her.

“That’s what you’re focusing on?””

Silence.

He continued.

“Not Nia?””

Evelyn looked down.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then:

“I was trying to help.””

Marcus nodded.

“I believe you.””

That surprised her.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes softened.

“And?””

“And you hurt her while trying to help.””

Evelyn looked away.

“I never wanted that.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you doing this?””

Marcus answered quietly:

“Because love without accountability becomes damage.””

The words stayed between them.

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

A rare sight.

“I don’t know how to apologize.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then learn.””

She nodded.

A week later, Evelyn stood in front of Nia.

No excuses.

No explanations.

Just an apology.

“I was wrong.””

Nia looked nervous.

Evelyn continued.

“I thought being strict meant being strong.””

She swallowed.

“But I was cruel.””

Nia said nothing.

“I hurt you.””

A tear moved down Evelyn’s cheek.

“And I made you afraid of someone who should have made you feel safe.””

Nia looked at Marcus.

Then back at her grandmother.

“Are you still mad at me?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

“Do you still think I’m bad?””

Evelyn’s face broke.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“No, baby.””

Nia nodded.

Then after a long pause:

“I don’t want to eat from the dog bowl anymore.””

Evelyn started crying.

Marcus looked away.

Some wounds were small sentences.

But they carried enormous weight.
