Chapter 9: The Marriage That Was Never an Accident
Naomi didn't sit down.
She stood in the kitchen with the phone pressed against her ear, listening to the silence on the other end.
"Mom?""
Her mother, Denise, took a shaky breath.
"Are you alone?""
"Yes. Zuri is asleep.""
"Then listen to me carefully.""
Naomi's stomach tightened.
"What did Adrian do?""
"Before you two started dating, he contacted your father.""
Naomi frowned.
"My father?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Denise hesitated.
"He wanted to discuss a business opportunity.""
Naomi closed her eyes.
"Mom, what business opportunity?""
"Your father had invested in a small property development project years ago. It was something he hoped would provide security for our family.""
Naomi remembered the stories.
Her father had been a practical man.
He worked long hours, saved carefully, and believed that property was something you could pass down to your children.
He had died before Naomi turned twenty-five.
She swallowed.
"What does Adrian have to do with Dad's investment?""
Denise's voice became softer.
"Adrian was introduced to your father through Marcus Hill.""
Naomi felt the air leave her lungs.
"Marcus?""
"Yes. They knew each other through business.""
Naomi walked toward the living room.
She lowered herself onto the sofa.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because your father asked me not to interfere with your life. He wanted you to make your own decisions.""
Naomi rubbed her forehead.
"Mom, you're not answering me.""
Denise went quiet.
Then she said:
"Your father believed Adrian was interested in you because of the family trust.""
Naomi stopped breathing.
"What trust?""
"The trust your father established before he died.""
Naomi stared at the dark television screen.
She remembered signing documents after her father's funeral.
Her mother had explained that some paperwork was necessary to transfer and protect her inheritance.
Naomi had been grieving.
She hadn't asked many questions.
"How much money was in it?""
"I don't know the exact amount now. Your father's attorney managed it.""
Naomi swallowed.
"Was Adrian involved?""
"Not initially. But after you started dating, he began asking your father questions about your financial future.""
Naomi's fingers went cold.
"Mom, when did this happen?""
"About six months before your engagement.""
Naomi stared at the floor.
Six months.
She remembered their first date.
Adrian had taken her to a beautiful restaurant and asked about her childhood.
He had remembered her favorite flowers.
He had told her she deserved a man who would never make her feel invisible.
She had thought he was different.
Now she wondered which parts of that evening had been genuine.
"Did Dad tell you he was worried?""
Denise began crying.
"He told me something before he died. He said Adrian was very interested in the family assets. He wasn't sure whether his intentions were sincere.""
Naomi covered her mouth.
"Why did you let me marry him?""
"I tried to speak to you.""
Naomi remembered.
Her mother had once asked whether she was rushing into the engagement.
Naomi had accused her of being overprotective.
Denise had never raised the subject again.
"I thought I knew him," Naomi whispered.
"I know, baby.""
Naomi began crying.
"I defended him.""
"I know.""
"I told everyone you didn't understand our relationship.""
Denise's voice broke.
"You were in love.""
Naomi pressed her hand against her forehead.
"Was Dad right?""
Denise paused.
"There's something else.""
Naomi looked up.
"What?""
"Your father left a letter with his attorney. He instructed him to give it to you if there was ever evidence that someone was trying to interfere with your inheritance.""
Naomi stood immediately.
"Where is it?""
"At the law office. I have the attorney's details.""
Naomi reached for a pen.
"Send them to me.""
The following morning, Naomi arrived at Daniel's office before nine.
She placed her phone on the desk.
"My mother says Adrian knew about my father's trust before we got married.""
Daniel looked up.
"Did she provide documentation?""
"She says my father's attorney has a letter.""
Daniel sat forward.
"What's the attorney's name?""
Naomi gave him the information.
Daniel made a note.
"We'll contact him and verify the trust structure. Do you know whether your husband ever had access to those records?""
"No.""
"Did you ever authorize him to manage your inheritance?""
"No.""
Daniel nodded.
"Then we'll need to examine the trust documents and the history of any requests made on your behalf.""
Naomi looked at him.
"Daniel, what if he married me because of the money?""
He didn't answer immediately.
"That is a serious possibility. But we need evidence before drawing that conclusion.""
Naomi nodded.
Her phone vibrated.
A message from Simone.
The attorney's office has confirmed the appointment. They found your father's original letter.
Naomi looked up.
"Can we go today?""
Daniel checked his schedule.
"Yes.""
At 11:45 a.m., Naomi and Daniel entered the office of Harold Bennett, the attorney who had handled her father's estate.
Harold was a silver-haired man in his late sixties.
He stood when Naomi entered.
"Naomi. It's been a long time.""
She shook his hand.
"Thank you for seeing me.""
He gestured toward two chairs.
"I was sorry to hear about your father's passing. He spoke very highly of you.""
Naomi smiled faintly.
"Thank you.""
Harold opened a locked cabinet.
After searching through several folders, he removed a sealed envelope.
The paper had yellowed slightly.
Her name was written across the front in her father's handwriting.
Naomi's eyes filled immediately.
"That's his handwriting.""
Harold placed it gently on the table.
"He left specific instructions regarding this letter. I was not to release it unless there was credible evidence of an attempt to interfere with your inheritance.""
Daniel nodded.
"We have documents concerning disputed financial authorizations and a proposed property transaction.""
Harold examined the copies.
His expression became serious.
"Then I believe it's time.""
Naomi opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
She recognized the familiar slant of her father's writing.
My dearest Naomi,
If you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.
Her hands began trembling.
She continued.
I want you to understand that the money and property I leave behind are not the most important things in your life. They are simply the result of years of work, sacrifice, and planning.
I have protected them because I want you to have choices.
Naomi wiped her eyes.
The letter continued.
There is one person I want you to be careful about. Marcus Hill approached me regarding an investment opportunity. He later introduced me to a young man named Adrian Carter.
Naomi stopped.
Daniel looked at her.
She continued.
Adrian appeared charming, ambitious, and interested in business. However, during our conversations, he asked unusually specific questions about your inheritance, your future financial rights, and the property I intended to leave you.
Naomi felt sick.
Her father had noticed.
He had noticed before she ever knew Adrian existed.
The next paragraph made her grip the paper.
I refused to provide him with any confidential information. I also instructed my attorney to ensure that your inheritance would remain under independent management.
Then came the final section.
Naomi, I do not know whether Adrian's interest in you is genuine. I sincerely hope it is. But if you ever discover that he has used your trust, your name, or your signature without permission, do not confront him alone.
There is a second set of documents.
Those documents explain why I refused to do business with Marcus Hill.
Naomi stopped reading.
She looked at Harold.
"Where are they?""
Harold closed the cabinet.
"In the original estate archive.""
"Can we see them?""
"Yes. But there's something you should understand first.""
He opened another folder.
"Your father wasn't simply refusing to invest with Marcus. He suspected Marcus was using other people's names to secure property transactions.""
Naomi stared at him.
"What?""
Harold nodded.
"Your father's records indicate that Marcus had approached several investors using financial arrangements that were never fully disclosed.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Did your father preserve evidence?""
"Yes.""
Harold removed a document.
At the top was the name of a company.
Naomi recognized it.
It was the same company listed on the bank correspondence Adrian had used.
She felt her chest tighten.
"That's Adrian's company.""
Harold shook his head.
"No. It was Marcus Hill's company first.""
Naomi looked at the date.
The company had been established years before she met Adrian.
She turned another page.
There were records of a proposed investment involving her father's property.
And beneath the original agreement was a note in her father's handwriting.
*DECLINED. UNDISCLOSED BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP. DO NOT PROCEED.*
Naomi looked at Daniel.
"Marcus was involved before Adrian even met me.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"It appears so.""
Harold reached into the folder again.
"There is one more document.""
He placed it on the table.
It was a photograph.
A younger Adrian stood beside Marcus outside a commercial property.
The photograph was dated almost eight months before Naomi's first date with Adrian.
Naomi stared at it.
Then she noticed the woman standing beside them.
Her breath caught.
It was Vanessa.
But the most disturbing detail wasn't Vanessa's presence.
It was the handwritten caption on the back.
Harold turned the photograph over.
Naomi read the words.
*THE PLAN IS TO APPROACH THE DAUGHTER AFTER THE FATHER REFUSES THE DEAL.*
She looked up.
"Who wrote this?""
Harold examined the handwriting.
"Your father.""
Naomi's eyes filled.
Daniel carefully placed the photograph inside a protective sleeve.
"Naomi, we need to investigate the relationship between these individuals and determine whether the marriage was connected to a financial scheme.""
Naomi stared at the photograph.
She had spent years believing she had failed at marriage because she hadn't been enough.
Not beautiful enough.
Not patient enough.
Not understanding enough.
Now she was discovering that the person she had built her life around might have entered it with a purpose she had never imagined.
Her phone vibrated.
Adrian.
A new message appeared.
I know you've seen your father's letter.
Naomi looked at the screen.
Another message arrived.
You need to understand that your father wasn't innocent either.
Then a third.
Ask Harold what happened to the original trust agreement.
Naomi slowly turned toward the attorney.
Harold's expression changed.
He closed the folder.
"Naomi," he said quietly, "there is something your father never told you about the trust.""
She gripped the edge of the table.
"What?""
Harold looked at Daniel.
Then back at her.
"Your father didn't leave you the inheritance directly.""
Naomi's heart began pounding.
"Then who controls it?""
Harold took a breath.
"Your daughter, Zuri.""
The room went silent.
Naomi stared at him.
Her father had placed the inheritance in a trust for Zuri.
And suddenly, Adrian's desperation to reach his daughter made a terrifying kind of sense.
But Harold wasn't finished.
He opened the final page of the original agreement.
"There's another condition," he said.
"One that your father added specifically because he was worried about Adrian.""
Naomi leaned forward.
Harold pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
"If anyone attempts to obtain control of the trust through fraud, coercion, or unauthorized representation, the trustee must immediately review the beneficiary's protections.""
Naomi looked at the words.
Then she whispered:
"What does that mean?""
Harold met her eyes.
"It means Adrian may have been trying to gain access to money that was never yours to give him in the first place.""
And for the first time, Naomi understood the real reason her husband had suddenly become so desperate to regain access to Zuri.
It wasn't simply because he missed being a father.
It was because he had discovered that the little girl he barely made time for might control the one thing he had been trying to obtain all along.
May you like
The inheritance.
And now Naomi knew exactly what she had to protect.
