Chapter 8: The Mother He Tried to Discredit

The family court hearing was scheduled for Monday morning.

Naomi spent the weekend preparing.

Not because she wanted to fight Adrian.

Because she wanted to walk into that courtroom knowing she had done everything possible to protect Zuri.

On Sunday evening, she sat at the dining table with Simone.

Three folders were arranged neatly in front of her.

The first contained financial records.

The second contained the disputed signature and correspondence.

The third contained the messages, school report, and evidence concerning Adrian's statements about her parenting.

Simone placed a glass of water beside her.

"You've been reading those documents for hours.""

Naomi rubbed her forehead.

"I need to understand everything.""

"You don't have to memorize every page. Daniel will present the relevant evidence.""

Naomi looked up.

"What if Adrian tells them I'm unstable?""

Simone pulled out the chair opposite her.

"Then he will have to support that claim with evidence.""

Naomi looked down.

"I cried in front of him. I shouted sometimes. I begged him to come home.""

"That doesn't make you an unfit mother.""

Naomi's eyes filled.

"I don't want Zuri hearing people describe her mother like that.""

Simone reached across the table.

"Then don't let his words become the way you see yourself.""

Naomi looked at her assistant.

For three years, Simone had watched her arrange business meetings, attend charity events, smile for photographs, and pretend everything at home was perfect.

She had never once asked Naomi to prove that she deserved respect.

"Thank you," Naomi whispered.

Simone squeezed her hand.

"Now eat something.""

Naomi laughed through her tears.

"You're impossible.""

"And you're still not eating.""

Monday morning arrived with heavy rain.

Naomi wore a tailored ivory suit and nude heels.

Her curls were styled neatly, and her gold earrings caught the light as she walked through the courthouse entrance.

She looked composed.

But her hands were cold.

Daniel walked beside her.

"Remember, answer the questions directly. If you don't know something, say so. Don't guess.""

Naomi nodded.

"Understood.""

Simone followed with the folders.

As they approached the courtroom, Adrian appeared at the opposite end of the corridor.

He wore a charcoal suit and an expensive watch.

Vanessa stood several feet behind him.

For a moment, Adrian simply stared at Naomi.

Then he walked toward her.

"Naomi.""

She didn't stop.

He stepped into her path.

"Can we talk?""

Daniel moved forward.

"Any communication should be directed through counsel.""

Adrian ignored him.

"You're really going to do this?""

Naomi looked at her husband.

His eyes were tired.

His beard was slightly untrimmed.

For one brief second, she remembered the man who had once danced with her in their kitchen while Zuri slept upstairs.

Then she remembered the messages.

The forged signature.

The school report.

The proposed sale.

She looked away.

"Please move.""

Adrian's expression changed.

"You're acting like I did something terrible.""

Naomi stopped.

Her voice was quiet.

"You told our daughter's school that I was dangerous.""

"I was worried.""

"You tried to remove me from her pickup list.""

"I was protecting her.""

"You signed my name on a financial document.""

Adrian's face tightened.

"That's not what happened.""

Naomi looked at him.

"Then explain it to the judge.""

She walked into the courtroom.

The hearing began shortly afterward.

Adrian's attorney presented his client's concerns.

He described Adrian as a devoted father who had been unable to contact his daughter.

He argued that Naomi had abruptly left the marital residence and had restricted communication.

Then he referred to the school report.

"Your Honor, Mr. Carter has serious concerns regarding the mother's emotional stability.""

Naomi sat still.

The attorney continued.

"There are statements from a family member and school personnel describing behavior that raises questions about the child's emotional environment.""

Daniel stood.

"Your Honor, we object to the characterization of these allegations as established facts. We have documentation that places the report in a very different context.""

The judge looked toward him.

"Proceed.""

Daniel presented the relevant timeline.

He showed the messages Naomi had sent before leaving.

He showed her request that communication be handled through counsel.

He presented the disputed financial authorization and the records indicating that it had been submitted through an account associated with Adrian.

Then he addressed the school report.

"The mother's departure occurred after she discovered financial transactions she had not authorized. Shortly afterward, the father submitted a report questioning her parenting ability.""

The judge examined the documents.

"Mr. Carter, did you submit this report?""

Adrian's attorney stood.

"My client acknowledges communicating concerns to the school.""

The judge looked at Adrian.

"Did you personally request that the mother's pickup authorization be removed?""

Adrian shifted in his chair.

"I wanted the school to be cautious.""

"That was not my question.""

Adrian swallowed.

"Yes.""

The judge turned to Naomi.

"Mrs. Carter, did you intend to prevent your daughter from having a relationship with her father?""

Naomi stood.

"No, Your Honor.""

"Then why did you change your telephone number?""

Naomi took a breath.

"Because I received repeated calls and messages after I told my husband that communication should go through legal counsel. I needed space to make decisions without being pressured.""

"Are you willing to support appropriate contact between the father and child?""

"Yes, Your Honor. I want Zuri to have a healthy relationship with her father. But I want it to happen through a safe, structured arrangement.""

The judge nodded.

"And the financial dispute?""

Naomi looked toward Daniel.

Then back at the bench.

"I discovered documents bearing a signature I did not authorize. I also discovered that money had been transferred from our joint accounts. I am asking for those matters to be investigated.

I don't want to take what belongs to him. I don't want him taking what belongs to me.""

Her voice trembled.

"I just want the truth.""

The courtroom fell quiet.

Adrian's attorney requested an opportunity to respond.

He argued that the recording provided by Vanessa was incomplete and had not yet been independently authenticated.

Daniel agreed that further verification was necessary.

He did not claim otherwise.

Instead, he presented a copy of the school report and the messages exchanged between Adrian and Naomi.

The judge reviewed the documents.

Then she addressed both parties.

"The court is not going to determine every disputed financial issue today. Those matters require further examination.""

She paused.

"However, the child's welfare cannot become a tool in an adult financial disagreement.""

Naomi felt her throat tighten.

The judge continued.

"Until further review, I am ordering a temporary, structured parenting arrangement. Communication regarding the child must occur through the designated legal channels, and neither parent should involve the child in accusations against the other.""

Naomi nodded.

It wasn't a complete victory.

But it was a boundary.

One Adrian could no longer dismiss with a phone call.

As the hearing concluded, the judge made one additional observation.

"Both parents are expected to preserve relevant records and avoid unilateral changes to the child's school or medical arrangements.""

Daniel leaned toward Naomi.

"We'll review the written order when it is issued.""

Naomi nodded.

She didn't smile.

She simply breathed.

Outside the courtroom, Adrian approached her again.

This time, Vanessa wasn't with him.

"Naomi.""

She turned.

"What?""

He looked toward Daniel.

"Can I have five minutes?""

Daniel answered before Naomi could.

"Any substantive discussion can be arranged through counsel.""

Adrian ignored him.

"I just want to know if you're happy now.""

Naomi stared at him.

"Happy?""

"You got what you wanted.""

She almost laughed.

"No, Adrian. I wanted a husband who came home. I wanted a father who remembered his daughter's school performances. I wanted to be able to ask questions without being threatened.""

He looked away.

"I made mistakes.""

Naomi nodded.

"Yes.""

"I can fix them.""

She looked directly into his eyes.

"That's what you said every time I cried.""

Adrian stepped closer.

"Please. Think about Zuri.""

Naomi's face softened for a moment.

"I do. Every single day.""

Then she walked away.

That evening, Naomi returned to the temporary residence.

Zuri was sitting on the floor, watching a cartoon.

"Mama!""

Naomi dropped her handbag and opened her arms.

Zuri ran toward her.

"Did you go see the judge?""

Naomi smiled.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

"Did you tell her about Bunny?""

Naomi laughed.

"Not yet.""

Zuri held up her stuffed rabbit.

"Bunny says he wants everyone to be nice.""

Naomi kissed her forehead.

"That's a very good idea.""

Later, after putting Zuri to bed, Naomi stood alone in the kitchen.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Adrian.

The judge may have listened to you today, but you don't know everything.

Naomi stared at it.

Another message arrived.

Ask your mother what happened before we got married.

Naomi froze.

Her mother?

What did Adrian mean?

She called her immediately.

Her mother answered on the third ring.

"Baby?""

Naomi's voice was quiet.

"Mom, I need to ask you something.""

"What's wrong?""

"Did Adrian ever contact you about our finances before we got married?""

There was a long silence.

Then her mother said something Naomi hadn't expected.

"Naomi, I was hoping you would never have to find out.""

Naomi gripped the counter.

"Find out what?""

May you like

Her mother's voice trembled.

"Your husband didn't meet you by accident.""
