Chapter 6: The Blue Folder

“Don't let him leave with the blue folder.””

I read the sentence again.

Then a third time.

My father's handwriting hadn't changed much from the birthday cards I barely remembered receiving. The capital letters leaned slightly to the right, and he always pressed too hard when writing the final line of a sentence.

But the message itself made no sense.

I had never heard of a blue folder.

I had no idea why Bruno would want it.

And I couldn't understand how my father had anticipated that Bruno might be at the hospital on the same night I arrived.

Elena noticed the envelope in my hand.

“Lucía, what's wrong?””

I handed it to her.

She read the sentence, then looked at me.

“Do you know what this means?””

“No.””

“Have you met Bruno before?””

I shook my head.

“Not until tonight.””

Elena returned the letter to the table.

“Then we won't make assumptions. Right now, I'm going to ask the charge nurse to secure your personal belongings. If anyone comes asking for that envelope, they won't be allowed to take it.””

I swallowed.

“Could Bruno hurt my baby?””

Elena's expression softened.

“I have no reason to believe he's going to hurt you or your baby. But he has no right to enter this room or interfere with your treatment. We'll make sure of that.””

She adjusted the monitor and checked the line attached to my hand.

I tried to focus on her movements.

The room was quiet except for the beeping monitor and the muted voices in the hallway.

Then a sharp argument erupted outside.

“I'm his son!”” Bruno shouted.

“You can't keep me away from him!””

A second voice responded.

“You've been asked to wait, sir.””

“I don't care what I've been asked!””

Elena walked toward the door.

“Stay here, Lucía.””

She stepped into the corridor, leaving the door partly open.

I could see a narrow section of the hallway.

Bruno stood beside the reception desk, no longer using the wheelchair. His mother was beside him, her red blouse wrinkled and her handbag clutched against her chest.

Ricardo faced them with a thick blue folder tucked beneath his arm.

My heart began pounding.

The folder.

Bruno pointed at it.

“Give me that.””

Ricardo held it against his side.

“This document belongs to the hospital's legal department.””

“My father told you to give it to me.””

“Your father specifically instructed us not to release it without verification.””

Bruno laughed bitterly.

“Verification? I'm his son!””

“And the documents inside concern more than one person.””

Patricia stepped forward.

“Ricardo, this is a family matter. You have no reason to involve outsiders.””

“Your husband asked us to preserve the file until certain conditions were met.””

“Those conditions have been met,” Bruno snapped.

“Lucía is here. Now hand it over.””

I froze.

He knew my name.

He knew about the instruction.

And he knew the blue folder existed.

Elena appeared in the doorway, blocking my view.

“Lucía, please lie back.””

“What's in the folder?””

“I don't know.””

“But Bruno knows.””

Elena looked toward the corridor.

“Then the hospital will determine what he's entitled to know.””

She closed the door.

I stared at the ceiling, trying to slow my breathing.

My father had left a warning about Bruno, but he hadn't explained why.

Was it about the money?

The maternity fund?

My mother's death?

Or something else entirely?

A contraction tightened across my abdomen, forcing me to abandon the questions.

I gripped the rail and followed Elena's breathing instructions.

When the pain subsided, Dr. Morales returned to check my progress.

“Lucía, you're progressing,” she said.

“We're keeping a close eye on you and the baby.””

“Is there something wrong?””

“I'm not going to speculate. We'll continue monitoring both of you and respond to what we find.””

I nodded.

I wanted certainty.

I wanted someone to promise that my baby would arrive safely, that my father hadn't returned from the past only to bring more pain, and that Bruno's presence in this hospital was a coincidence.

But nobody could promise me those things.

So I focused on the only thing I could control.

I kept breathing.

A few minutes later, the door opened again.

This time, it was Ricardo.

He entered alone and shut the door behind him.

“Lucía, I need to explain something about that folder.””

Elena immediately looked at him.

“Keep it brief.””

“I will.””

Ricardo placed a single sheet of paper on the table.

“The blue folder contains records connected to the hospital's maternity emergency fund. Some are financial documents. Others are legal correspondence.””

“Why would Bruno want them?””

“His family has a connection to the foundation that helped finance this wing.””

“That doesn't explain why my father mentioned him.””

Ricardo paused.

“Your father was concerned that certain documents might be altered or removed before you had a chance to see them.””

My stomach tightened.

“Altered by whom?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Does the folder say anything about my mother?””

Ricardo looked at me carefully.

“Yes.””

I sat up despite Elena's gentle warning.

“What does it say?””

“It contains correspondence about the medical care your mother received years ago. Your father believed there were discrepancies between the information given to your family and the records preserved by the hospital.””

I felt as if someone had opened a window in winter.

“Are you saying the hospital lied to us?””

“I'm saying that your father raised questions. The records need to be reviewed before anyone can make that determination.””

I looked at the silver bracelet around my wrist.

My mother had worn it until the final days of her life.

She'd kept every photograph of my father hidden in a drawer, yet she'd never thrown them away.

I'd always assumed she was too hurt to forget him.

Now I wondered if she'd been waiting for him to explain something he had promised her.

“Why didn't he tell me any of this before?””

Ricardo lowered his eyes.

“That is something only your father can answer.””

I let out a bitter laugh.

“He's very good at not answering questions.””

Ricardo accepted the remark without defending him.

Then he continued.

“The folder also contains an instruction concerning you and your child.””

I looked at him.

“What instruction?””

He hesitated.

“Your father requested that the hospital establish a protected account for your baby's future medical expenses. The money was transferred years ago, but the account cannot be accessed until the legal department verifies your identity and reviews the accompanying documents.””

I stared at him.

“My father set aside money for my baby?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Ricardo didn't answer immediately.

“Enough to provide substantial support for his medical needs and future care.””

I shook my head.

“This is impossible. My father left us with nothing.””

“I understand why you feel that way.””

“No, you don't.””

The words came out sharper than I'd intended.

I looked away, ashamed of the tears filling my eyes.

“My mother worked two jobs. She skipped meals so I could eat. When she died, I had to choose between paying the electricity bill and buying groceries. I spent years thinking my father had forgotten we existed.””

Ricardo remained silent.

“And now you're telling me he had money sitting in an account while we struggled?””

“I can't explain his decisions, Lucía. I can only tell you what the records show.””

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

I didn't know whether I wanted to scream or cry.

Perhaps both.

Then Ricardo's phone rang.

He checked the screen and answered.

“Señor Herrera.””

I recognized the voice immediately, even though I had heard it only through a speaker earlier.

My father's voice.

“Ricardo, has Bruno seen the folder?””

“No, sir. He has demanded it, but we haven't released it.””

“Good. Keep it secured.””

“Sir, Lucía has read your letter.””

Silence.

Then my father's voice softened.

“Is she all right?””

“She is receiving medical care.””

“Can I speak to her?””

Ricardo looked at me.

I shook my head before he could answer.

Not yet.

I wasn't ready to hear my father's voice after all these years, especially not while I was lying in a hospital bed preparing to give birth.

Ricardo understood.

“She isn't ready to speak with you.””

My father exhaled.

“Tell her I understand.””

I almost laughed.

He understood?

He had missed nearly every important moment of my life. He hadn't been there when I graduated, when my mother died, or when I learned how to survive on my own.

And now he understood that I wasn't ready to speak to him?

“Sir,” Ricardo continued, “Bruno is becoming increasingly aggressive. He insists the folder belongs to him.””

My father's voice hardened.

“Then you need to hear me carefully. Bruno has no authority to remove that folder. If he tries again, contact the police and preserve the security footage.””

“Understood.””

“And Ricardo?””

“Yes?””

“If Patricia is still there, don't let her near Lucía.””

The call ended.

I stared at Ricardo.

“Why did he mention Bruno and my mother in the same instruction?””

Ricardo collected the sheet of paper.

“I don't know.””

“Do you think Bruno had something to do with what happened to her?””

“No,” he said firmly.

“I don't have evidence of that, and I won't encourage you to believe something simply because the circumstances are frightening.””

His answer should have reassured me.

Instead, it reminded me how many unanswered questions remained.

A sudden shout came from the corridor.

“I'm not leaving without it!””

Ricardo turned toward the door.

Then another voice rose above the commotion.

Patricia.

“You promised your father you would protect this family!””

Bruno answered so quietly that I could barely hear him.

“I'm trying to.””

“Then get the folder!””

Footsteps approached.

Elena moved between me and the door.

Ricardo stepped into the corridor and pulled the door shut behind him.

Through the narrow glass panel, I saw Bruno approach the nurse's station. He wasn't sitting in the wheelchair anymore. He walked straight toward Ricardo, his face flushed with anger.

“Give me the folder,” Bruno demanded.

“No.””

“You have no idea what you're protecting.””

Ricardo stood his ground.

“Then explain it.””

Bruno glanced toward my room.

For a moment, his eyes met mine through the glass.

His expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not surprise.

Fear.

He looked back at Ricardo and lowered his voice.

“If Lucía reads those documents, she'll destroy everything my father has spent thirty years building.””

Ricardo didn't move.

“Then perhaps you should explain why.””

Bruno opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, a uniformed police officer stepped into the corridor.

“Señor Bruno Herrera?””

Bruno turned.

“Who wants to know?””

The officer held up a small evidence bag containing a folded piece of paper.

“We received a report concerning the incident at reception. During our initial review, we also found something in the hospital's records that requires your explanation.””

Bruno's face drained of color.

Patricia clutched his arm.

“What records?””

The officer looked directly at Bruno.

“An authorization bearing your signature, dated the week Lucía's mother died.””

I stopped breathing.

May you like

The officer continued.

“And according to the document, you were the person who requested that her original medical file be removed from the hospital archive.””
