Chapter 4: The Father Who Knew My Name

“Your father?””

Bruno's voice cracked on the last word.

For the first time since entering the hospital, he looked less like a man accustomed to getting whatever he wanted and more like someone who had just discovered that the floor beneath him wasn't solid.

The administrator, a gray-haired man named Ricardo Salcedo, closed the folder halfway.

“Yes, Bruno. Your father personally requested that we contact him if Lucía Herrera arrived here in labor.””

Bruno shook his head.

“That doesn't make any sense. My father doesn't even know her.””

Ricardo studied him for a moment.

“Are you certain about that?””

Bruno's mother, Patricia, released a sharp breath.

“Of course he's certain! My husband has business to attend to. He doesn't spend his time following random women into hospitals.””

Ricardo didn't respond immediately.

Instead, he turned to the security guard.

“Has the police been called?””

“Not yet, sir. I was waiting for your instructions.””

“Call them. We have a report of physical aggression against a nurse and interference with emergency care.””

Patricia's mouth fell open.

“You cannot be serious!””

Ricardo looked at her handbag, which was now hanging crookedly from her elbow.

“I'm completely serious.””

Bruno stepped forward.

“Mr. Salcedo, you need to listen to me. My mother was defending me. That woman deliberately caused a scene so she could get special treatment.””

Ricardo's expression hardened.

“Your mother tried to pay a nurse to put you ahead of a woman in active labor. You stood up from a wheelchair, walked across the reception area, and accused that woman of faking her distress.””

“I never said she was faking!””

“You said she was making a spectacle to steal your place. Several witnesses heard you.””

Bruno looked toward the waiting area.

A man sitting beneath a wall-mounted television lowered his eyes. A woman holding a toddler stared openly at him.

For the first time, Bruno seemed aware that his behavior had an audience.

Patricia grabbed her son's sleeve.

“Don't answer him. Your father will fix this.””

Ricardo opened the folder again.

“That's precisely the problem, señora. Your husband asked us to follow a specific protocol. He was very clear that no member of his family was to interfere with it.””

Bruno stared at him.

“What protocol?””

Ricardo glanced toward the maternity corridor.

“That's not a conversation we should have here.””

“Then where?””

“In the administrator's office. After the police have taken statements.””

Patricia gave a disbelieving laugh.

“You're threatening us because my son needed a wheelchair?””

“No,” Ricardo replied.

“I'm responding to what your son and you actually did.””

She leaned closer, lowering her voice as though she could intimidate him more effectively in private.

“You have worked here for twenty-two years. Do you want to throw that away over a misunderstanding?””

Ricardo's fingers tightened around the folder.

“I've worked here for twenty-two years, señora. I've watched families arrive at this hospital terrified that they might lose someone they love. I've seen people sell their belongings to pay for treatment. I've held the hands of parents who didn't know whether their children would survive the night.””

He paused.

“And I've never seen a donation receipt turn into a medical license.””

Patricia's cheeks flushed.

Bruno looked away.

Then Ricardo's phone rang.

He checked the screen and immediately answered.

“Señor Herrera.””

A man's voice came through the speaker, low and controlled.

“Ricardo, I'm told Lucía has arrived.””

“Yes, sir. She's being assessed by the obstetric team.””

“Is she safe?””

Ricardo hesitated.

“She is receiving care now. There was an incident at reception.””

“What kind of incident?””

“Your son and wife obstructed her access to the counter. Your wife also grabbed a nurse.””

Silence followed.

Then the man spoke again.

“Put me on speaker.””

Ricardo did.

“Bruno,” the voice said.

Bruno went completely still.

“Dad?””

“Tell me what happened.””

Bruno glanced at Patricia.

“She was blocking the reception area. Mom and I were trying to get help, and the nurse started insulting us.””

“That's not what I asked. Did you stand up from the wheelchair?””

Bruno swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Did you walk?””

“Yes, but—”

“Did you tell a woman in labor to sit on the floor?””

Bruno's face turned red.

“Dad, you don't understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

Bruno opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Patricia snatched at the phone.

“Your son was being treated terribly! I offered to pay for faster service, and they humiliated me in front of everyone.””

Her husband's response was immediate.

“You offered money to a nurse while a woman was in labor?””

“I was trying to help my son!””

“And what did you think that woman was trying to do? Win a prize?””

Patricia recoiled as though he'd slapped her.

Bruno stepped toward the phone.

“Dad, why are you even involved with this woman? Ricardo says you gave instructions about her. Who is she?””

His father didn't answer right away.

Instead, he asked Ricardo a question.

“Has the obstetrician examined her?””

“Yes, sir.””

“Good. I want her to receive every medically necessary intervention without delay. No special favors. No interference from anyone.””

“Understood.””

“And Ricardo?””

“Yes?””

“Do not let my family use my name to intimidate the staff.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, the reception area remained silent.

Bruno stared at the dark screen.

Patricia looked as if she'd forgotten how to breathe.

Then she turned toward Ricardo.

“What exactly is going on?””

Ricardo slipped the phone into his pocket.

“That's a question you should ask your husband.””

He started toward the maternity corridor.

Bruno followed him for two steps before the guard moved into his path.

“Sir, you'll need to remain here until we've completed the initial report.””

“Get out of my way!””

“I'm not going to ask you again.””

Bruno stopped.

His mother seized his arm.

“We're leaving. Right now.””

“You can't leave before giving your statement,” the guard said.

Patricia glared at him.

“Watch me.””

She spun toward the exit, but Ricardo's voice stopped her.

“Señora, there's one more thing.””

She turned slowly.

Ricardo opened the folder to the last page.

“The instruction from your husband included a name. He told us that if Lucía Herrera ever came here, we were to make sure the hospital's legal department was available.””

Bruno frowned.

“Why would my father care about her legal paperwork?””

Ricardo looked at him.

“Because he believes your family owes her something.””

Patricia's handbag slipped slightly down her arm.

Bruno stared at Ricardo, then toward the corridor where I had disappeared.

“What does my family owe her?””

Ricardo closed the folder.

“That's what your father intends to tell you.””

Then he walked away.

And for the first time, Bruno had no clever remark, no demand, and no threat to offer.

He simply stood beside the wheelchair he'd used to make himself look helpless, wondering why his own father had chosen to protect a woman he'd never met.

Or so he thought.
