Chapter 4: The Call He Couldn't Ignore

Malcolm’s phone began vibrating against the dining table.

Neither of them moved at first.

The sound was small, almost insignificant, but it cut through the silence with the persistence of something that refused to be ignored. The phone shuddered against the polished black surface, stopped, and started again.

Nia looked at it.

Malcolm looked at her.

“Answer it,” she said.

He reached for the phone.

She stepped forward.

“Put it on speaker.””

His hand stopped above the screen.

“Nia, don’t.””

“Why?””

“It’s a private call.””

“Of course it is.””

He picked up the phone and turned away, but not before she saw the name displayed across the screen.

*DARIUS COLE.*

She knew that name.

Darius was Malcolm’s business partner, the man who had stood beside him at the launch of their real estate investment company three years earlier. He had attended their anniversary dinner, toasted their marriage, and once called Nia the person who kept Malcolm grounded.

She had liked him.

That memory now tasted bitter.

“Answer it,” she repeated.

Malcolm pressed the screen and brought the phone to his ear.

“What?””

His tone was so sharp that Nia almost stepped back.

A muffled voice answered from the other end.

Malcolm walked toward the windows.

“I told you not to call me here.””

Nia's fingers tightened around the envelope.

The voice continued.

“No,” Malcolm said.

“Not tonight.””

A pause.

Then his shoulders stiffened.

“I said I would handle it.””

Nia took two deliberate steps closer.

Malcolm glanced over his shoulder and lowered his voice.

“You need to listen to me. I have not told her anything.””

The room seemed to lose its air.

Nia stopped walking.

Malcolm realized what he had said at almost the same instant she did. His eyes closed briefly, and his free hand curled into a fist.

On the other end, Darius spoke again.

Malcolm's expression turned murderous.

“Don't tell me what I need to do.””

He listened.

Then he said, “You promised me we had until the end of the month.””

Another pause.

“What do you mean, the deadline changed?””

Nia could hear her own heartbeat.

Malcolm turned his back to her completely.

“No. Absolutely not. You cannot do that now.””

The conversation was no longer about business as she understood it. He sounded less like a man discussing an investment and more like someone negotiating with a person who had discovered the exact location of his weakest point.

“Darius, if you move that money without my authorization, I swear to God—”

He stopped.

Listened.

His face changed.

The anger vanished, leaving naked alarm.

“Don't you dare bring her into this.””

Nia's breath caught.

Her?

Was he talking about her?

Malcolm turned around. Their eyes met.

He knew she had heard.

“I'm coming over,” he said into the phone.

“No. Not tomorrow. Tonight.””

He ended the call before Darius could respond.

For a moment, he stood motionless, the phone pressed against his palm.

Nia spoke first.

“What money?””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“You heard me. What money is Darius threatening to move?””

“He isn't threatening anything.””

“I heard you.””

“You heard half a conversation.””

“Then give me the other half!””

He shoved the phone into his pocket.

“It's a business dispute.””

“Between you and your business partner?””

“Yes.””

“About money from our joint account?””

He didn't answer quickly enough.

Nia's expression hardened.

“That's what I thought.””

“It's not as simple as you're making it.””

“Then stop making it impossible to understand!””

Malcolm walked toward the kitchen, yanked open a cabinet, and reached for a glass. His movements were abrupt, almost clumsy. He filled it with water, drank too quickly, and set it down so hard that water spilled over the rim.

Nia followed him.

“Did Darius know about the transfer?””

“I'm not discussing this with you while you're shouting at me.””

She stared at him in disbelief.

“You just took a call in our home and told someone you hadn't told your wife anything. You told him not to bring me into it. Now you're pretending I'm the one making this difficult?””

Malcolm wiped the water from the counter with his palm.

“I made a mistake.””

The admission silenced her.

She had expected another denial. Another accusation. Perhaps another attempt to reach the door.

Instead, he stood with his back to her and acknowledged something without being forced to.

Nia's voice dropped.

“What mistake?””

He turned.

“Not everything that happens in a marriage is about the marriage.””

“That may be the most insulting thing you've said to me tonight.””

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

He pressed his fingers against his temples.

“I made a decision. I believed I could correct it before it affected us.””

“And now?””

“Now it's become complicated.””

“Because Darius knows?””

Malcolm looked at her.

“Because Darius has stopped doing what he promised.””

Nia felt cold creep along her arms.

“What did he promise?””

He shook his head.

“I can't.””

She slapped the envelope onto the counter.

“You can. You're choosing not to.””

Malcolm's jaw flexed.

“Do you want the truth? Fine. There is a problem with one of our investments.

Money was moved into an account it shouldn't have gone into. I believed the transfer could be reversed. Darius told me he had everything under control, and I trusted him.””

Nia searched his face.

“How much money?””

He looked away.

“How much, Malcolm?””

“It's not all gone.””

Her stomach dropped.

“That's not an answer.””

“No, it isn't.””

“Then give me one!””

He gripped the edge of the counter.

“I don't have the final numbers.””

“Because you don't know where our money is?””

“Because I don't know how much of it can be recovered!””

The words burst out of him.

Silence followed.

Nia stared at her husband. The expensive shirt, the designer watch, the carefully maintained image of a successful man suddenly seemed like props in a play neither of them had agreed to perform.

“You used our savings,” she whispered.

“I intended to replace it.””

“You used our savings without telling me.””

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You keep saying that!””

“Because it's true!””

“No. It's an excuse. You made a decision that belonged to both of us, and then you decided I didn't deserve to know because you thought you could clean up after yourself.””

His face tightened.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From losing money? Or from finding out who you really are?””

He recoiled.

Nia immediately regretted the sharpness of the words, but not their meaning.

Malcolm stared at her, his eyes glistening with anger and something close to shame.

“You think I'm a bad man.””

“I think you've done something that could change both our lives, and I don't even know the full extent of it.””

He looked down.

Then his phone vibrated again.

This time, a message appeared on the screen before he could turn it over.

Nia saw only a few words.

*THE DOCUMENTS HAVE TO BE SIGNED TONIGHT.*

Malcolm snatched up the phone.

“Who sent that?”” she demanded.

“Nia—”

“Who?””

“Darius.””

“What documents?””

He shook his head.

“I have to go.””

She stared at him.

“You just said you weren't leaving.””

“I need to meet him.””

“No.””

The word came out before she had consciously decided to say it.

Malcolm's eyes narrowed.

“You don't get to tell me where I can go.””

“I'm not telling you where to go. I'm telling you that if you walk out of here without explaining what those documents are, you are making another decision that affects our marriage without allowing me to participate.””

“This isn't about your permission.””

“Then stop treating me like the last person entitled to the truth!””

He grabbed his jacket from the back of a chair.

Nia moved between him and the hallway.

He stopped short.

“Move.””

“Tell me what you're signing.””

“Move, Nia.””

“Are you signing away our money?””

“No.””

“Are you signing away our property?””

His silence was brief.

But it was real.

Nia felt something inside her collapse.

“Malcolm.””

“I am trying to prevent something worse from happening.””

“By signing what?””

He looked at her with a desperation she had never seen before.

“I don't know what else to do.””

For a moment, she saw the frightened young man she had loved before the money, the company, and the carefully constructed life. She wanted to believe that he was trapped by circumstances beyond his control.

But he had been hiding those circumstances from her.

And he was still trying to leave her behind.

“Then we figure it out together,” she said.

“You don't get to decide that I am too fragile to know what is happening to my own life.””

Malcolm's phone vibrated a third time.

He looked at the screen.

His face went rigid.

Nia stepped closer.

“What now?””

He didn't answer.

She reached for the phone, but he pulled it away.

“Malcolm, show me.””

“No.””

The refusal was immediate, absolute.

May you like

And in that single word, Nia heard the truth he still wasn't willing to say.

Whatever Darius was demanding tonight, Malcolm feared it more than he feared losing his wife.
