Chapter 9: The Name Beneath the Blood

Nobody spoke for nearly a minute.

Marcus stared at the laboratory report until the words blurred.

The document listed Denise as the child's mother and Darius Carter as the biological father. The test had been performed at a private laboratory eleven years earlier, shortly after Ava's birth.

A second report, dated six months later, confirmed the result.

There was no ambiguity.

Ava was Darius's daughter.

Darius, the cousin Marcus had grown up calling his brother. Darius, who had vanished eighteen years earlier after a violent dispute with Reverend Thomas. Darius, whose supposed death had never produced a body or a funeral.

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

“Denise.””

She stood near the garage door, trembling.

“Tell me this isn't true.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I can't.””

He looked at her as if he no longer recognized her.

“You had a child with Darius?””

Denise nodded.

Marcus felt something inside him crack.

“When?””

“Before we got married.””

The answer came so quietly that it almost disappeared beneath the wind moving through the broken window.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Marcus, please let me explain.””

“You let me believe I was the father of a child who died. You let me believe my brother was dead. You let me spend eleven years grieving a man who might have been alive all along. And now you're telling me the child in our basement belongs to another man?””

His voice rose with every sentence.

“Who else in this family have you lied to?””

Denise covered her mouth.

Jordan looked between his parents, frightened by the anger spreading through the garage.

“Dad, please.””

Marcus turned away, struggling to breathe.

He wanted to scream.

He wanted to throw the phone against the wall.

Most of all, he wanted to go back to the moment before Jordan had opened their bedroom door, before the entire world had begun collapsing around them.

Ava approached him slowly.

“Mr. Marcus?””

He didn't answer.

“Mr. Marcus, are you mad at me?””

The question broke through his anger.

He turned.

The little girl stood before him, her eyes wet and her hands trembling.

“No,” he said immediately.

She looked unconvinced.

“You look mad.””

“I'm not mad at you.””

“Then why are you looking at me like that?””

Marcus knelt.

Because she was a child.

Because none of this was her fault.

Because no matter how many adults had used her as a weapon, she deserved at least one person who would look at her without seeing a betrayal.

He gently took her hands.

“I'm trying to understand something, sweetheart. That's all.””

“Am I still allowed to stay with you?””

His throat tightened.

“Yes.””

“Even if my daddy isn't who you thought he was?””

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

“Especially then.””

Ava threw her arms around his neck.

He held her, closing his eyes as the child sobbed against his shoulder.

Behind them, Denise began crying harder.

Jordan moved beside his mother and held her hand, but his eyes remained fixed on Marcus and Ava.

The boy had always been the only child in the house. He had grown up believing that the world was stable, that his parents knew everything, and that family secrets were things adults kept because they wanted to protect children.

Now he was watching his father hold a little girl who might be his cousin, his niece, or something else entirely.

He didn't know what she was to him.

He only knew she was scared.

And he knew what it felt like to be scared in a house full of adults who refused to explain anything.

“She's my sister,” Jordan said suddenly.

Marcus looked up.

Jordan wiped his face.

“I don't care whose DNA she has. She's my sister now.””

Ava began crying again, but this time she smiled through the tears.

Denise reached for both children.

Marcus stood and looked at the laboratory report once more.

“Bennett, can you verify this?””

The officer nodded.

“I can request a forensic review, but I need to understand how these documents connect to the case.””

Marcus handed him the phone.

“Start with the man named Darius Carter.””

Bennett studied the photograph.

“Was he reported missing?””

“Eighteen years ago,” Loretta answered.

“The police told us he had left the state after stealing money from a business partner.””

Marcus frowned.

“Thomas's company?””

Loretta nodded.

“Your father believed Darius had discovered something. He said Darius was trying to expose a fraud involving the church's development projects.””

Bennett examined the report again.

“Do you know whether Darius was ever found?””

“No,” Loretta said.

“Thomas told us he died in a car accident. But there was never a funeral.””

Marcus looked at the photograph of Darius holding the newborn.

The man looked young, barely twenty-five, with a broad smile and the same distinctive dimple that appeared on Ava's left cheek.

Ava had his eyes.

Marcus could see it now.

“Why did Denise never tell me?”” he asked.

Loretta's face tightened.

“Because Thomas threatened her.””

Denise shook her head.

“That wasn't the only reason.””

Marcus looked at her.

She wiped her cheeks.

“I was afraid you would hate me. Darius and I were together before you and I got married. I loved him, but he became involved with people who scared me.

When he disappeared, I thought he had abandoned me. Then you came into my life, and you made me feel safe.””

Marcus swallowed.

“When did you learn he might be alive?””

“Eleven years ago. After Ava was born, Andre came to me with the truth. He said Darius had been framed for the financial crimes, and that Thomas was using the false death to keep him from exposing the operation.””

“Then why did you tell me our baby had died?””

“Because Thomas told me he would kill Darius if I revealed Ava's identity. He said that if I stayed quiet, everyone would remain safe.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“And you believed him.””

“I was terrified.””

“So was I!””

The words erupted from him.

Denise flinched.

“I buried my brother. I thought I had lost my father. I spent years believing our family was cursed by tragedy. And you watched me suffer while you knew there was a chance the truth could save us!””

“I didn't know where Darius was!””

“Then you should have told me what you knew!””

“I was afraid you would go after Thomas!””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Instead, Thomas came after us!””

The garage fell silent.

Loretta stepped between them.

“Enough. Fighting each other is exactly what Thomas wants.””

Marcus turned away.

She was right.

Every secret had been designed to isolate them. Every lie had convinced one family member that the others were dangerous, untrustworthy, or too fragile to handle the truth.

Thomas hadn't merely hidden people.

He had turned their love into a weapon against them.

Bennett's phone vibrated.

He read the message, and his expression changed.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

“The fire investigators found a second device inside your house. It was connected to a remote trigger. The explosion wasn't an accident.””

“We know Thomas did it.””

“There's more. The device was registered to a company owned by Darius Carter.””

Marcus stared at him.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“Maybe not. But the registration is real.””

Denise went pale.

“No. Darius wouldn't do that.””

Bennett held up a hand.

“I'm not saying he did. I'm saying someone used his company.””

Marcus looked at the documents again.

The digital files contained financial records, hospital reports, and recordings. But none of them explained why Thomas had gone to such lengths to keep Ava hidden.

Then he noticed a line on the laboratory report.

A handwritten note appeared beneath the official results.

Subject D.C. carries the inherited marker associated with the Carter family trust.

Marcus frowned.

“What is this?””

Loretta leaned closer.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Oh, no.””

“What?””

She pressed a hand against the workbench.

“Your grandfather established a private trust for the family. It included land, property, and shares in several businesses. When he died, the trust was supposed to pass to his descendants.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What does that have to do with Ava?””

“Everything.””

Loretta swallowed.

“Your grandfather discovered that someone had been stealing from the trust. He changed the inheritance terms so that the money would eventually pass to the youngest surviving descendant of his bloodline.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You're saying Ava is the heir?””

Loretta nodded.

“If Darius is her father, then she may be the only person who can inherit the remaining assets.””

Bennett looked up from his phone.

“How much money are we talking about?””

Loretta's answer came in a whisper.

“More than forty million dollars.””

Marcus felt sick.

Suddenly, the pieces began falling into place.

Darius had discovered the fraud. Raymond had tried to expose it. Andre had helped conceal Ava. Thomas had fabricated deaths, falsified records, and manipulated the family.

Ava wasn't merely a child who knew too much.

She was the person who could take everything from him.

But Marcus still didn't understand why Andre had claimed to be alive while allowing Ava to believe he was her father.

He pulled out the black phone and dialed Andre again.

The call connected immediately.

“Marcus?””

“Tell me the truth.””

“About what?””

“Ava. Darius. The trust. Everything.””

Andre exhaled.

“I knew you'd find the files.””

“Why did you tell Ava you were her father?””

“Because Darius asked me to protect her.””

Marcus froze.

“Darius is alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere Thomas can't reach him.””

“Then bring him home!””

“I can't.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Stop saying that! You let me mourn you for eleven years. You let Mama visit your grave.

You let Denise believe our daughter was dead. You let Ava grow up thinking her father had abandoned her. How much more are you going to make us suffer?””

Andre's voice broke.

“I didn't choose to disappear.””

“Then who did?””

A long silence followed.

Finally, Andre whispered, “Our father.””

Marcus felt the world stop.

“What?””

“Raymond wasn't killed in an accident. He staged his death to escape Thomas, but he didn't get away clean. He helped build the trust, and he knew exactly what Thomas was planning.””

Marcus stared at the phone.

“Are you telling me our father is alive?””

“No.””

Andre's answer came sharply.

“Our father died eleven years ago. The man in the coffin was Raymond.””

Marcus staggered.

“That doesn't make sense. Dad died eighteen years ago.””

“He didn't. He disappeared. He lived under another name, helping us gather evidence against Thomas. When he finally tried to expose everything, Thomas found him.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He could barely breathe.

His father had been alive for seven years after the family believed he was dead.

Then he had died for real, and they had buried him under Andre's name.

The lie was so monstrous that Marcus couldn't decide whether to laugh or scream.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Thomas had a recording of you.””

Marcus remembered the voice that had played through the phone.

Get rid of the problem before anybody finds out.

“What recording?””

“Something you said when you were twenty-three. Something Thomas edited to make it sound like you ordered our father's death.””

Marcus's stomach twisted.

He remembered the night clearly now.

He had been arguing with Andre about their father's disappearance. Thomas had approached him afterward, claiming he could help locate Raymond. Marcus had angrily told him to do whatever it took to bring his father home.

The recording had cut off the words that followed.

Alive.

He had said, “Bring him home alive. Get rid of whoever is keeping him from us.””

Thomas had removed the first part and twisted the rest into something sinister.

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Where is the original recording?””

“In the safe.””

Marcus looked at the storage device in Bennett's hand.

“Then we have it.””

“No,” Andre said.

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“The file you found is only a copy. Thomas has the original, along with the evidence that proves who really killed our father.””

Ava stepped closer to Marcus.

“Uncle Andre?””

He looked down at her.

The little girl had heard enough to understand that something important was happening.

“Is my daddy alive?””

Andre fell silent.

Then he answered.

“Yes.””

Ava's face crumpled.

“Where is he?””

Andre's voice softened.

“I'm trying to bring him home, baby.””

She pressed her hands against her mouth.

“Please hurry.””

“I will.””

The call crackled.

Then Andre's voice changed.

“Marcus, there's something else. Thomas knows you're at the garage. He's coming for the key.””

Marcus turned toward the open garage door.

A black SUV had just stopped at the end of the driveway.

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, and wore a dark jacket.

Marcus couldn't see his face clearly in the morning light.

But he recognized the way the man walked.

He recognized the scar near the eyebrow.

He recognized the silver ring on his right hand.

The man approached the garage.

And when he stepped into the light, Marcus forgot how to breathe.

It was his father.

Raymond Carter.

Alive.

The man who had supposedly died eighteen years earlier stood in front of him, looking older, grayer, and impossibly tired.

His father stared at Marcus.

Then his gaze moved to Ava.

For the first time, the old man's composure shattered.

“Oh, God,” he whispered.

Ava took one step forward.

“Are you my granddaddy?””

Raymond closed his eyes.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

May you like

He opened them again, and tears ran down his face.

“And I'm the reason your father has been missing for eleven years.””
