Chapter 5: The Call That Changed Everything

Marcus drove home with both hands gripping the steering wheel.

Jordan sat in the back seat, his certificate tucked inside his backpack. Danielle rode in the passenger seat, staring out the window and refusing to meet her husband's eyes.

The radio remained off.

Every few minutes, Marcus glanced at the rearview mirror. Jordan was looking out at the passing houses, but his reflection showed a boy who was thinking much harder than he wanted his parents to know.

At a red light, Jordan finally spoke.

“Dad?””

“Yeah, buddy?””

“Are you mad at Grandma?””

Marcus glanced at Danielle.

“No, son. Why?””

“Because when she called, Mom looked scared.””

Danielle turned around.

“Jordan, grown-ups sometimes have conversations that children don't need to worry about.””

Jordan's face tightened.

“Everybody keeps saying that.””

She paused.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you tell me not to worry, but then you get mad whenever I ask questions.””

Danielle turned back toward the windshield.

Marcus felt an ache spread through his chest.

His son wasn't asking for much. He wanted to understand why his name had changed and why his parents were acting as if the question itself were dangerous.

“Jordan,” Marcus said, “you have every right to ask questions about your own life. Your mother and I will figure out the answers.””

“Together?””

The word was quiet.

Marcus looked at Danielle again.

“That's what we should have done from the beginning.””

Jordan nodded and returned his attention to the window.

At home, Marcus made his son a sandwich and helped him put the certificate inside a protective folder. Danielle disappeared into the bedroom, claiming she had a headache.

Marcus didn't stop her.

He knew that if he followed her immediately, they would argue, and he didn't want Jordan listening from the hallway.

Instead, he sat across from his son at the kitchen table.

“Do you remember when Mom first mentioned Mitchell?””

Jordan thought about it.

“Maybe last month? Grandma had some old pictures. She showed me one of Mom when she was little.””

“What did she tell you?””

“That Mitchell was her family name before she married you.””

Marcus nodded.

“That part is true.””

“She said it would be nice if I knew more about her side of the family. I said okay.””

“That sounds reasonable.””

Jordan rubbed the edge of the certificate folder.

“Then Mom asked if I wanted to use Mitchell sometimes. I thought she meant at Grandma's house or something. I didn't know it was going to be on my school stuff.””

Marcus took a careful breath.

“Did she ask you to sign anything?””

“No.””

“Did anybody else?””

Jordan shook his head.

“Dad, am I in trouble?””

Marcus reached across the table and covered his son's hand with his own.

“Absolutely not.””

“Because I told my teacher I liked Mitchell?””

“No, buddy. You're allowed to like your grandmother's name. You're allowed to be proud of her family. You can be proud of both sides of your family.””

“Then why are you upset?””

Marcus considered his answer.

“Because important decisions should be made honestly. If someone changes something about your life without explaining it, you deserve to understand why. And when a decision affects both your parents, they should talk about it instead of hiding it.””

Jordan looked down.

“Mom said you wouldn't understand.””

Marcus felt the familiar sting of anger, but he kept his voice steady.

“Sometimes I don't understand things right away. Sometimes I make mistakes. But that doesn't mean I should be kept in the dark about you.””

Jordan nodded slowly.

“Are you and Mom getting divorced?””

The question stopped Marcus cold.

He had expected it eventually, but not from a twelve-year-old boy sitting across from him with a school certificate between them.

“Why would you ask that?””

“Because Mom said she wanted a fresh start.””

Marcus closed his eyes for a moment.

He hadn't heard Danielle use those words directly with Jordan. Apparently, he had been wrong to assume the conversation at school was the first time their son had encountered the idea.

“Your mother and I have some serious things to work through,” he said.

“I can't promise you what the future will look like. But I can promise that I'll always be your father, and I'll always love you.””

Jordan's lower lip trembled.

May you like

“Even if I keep Mitchell?””

Marcus squeezed his
