Chapter 1: The Fall That Exposed a Secret
The man I saved from falling down a staircase was the owner of the hotel. But the secret he revealed afterward would destroy everything I believed about my family.
And the woman who tried to push him to his death was his own daughter.
I was halfway through polishing the brass handrail when I noticed the elderly gentleman standing at the top of the staircase.
The ballroom behind him glittered with crystal chandeliers, champagne glasses, and expensive evening gowns. Hundreds of wealthy guests had gathered for the annual charity gala at the Grand Bellmont Hotel, one of the most prestigious hotels in the city.
I was supposed to be invisible.
That was part of the job.
At twenty-five, I had learned how to move quietly through rooms where people spent more on a dinner than I earned in three months.
My name was Avery Cole.
And tonight, like every other night, my job was to make sure everyone else's world looked perfect.
I wiped a small fingerprint from the handrail and reached for my cleaning cloth.
Then I noticed the old man staring at me.
He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, a silver tie, and a small diamond pin shaped like the hotel's original logo.
I recognized him immediately.
Walter Bellmont.
The seventy-two-year-old founder of the Grand Bellmont Hotel.
His photograph hung in the lobby beside the reception desk. He was the kind of man whose name appeared in business magazines and whose handshake could apparently make entire companies change direction.
But right now, he wasn't looking at the hotel.
He was looking at me.
More specifically, he was looking at my name tag.
AVERY COLE.
His expression changed.
First, confusion.
Then something resembling disbelief.
He leaned forward slightly, studying my face as though he had just seen someone he thought was buried years ago.
"Excuse me," he began.
I straightened.
"Yes, Mr. Bellmont?""
His lips parted.
"Your name is—"
"Dad?""
A woman's voice interrupted him.
Simone Bellmont approached from the ballroom.
At thirty-eight, she had inherited her father's sharp cheekbones, expensive taste, and commanding presence. She wore a champagne-colored dress, diamond earrings, and a smile that made guests feel important.
She had recently been appointed the hotel's new chief executive.
Tonight was her first major public event in that position.
"Everything all right?"" Simone asked.
Walter didn't answer immediately.
His eyes remained fixed on my name tag.
Simone followed his gaze.
For one brief second, her smile disappeared.
It was so quick that I might have missed it if I hadn't been looking directly at her.
Then she stepped between us.
"Dad, the mayor is waiting for you.""
"I need a moment," Walter replied.
"Not now.""
"It's important.""
Simone glanced at me.
Her eyes moved from my face to my name tag.
Then back to my face.
Something cold passed through her expression.
Walter tried to walk around her.
"Simone, please.""
She moved with him.
"Dad, come with me.""
"I said I need to—"
What happened next took less than two seconds.
Simone suddenly planted both hands against her father's shoulders and shoved.
Hard.
Walter stumbled backward.
His polished shoes slipped toward the staircase.
His arms flailed.
His body tilted dangerously toward the first descending step.
"Mr. Bellmont!""
I dropped my cleaning cloth.
I lunged forward and caught his left arm with both hands.
His weight pulled me toward the stairs. My shoes slid across the polished marble, and my shoulder struck the brass railing.
But I didn't let go.
I grabbed the handrail with my other hand.
Walter gasped.
At the same moment, Darius, the hotel's forty-year-old head of security, came running from the ballroom entrance.
"Mr. Bellmont!""
He caught Walter's other arm.
"Easy! I've got you!""
Together, Darius and I pulled him away from the staircase.
Walter stumbled onto the flat landing.
I guided him toward a chair beside the entrance and helped him sit down.
"Are you hurt?"" I asked.
He shook his head, breathing heavily.
"No. No, I don't think so.""
Darius crouched beside him.
"Sir, can you hear me? Did you hit your head?""
"I'm fine," Walter answered.
I stepped back, my hands trembling.
My shoulder hurt.
My cleaning cloth lay abandoned near the top step.
But Walter was safe.
Then Simone began shouting.
"She pushed him!""
I turned.
Simone was pointing directly at me.
Darius stood up.
"What?""
"That employee! She pushed my father!""
I stared at her.
For a moment, I genuinely thought she was making some kind of mistake.
"I didn't—"
"Don't speak!"" Simone snapped.
She turned toward Darius.
"I saw everything. She attacked him!""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"I just caught him!""
Simone stepped closer.
"You're lying.""
Darius looked from Simone to me.
Then Walter spoke.
"That's enough.""
His voice was weak, but it carried.
Simone turned.
"Dad, you're confused. You nearly fell.""
Walter slowly lifted his head.
His eyes were suddenly clear.
"Simone, you pushed me.""
Silence.
A waiter standing near the ballroom entrance stopped moving.
Two guests exchanged glances.
Simone's face tightened.
"What are you saying?""
"I said you pushed me.""
"You're upset. You don't know what happened.""
Walter gripped the armrests of the chair.
"I know exactly what happened.""
Simone ignored him.
Instead, she moved directly toward me.
She came so close that I could smell her expensive perfume.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Listen carefully, you little nobody.""
I didn't move.
"You will keep your mouth shut.""
"Excuse me?""
She leaned closer.
"You're a cleaner. Nobody here knows you. Nobody here cares about you. Don't make the mistake of thinking anyone will believe you over me.""
My fingers curled.
"I don't need anyone to believe me. I know what I did.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"You're making a very serious mistake.""
Darius stepped between us.
"That's enough, Miss Bellmont.""
Simone turned sharply.
"Stay out of this.""
"I'm the head of security. I need to establish what happened.""
"Then establish it.""
Darius looked toward the security camera mounted beside the ballroom entrance.
"I'll check the footage.""
For the first time, Simone looked genuinely frightened.
Her eyes snapped toward the camera.
Her jaw tightened.
"There's no need to make a scene.""
"That's not your decision," Darius replied.
He reached for his radio.
Walter, however, wasn't looking at either of them anymore.
He was staring at me.
More precisely, at my name tag.
Then he looked up at my face.
His breathing changed.
"Young lady...""
I turned.
"Yes, sir?""
He swallowed.
"Denise Cole is your mother?""
My stomach tightened.
I hadn't heard that name spoken by a stranger in years.
"Yes.""
Walter's fingers began trembling against the chair.
"Is she still...""
I frowned.
"She died when I was born.""
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, the entire landing seemed to go silent.
Then he looked directly into my eyes.
"No.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"What?""
"Your mother is alive.""
I couldn't breathe.
Walter's voice fell to a whisper.
"I took you away.""
Simone stopped looking at the security camera.
She stared at her father.
And for the first time that evening, the woman who had just tried to have me accused of attacking him looked terrified.
I looked at Walter.
The hand I had used to save him was still shaking.
May you like
I opened my mouth to ask what he meant.
But before I could speak—
