Chapter 8: The Truth About Her Final Night

Russell didn't sleep.

He sat in Margaret's living room until sunrise, replaying Marcus's final words.

Ask Dana who was with your wife the night she died.

The sentence wouldn't leave his head.

His wife had been sick.

She had spent her final weeks in the hospital.

Russell had been there almost every day.

He remembered holding her hand.

He remembered her asking him to take care of Ellie.

He remembered the last time she smiled.

But there had been one evening he hadn't been there.

An evening when Dana had offered to bring dinner to the hospital because Russell needed to take Ellie home.

He had thanked her.

He had trusted her.

And now he was beginning to question that memory.

At 8:15 a.m., he called Thomas Whitaker.

"I need you to investigate Marcus Reed.""

There was a pause.

"May I ask why?""

"He's claiming to be Ellie's biological father. He's been working with Dana. And he says he knows something about my wife's final night.""

Thomas became serious.

"Do not confront him directly.""

"I need answers.""

"And you'll get them. But let me do this properly.""

Russell looked toward the kitchen.

Ellie was eating toast with Margaret.

"There's another thing," he said.

"What?""

"I want to know whether Marcus has ever filed anything regarding Ellie.""

Thomas paused.

"That may be possible.""

"Find out.""

"I'll begin immediately.""

Later that morning, Russell drove to the hospital where his wife had spent her final weeks.

He hadn't returned since the funeral.

The building looked exactly the same.

The same glass entrance.

The same automatic doors.

The same smell of disinfectant in the corridors.

He approached the records department.

A clerk greeted him.

"How can I help you?""

"My wife was a patient here four years ago. I need to ask about her visitor records.""

The clerk explained that some records required formal authorization.

Russell provided the necessary information.

After several minutes, a supervisor came out.

"Mr. Russell, I understand you're looking for visitor information from your wife's final admission.""

"Yes.""

"Is there a particular date?""

He gave her the date.

The supervisor checked the system.

Then she looked up.

"There's something unusual.""

Russell's stomach tightened.

"What?""

"A visitor was recorded under your wife's room number that evening.""

"Who?""

"Marcus Reed.""

Russell felt the blood drain from his face.

"What time?""

"Approximately 8:40 p.m.""

He remembered that evening.

He had been at home with Ellie.

Dana had told him she'd stayed at the hospital until nearly ten.

He had believed her.

"Was anyone else there?""

The supervisor examined the record.

"Mrs. Dana was listed as accompanying the visitor.""

Russell closed his eyes.

He thanked the supervisor and stepped into the corridor.

He stood beside a window overlooking the parking lot.

His hands were shaking.

Dana had brought Marcus to see his dying wife.

Without telling him.

Why?

Thomas called shortly after noon.

"Russell, I've found something.""

"What?""

"Marcus Reed filed a petition concerning parental rights several years ago.""

Russell leaned against the kitchen counter.

"Against my wife?""

"Yes. But it was withdrawn before a hearing.""

"Why?""

"Your wife challenged the petition. She submitted evidence that Marcus had previously refused parental responsibility and that his later request was connected to the estate.""

Russell closed his eyes.

"Can you send me the records?""

"I'll send what I'm legally permitted to share.""

"Anything else?""

Thomas hesitated.

"Yes. Marcus has recently made inquiries about the property trust through a third party.""

"Who?""

"A woman named Patricia.""

Russell looked toward the staircase.

Dana's mother.

"Of course.""

Thomas continued.

"There's also a record of a proposed agreement between Marcus and Dana.""

Russell's jaw tightened.

"What agreement?""

"I haven't seen the full document yet. But the description suggests a financial arrangement connected to Ellie.""

"Find it.""

"I will.""

That afternoon, Russell returned to the house.

He found Dana in the kitchen.

She was packing groceries into cabinets.

For a moment, they looked at each other without speaking.

Then Russell placed his keys on the counter.

"I went to the hospital.""

Dana stopped.

"Why?""

"I wanted to check the visitor records from my wife's final admission.""

Her hand froze around a box of cereal.

Russell continued.

"Marcus was there.""

Dana didn't answer.

"You brought him.""

She slowly put the cereal away.

"Russell—"

"You told me you stayed with my wife that night.""

"I did.""

"With Marcus?""

Dana turned around.

"Your wife wanted to see him.""

Russell stared.

"She was dying.""

"I know.""

"And you brought the man who had abandoned her child?""

Dana's voice became defensive.

"He said he wanted to apologize.""

"Did she forgive him?""

Dana looked away.

"That's not the point.""

"Then what is?""

Dana put both hands on the counter.

"Your wife asked me to bring him. She wanted to settle things before she died.""

Russell shook his head.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because she didn't want you involved.""

"That doesn't make sense.""

"It happened.""

He stepped closer.

"What did Marcus say to her?""

Dana's lips tightened.

"Nothing important.""

"Then why are you afraid to tell me?""

"I'm not afraid!""

Her voice cracked.

Russell looked at her.

"You're lying.""

Dana's eyes filled.

"Your wife was difficult.""

Russell went completely still.

"What?""

"She was controlling everything. Even from her hospital bed, she wanted to decide what happened to everyone.""

Russell stared at her.

"She was trying to protect her daughter.""

"She was trying to control you.""

"She was dying, Dana.""

Dana looked away.

Then she said something that made Russell's heart pound.

"Marcus told her he wanted to be part of Ellie's life. Your wife refused. They argued.""

"About what?""

"About the house.""

Russell's expression changed.

"Explain.""

Dana swallowed.

"Marcus wanted Ellie to have access to him. Your wife said he only wanted the inheritance. They fought, and she told him to leave.""

Russell's voice dropped.

"And you?""

"I was there.""

"What did you do?""

"Nothing.""

"Did you tell me he was there?""

Dana shook her head.

Russell stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because I didn't want another fight.""

He laughed bitterly.

"You didn't want a fight? You brought him into a hospital room without telling me.""

Dana wiped her cheek.

"Your wife was already angry with me.""

"Why?""

"Because she thought I was trying to replace her.""

Russell said nothing.

Dana continued.

"She told me I would never be Ellie's mother. She said I would always be second.""

Russell looked at her.

"She was right about one thing. You are not Ellie's mother.""

Dana flinched.

"I'm her stepmother.""

"Then act like someone who understands what that responsibility means.""

Upstairs, Ellie was sitting on her bed when she heard the argument.

She wasn't trying to listen.

But the voices carried through the hallway.

She heard her mother's name.

She heard Marcus.

And she heard Dana say something that made her stomach twist.

"Your wife made sure I could never have what I wanted!""

Ellie stepped toward the door.

Then she heard Russell respond.

"What exactly did you want?""

Dana's answer was barely audible.

"Everything you promised me.""

Ellie opened the bedroom door.

Both adults turned.

Russell immediately lowered his voice.

"Sweetheart, everything okay?""

Ellie nodded.

Then she looked at Dana.

"Did my mom ask you to take care of me?""

Dana looked startled.

"What?""

"Before she died. Did she ask you to take care of me?""

Dana didn't answer.

Ellie stepped closer.

"Because I remember her saying something.""

Russell knelt.

"What do you remember?""

Ellie looked down at her hands.

"Mom told me Dana would be nice to me.""

Russell closed his eyes.

Ellie continued.

"She said she wanted me to have another woman who could help me when she wasn't here.""

Dana's face changed.

For the first time, her expression looked genuinely uncomfortable.

Ellie looked directly at her.

"Mom trusted you.""

Dana opened her mouth.

But no words came.

Ellie returned to her room.

Russell watched her go.

Then he turned back toward Dana.

"She trusted you.""

Dana wiped her eyes.

"Don't.""

"She trusted you with the most important thing in her life.""

"I said don't!""

Russell stepped back.

"I don't recognize the woman standing in front of me.""

Dana grabbed her handbag.

"Maybe you never knew me.""

She walked out.

That evening, Thomas sent Russell an email.

The subject line read:

*URGENT — DOCUMENT DISCOVERED.*

Russell opened the attachment.

It was a photograph of a signed agreement.

The first paragraph identified Marcus Reed.

The second identified Dana.

The third described a financial payment.

Russell read the amount.

$75,000.

In exchange, Dana had agreed to help Marcus obtain access to Ellie's trust and facilitate a change in her living arrangements.

Russell felt sick.

But the final paragraph was worse.

It stated that Dana would receive an additional payment if Ellie voluntarily left the property.

Russell stared at the screen.

He heard footsteps behind him.

Ellie stood in the doorway.

"Dad?""

He quickly closed the laptop.

"Hey, sweetheart.""

"Is everything okay?""

He looked at her.

Then he made a decision.

He wasn't going to hide the truth forever.

But he wasn't going to make his daughter carry the burden of every adult's betrayal, either.

"We're going to be okay.""

Ellie nodded.

Then she held out something.

A small silver necklace.

Russell stared.

"Where did you find that?""

"In my backpack.""

He took it.

It was the necklace that had belonged to her mother.

"Who put it there?""

Ellie shook her head.

"I don't know. It wasn't there yesterday.""

Russell turned it over.

A tiny piece of folded paper was wrapped around the chain.

He carefully opened it.

Four words were written inside.

*ASK ABOUT THE HOSPITAL CAMERA.*

Russell looked up.

Ellie was watching him.

And suddenly he realized that someone had returned the necklace for a reason.

Someone knew what he was investigating.

Someone wanted him to look at the hospital footage.

His phone rang.

Thomas.

Russell answered immediately.

"Did you send this?""

"Send what?""

"A message about the hospital camera.""

Thomas was silent.

Then he said:

"Russell, listen carefully. I've just received a call from the hospital.""

"What happened?""

"They found archived security footage from the corridor outside your wife's room.""

Russell gripped the phone.

"And?""

Thomas paused.

"The footage shows Dana entering your wife's room with Marcus.""

Russell closed his eyes.

"That's what I already know.""

"No," Thomas replied.

"You don't understand.""

There was another pause.

"She entered with Marcus at 8:40 p.m.""

Russell waited.

Thomas continued.

"She left alone at 9:12.""

Russell frowned.

"Then?""

"Then she came back.""

"When?""

"At 9:47.""

Russell looked toward the staircase.

Thomas lowered his voice.

"Russell, the hospital has confirmed that your wife died at 9:53 p.m.""

Russell stopped breathing.

Six minutes.

May you like

Dana had returned six minutes before his wife died.

And she had never told him.
