Chapter 4: The Secret Behind Rochelle’s Warning

“Warren, wait!””

Rochelle’s voice cracked through the air just as Eli threw himself toward his father.

Warren caught his son against his chest, instinct taking over before he could process the fear in Rochelle’s voice. Eli wrapped both arms around his neck and squeezed so tightly that Warren stumbled backward half a step.

“Daddy! Daddy, you came!””

“I came, buddy.”” Warren held him close, pressing his cheek against Eli’s curls.

“I told you I was coming, didn’t I?””

Eli nodded furiously against his shoulder.

“I waited for you!””

Those four words hurt more than every argument Warren and Rochelle had ever had.

“You waited for me?””

“Every day!””

Warren pulled back just enough to see his son’s face. Eli’s eyes were shining, and his small hands clutched the collar of Warren’s shirt as though somebody might take him away again.

“Why didn’t Mommy let you come inside?”” Eli asked.

Warren went still.

Behind them, Rochelle stepped onto the porch, forcing a smile that looked painfully unnatural.

“Eli, sweetheart, Daddy and I were just talking about some grown-up things.””

“But you said he couldn't come!””

“That's enough.””

The sharpness in Rochelle’s voice startled Eli. His smile disappeared, and his shoulders rose toward his ears.

Warren noticed immediately.

He had seen that reaction before, though never this clearly. Eli had always been an energetic child, eager to talk, ask questions, and show off whatever he had discovered. But recently, during their short phone calls, Warren had noticed something different.

Eli often looked away before answering questions.

Sometimes, he would begin telling Warren a story and then abruptly stop, glancing offscreen as though checking whether someone was listening.

Warren had assumed the separation was confusing him.

Now, holding his son against his chest, he wondered whether there was more to it.

“Hey,” Warren whispered, gently touching Eli’s cheek.

“You don't have to be scared, buddy. You're allowed to tell Daddy how you feel.””

Rochelle folded her arms.

“Don't put things in his head.””

“I'm asking him a question.””

“And I'm telling you not to turn him against me.””

Warren looked at her.

“You were the one shouting at him to stay inside when he heard me calling his name.””

“Because you and I were having an argument!””

“And now he's standing here asking why you wouldn't let me see him.””

“Because you showed up without resolving what you owe me!””

Warren's face hardened.

“Not in front of him.””

“Then stop acting like I'm the bad guy!””

Eli buried his face in Warren's shoulder.

That was enough.

Warren shifted the boy onto his hip and stepped away from the doorway.

“We're going to sit down for a minute,” he said gently.

“You want to see what I brought you?””

Eli lifted his head.

“You brought me something?””

Warren managed a smile.

“Of course I did.””

He reached for the blue gift bag on the porch railing. Eli immediately leaned toward it, curiosity replacing some of his fear.

Warren pulled out the dinosaur toy.

For a moment, the entire world became simple again.

“That's a T. rex!”” Eli exclaimed.

“You got it.””

“It has the little arms!””

“That's what makes it special.””

Eli laughed, turning the toy over in his hands. Warren watched him with a smile that felt both wonderful and painful. This was what he had driven two hours for.

Not to prove something to Rochelle. Not to win an argument. Just to hear his son laugh.

Then Eli looked up.

“Daddy, can you stay tonight?””

Warren's smile faltered.

“I can't stay overnight today, buddy. But I want to spend time with you.””

“Why not?””

Before Warren could answer, Rochelle interrupted.

“Because Daddy has other things to do.””

Eli's face fell.

Warren slowly turned toward her.

“Don't answer for me.””

“I'm explaining the situation.””

“No. You're making him believe I don't want to be here.””

“Then perhaps you should have thought about that before building a new life with another woman.””

Eli looked between them.

“Is Daddy going away again?””

Warren's chest tightened.

“No, buddy. I'm right here.””

“But Mommy said you were busy.””

Rochelle's face changed.

Warren saw it. She hadn't expected Eli to repeat that particular statement, not in front of him.

He crouched until he was eye level with his son.

“Sometimes grown-ups have to work, Eli. But that doesn't mean I don't want to see you. You understand?””

Eli nodded slowly.

“Can I call you when I miss you?””

“Anytime you can, buddy.””

Rochelle let out an irritated breath.

“This is exactly what I'm talking about. You make promises without understanding what they require.””

Warren stood.

“Then let's establish a schedule. A real one. Written down.

Specific days, specific times. No more last-minute arguments at the door.””

She laughed without humor.

“You think a piece of paper is going to solve everything?””

“No. But refusing to make one guarantees we keep having this conversation.””

Rochelle looked toward Eli, who was making the dinosaur stomp across Warren's arm.

“Go inside, sweetheart.””

Eli's head snapped up.

“But I just got here!””

“Now, Eli.””

The boy's smile vanished.

Warren tightened his hold around him.

“He can stay outside with me while we talk.””

“I said he needs to go inside.””

“And I said—”

“Warren, please!””

The sudden plea stopped him.

Rochelle stared at him, her eyes wide and her breathing uneven. For the first time that afternoon, she didn't look furious.

She looked afraid.

Warren lowered his voice.

“What are you hiding?””

“Nothing.””

“Then why are you acting like I'm about to discover something terrible?””

“Because you always assume the worst about me!””

“I'm asking you a question.””

“And I'm telling you to stop!””

Eli's little fingers curled into Warren's shirt.

Then the boy spoke, so quietly that Warren almost missed it.

“Daddy?””

Warren immediately looked down.

“Yeah, buddy?””

“Are you going to take me away?””

Everything stopped.

Warren felt as though the porch had tilted beneath his feet.

“Who told you that?””

Eli looked at Rochelle.

It was only a glance, but it told Warren more than an explanation might have.

Rochelle stepped forward.

“Eli, don't start.””

Warren stared at her.

“Don't start what?””

“He doesn't understand what he's saying.””

“Then help me understand.””

Rochelle's lips trembled before she pressed them together.

Eli clung to Warren's neck.

“Mommy said if I went with you, I might not come back.””

Warren felt the blood drain from his face.

He looked at his son, then slowly raised his eyes toward his ex-wife.

“Is that what you've been telling him?””

Rochelle didn't answer.

And in the silence that followed, Warren realized that the argument about money had never been the only battle happening inside this house.

May you like

Someone had been preparing his son to be afraid of him.

And Warren was beginning to suspect that Rochelle had a reason for being terrified of what Eli might say next.
