Chapter 6: The Man Who Let My Father Die
My mother sat motionless on the kitchen floor, staring at the shattered window.
For the first time since I had found her, Elena Carter looked completely defeated.
“Who was his business partner?”” I asked.
She didn't answer.
“Mom, I need to know.””
Her hands tightened around the edge of the table.
“Daniel Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing to me until she opened the folder and pulled out a photograph.
A younger version of my father stood beside a tall man in a gray suit. Both were smiling in front of a glass office building, holding a plaque celebrating the expansion of Carter Industries.
Daniel Whitmore stood on my father's right.
The same man who had been at our house three months after the funeral, offering condolences and telling me that my father had been a good man.
The same man who had promised to help Vanessa manage the company.
The same man who had given a speech at my father's memorial, describing him as a brother.
I felt sick.
“He was here after Dad died.””
Elena looked at me.
“What do you mean?””
“He came to the mansion. Vanessa introduced him as Dad's closest friend. He told me he would always look after the family.””
My mother shut her eyes.
“Of course he did.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel and Robert built that company together. They trusted each other for twenty years. But near the end, Robert discovered Daniel had been helping Vanessa move money out of the business.””
I thought of the bank statements on the table.
“How much?””
“Enough to destroy the company.””
“Why didn't Dad report him?””
“He wanted proof. He suspected Daniel had access to the company accounts, but he needed the original transaction records before going to the authorities.””
I looked at the silver key.
“And that's what's inside the safe?””
“Part of it.””
A car engine roared outside.
Elena jumped up and pulled the curtains closed.
“We have to leave.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere Daniel won't expect us to go.””
I grabbed the folder and my father's letter.
“What about the safe-deposit box?””
“Evelyn knows where it is. We need to reach her first.””
I looked at the clock.
Seven twenty-three.
The design competition began in less than three hours.
My gown was still at the mansion.
My medical treatment depended on winning.
And now my mother was telling me that the people who had destroyed our family might still be watching us.
“I can't leave the dress,” I said.
Elena stared at me.
“Nia, someone just threw a rock through my window.””
“I know.””
“They may have a weapon.””
“I know!””
My voice cracked.
I wiped my cheeks angrily.
“Everyone keeps telling me what I have to give up. My father, my mother, my inheritance, my eyesight. Vanessa took the money, the house, and the dress. If I walk away from the competition now, she'll have taken the last thing I made for myself.””
Elena's expression softened.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
She reached for my hand.
“I am not asking you to give up your future. I'm trying to make sure you live long enough to have one.””
I looked down at the gown's protective bag, which I had brought with me.
“I can do both.””
My mother hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“There's a bus stop two streets away. We'll go to Evelyn's office first. After that, we'll decide how to retrieve your dress safely.””
We left through the back door and walked through the narrow alley behind the house. Elena kept her head lowered, her hand gripping mine.
At the corner, we saw a black sedan parked beside the laundromat.
The driver watched us.
I recognized the man in the passenger seat.
Daniel Whitmore.
He lowered his window.
“Elena,” he called.
My mother froze.
He smiled as though they were meeting at a charity luncheon.
“It's been a long time.””
Elena pulled me toward the opposite sidewalk.
“Keep walking,” she whispered.
Daniel stepped out of the car.
“Nia, isn't it? You've grown into a beautiful young woman.””
I stared at him.
“You knew my mother was alive.””
His smile faltered.
“Your mother has been through a great deal.””
“Did you know my father was alive when the ambulance arrived?””
Daniel's expression changed so quickly that I almost missed it.
Then he laughed.
“That's an extraordinary accusation.””
“Did you?””
He adjusted his cuff.
“Your father was a complicated man. His death was tragic, but digging up old wounds won't help anyone.””
“Who stopped the ambulance?””
His eyes hardened.
Elena stepped between us.
“Stay away from my daughter.””
Daniel's smile returned.
“You should have stayed away from her yourself.””
For a moment, the street seemed to disappear around us.
Then he looked at me.
“If you want to know what happened to your father, ask Vanessa why she was the last person to speak to him.””
He climbed back into the sedan.
Before closing the door, he added, “And ask yourself why your mother waited twelve years to come home.””
The car pulled away.
I turned toward Elena.
“Is he telling the truth?””
She looked as though she had been struck.
“No.””
“Then why did he say it?””
“Because he knows the truth will destroy him.””
She took my face in her hands.
“I left because Vanessa threatened you. I stayed away because every attempt to return put you in greater danger. I have never stopped loving you, Nia. Not for one single day.””
I wanted to believe her.
More than anything, I wanted to throw my arms around her and never let go.
But twelve years of lies had taught me that love and truth were not always the same thing.
“Then help me prove it,” I said.
We reached Evelyn Brooks's law office at eight fifteen.
The receptionist tried to tell us that Mrs. Brooks wasn't available, but Elena placed her hand on the desk.
“Tell her Elena Carter is here.””
The receptionist went pale.
She picked up the phone immediately.
Less than a minute later, a door opened at the end of the corridor.
Mrs. Brooks stood there in a navy suit, her silver hair pinned neatly behind her head.
When she saw my mother, she covered her mouth.
“Elena.””
They embraced.
Then Mrs. Brooks turned to me.
“Nia, I am so sorry.””
I held up the key.
“Please stop apologizing and tell me what my father left behind.””
She nodded and led us into her office.
A large safe stood behind her desk. She unlocked it and removed a thick envelope, a flash drive, and a sealed document bearing my father's signature.
“The original will,” she said.
I stared at the envelope.
“Why didn't Vanessa know about this?””
“Because Robert arranged for the original to be deposited with a separate trustee. Vanessa only possessed a copy, and that copy omitted several important provisions.””
“What provisions?””
Mrs. Brooks opened the document.
“Your father left you controlling ownership of Carter Industries when you turned eighteen. Vanessa was appointed temporary guardian of the estate, but her authority ended on your eighteenth birthday.””
My breath caught.
“My birthday was three months ago.””
“Exactly.””
“Then why does she still control everything?””
“Because she filed a petition claiming your father lacked the capacity to make his final amendments. She also claimed your mother had disappeared with confidential company records.””
Elena shook her head.
“Those were lies.””
“I know,” Mrs. Brooks said.
“But without the original will and the supporting evidence, the court had no reason to challenge Vanessa's petition.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“What's on that?””
“Financial records, correspondence, and a video your father recorded the night he died.””
I gripped the edge of the desk.
“The same night as Brianna's recording?””
“Yes. But this one is complete.””
Mrs. Brooks inserted the drive into her computer.
A video appeared on the screen.
My father sat at his desk, his face exhausted, his shirt collar open. He looked directly into the camera.
“My name is Robert Carter,” he began.
“If this recording is being viewed, then I have reason to believe my life is in danger.””
I stopped breathing.
He explained that he had discovered a scheme involving Vanessa and Daniel. They had been transferring company money into accounts he couldn't trace. When he confronted them, Vanessa threatened to expose Elena as a thief and have her arrested.
Then my father said something that made my mother cover her mouth.
“Vanessa has told everyone that Elena died. She has also convinced my daughter that her mother abandoned her. Neither statement is true.””
The video continued.
“If anything happens to me, I want Nia to know that I protected her inheritance. I changed my will so that Vanessa cannot control it indefinitely. The original document is held in trust, and the key has been entrusted to Evelyn Brooks.””
Mrs. Brooks paused the video.
I looked at her.
“You knew all this?””
“I knew the will existed. I did not know whether Robert's suspicions about the planned attack were correct. He was supposed to meet me the following morning.””
“But he died that night.””
She nodded.
My mother leaned forward.
“Show us the rest.””
Mrs. Brooks pressed play.
My father's voice filled the room again.
“Daniel believes he has arranged a way to make my death look accidental. Vanessa believes I will sign away Nia's inheritance before the end of the week. They are both wrong.””
He leaned closer to the camera.
“There's one person who knows what really happened to Elena. Someone who helped me uncover the scheme and has been pretending to cooperate with them.””
The video flickered.
My father looked toward the office door.
Then he whispered a name.
“Brianna.””
I stared at the screen.
“No.””
Mrs. Brooks turned toward me.
“I'm afraid there's more.””
My father continued speaking.
“Brianna was present when Vanessa and Daniel discussed the plan. She recorded their conversation. She gave me the evidence, and I have hidden the original recording where neither of them will ever think to look.””
My mind raced.
Brianna had told me she knew nothing about my father's death. She had claimed she was too young to understand.
But my father had said she recorded a conversation that could expose the entire conspiracy.
“Why would Brianna help him?”” I whispered.
Elena looked at me.
“Because she was a child who knew something terrible was happening.””
I thought of Brianna crying in my bedroom, admitting that she had heard Vanessa threaten my father.
Maybe she had been frightened into silence.
Maybe Vanessa had convinced her that speaking up would destroy the family.
Or maybe there was something she still hadn't told me.
Mrs. Brooks closed the laptop.
“The original recording is the strongest evidence we have. Without it, Vanessa's lawyers will argue that the video is incomplete and that the financial records were obtained improperly.””
“Where is it?”” I asked.
Mrs. Brooks looked toward the clock.
“Your father said it was hidden inside something belonging to Brianna. He believed she would remember where it was if she ever felt safe enough to speak.””
I stood up.
“I have to go back.””
Elena grabbed my hand.
“Nia, no. Vanessa may be waiting for you.””
“She has my dress. She has Brianna. And now I know my stepsister may be the only person who can prove what happened.””
Mrs. Brooks handed me the original will.
“Take this to the competition. The event organizers have a legal adviser on their board. If you win, the public attention may make it harder for Vanessa to silence you.””
I stared at her.
“You want me to walk onto a stage while my family is falling apart?””
“I want you to have witnesses when the truth comes out.””
My mother squeezed my shoulder.
“And I want you to come back alive.””
I tucked the will inside my bag and hurried toward the door.
Then Mrs. Brooks called after me.
“Nia!””
I turned.
She was holding another document.
“One more thing. Robert's final amendment included a provision that Vanessa doesn't know about.””
“What provision?””
Mrs. Brooks looked directly into my eyes.
“If Vanessa is found to have concealed evidence relating to his death, she forfeits every claim to the estate. But the inheritance doesn't pass directly to you.””
“Then who gets it?””
Mrs. Brooks hesitated.
“The person your father named as the alternate beneficiary.””
My heart began pounding.
“Who?””
She lowered her voice.
“Brianna Whitmore.””
I froze.
“Whitmore? As in Daniel Whitmore?””
Mrs. Brooks nodded.
“Brianna is not Vanessa's biological daughter, Nia. Her birth certificate was altered after her adoption. Her biological father is Daniel Whitmore.””
Suddenly, every piece of the story shifted.
Brianna's fear. Vanessa's obsession with controlling the estate. Daniel's presence at the mansion. My father's insistence that Brianna held the missing evidence.
And the fact that my father had chosen her as the alternate beneficiary.
I rushed outside and called Brianna.
She answered on the first ring.
“Nia?””
“Where are you?””
“At home. Why?””
“Listen carefully. I know about the recording. I know what Dad said.””
Silence.
Then Brianna whispered, “I was wondering when you would find out.””
My stomach dropped.
“You knew?””
“I didn't understand everything back then. But I know where the original recording is.””
“Where?””
Her voice broke.
“Inside the dress you made.””
I stopped walking.
“What?””
“The blue gown, Nia. I hid it there after I found the recording in Dad's study. I thought Mommy would never look inside something you made.””
I stared at the street.
The dress Vanessa had stolen.
The gown Brianna was supposed to wear onstage.
The same gown that had carried the silver key.
And now, apparently, the evidence that could expose my father's killers.
Then Brianna said the words that made my blood run cold.
“Nia, Mommy knows what's inside it.””
A door slammed on her end of the line.
May you like
She screamed.
And the call went dead.
