Chapter 9: The Truth Danielle Buried
Marcus did not return home until the children were settled at Renee's for the night.
He had spent the evening with Denise, documenting the anonymous messages and reviewing the photograph Lily had found. They had agreed not to confront Daniel directly until they understood the full history of his involvement.
But Marcus could not ignore the handwriting on the back of the photograph.
Danielle had written the words herself.
He came back after she said no.
Whatever had happened seven years earlier, Danielle knew about it.
And she had kept the photograph.
At 8:16 p.m., Marcus arrived home.
Danielle was sitting in the living room with every light turned on. Her handbag rested beside her, and a suitcase stood near the stairs.
She looked up as he entered.
“Where have you been?””
“With the children. And my attorney.””
Her face tightened.
“You went to see Elaine.””
Marcus set his keys on the table.
“Yes.””
Danielle stood abruptly.
“You had no right to involve her without talking to me.””
“The arrangement belongs to Jordan. I have every reason to understand what happened.””
“You don't understand the danger you're creating.””
Marcus looked at the suitcase.
“Are you leaving?””
“I was considering it.””
“Then we need to discuss where the children will be and how we're handling the household. But before that, I need answers.””
Danielle laughed bitterly.
“Of course you do.””
He placed the photograph on the coffee table.
Her expression changed instantly.
“Where did you get that?””
“Lily found it in her scrapbook.””
Danielle reached for it, but Marcus picked it up first.
“Tell me why you wrote this.””
She stared at the photograph.
For several seconds, she appeared unable to breathe properly.
Then she sat down.
“Rachel was afraid of Daniel,” she said.
Marcus remained standing.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted something she refused to give him.””
“What did he want?””
Danielle pressed her hands together.
“Control over Jordan's trust.””
Marcus felt a familiar coldness settle in his chest.
“I know he was removed from the arrangement. I know Rachel refused to authorize him. I know you tried to change the authorized contacts last month.””
Danielle looked up sharply.
“How much did Elaine tell you?””
“Enough to know you have not been honest with me.””
She looked away.
“Daniel contacted me six months ago.””
Marcus sat opposite her.
“What did he say?””
“He told me he had been trying to protect Rachel's wishes. He said Elaine had misunderstood the original arrangement and that Jordan's money was being managed incorrectly.””
“Did you verify any of that?””
“He showed me documents.””
“Did you contact Elaine?””
“No.””
“Did you contact Rachel's attorney?””
“No.””
“Then you accepted the word of a man Rachel had specifically excluded from the arrangement.””
Danielle's face flushed.
“I didn't know that at first!””
“But you knew before you submitted the paperwork.””
She said nothing.
Marcus leaned forward.
“What did Daniel promise you?””
Danielle's eyes filled with tears.
“He said I could be recognized as Jordan's primary representative. He said it would make things easier for everyone.””
“Everyone except Jordan's father.””
“You were never interested in discussing the future! Every time I tried to talk about what would happen when Jordan got older, you told me not to worry.””
“Because I trusted the existing arrangement. I trusted the people Rachel chose.””
“You trusted people who weren't here every day!””
Marcus's voice sharpened.
“And you decided that gave you the right to take over?””
Danielle stood and paced toward the window.
“I was tired, Marcus. I was tired of feeling like every decision I made was temporary because I wasn't his real mother. I thought if I could handle the paperwork, if I could show you I was capable of managing everything, you'd finally see me as an equal partner.””
Marcus stared at her.
“An equal partner doesn't secretly change a child's financial arrangements.””
“I thought it would be harmless.””
“Then why did you lie?””
“Because I knew you'd say no!””
The words burst out of her.
Silence followed.
Danielle pressed a hand over her mouth.
Marcus looked at her with disbelief.
“So you knew I wouldn't agree, and you did it anyway.””
“I was trying to help.””
“Help whom?””
She shook her head, crying now.
“I don't know anymore.””
Marcus waited.
At last, Danielle returned to the couch.
“Daniel told me that Rachel had promised him a role in Jordan's future. He said she changed her mind only because you pressured her.””
Marcus felt anger rise, but he forced himself to remain still.
“That's a lie. Rachel made her own decisions.””
“I didn't know that.””
“You had a letter. You had the agreement. You had every opportunity to ask questions.””
“He said the documents were incomplete.””
“And you believed him.””
Danielle looked at the photograph.
“He came to see me at work. He told me he had known Rachel better than anyone. He said she had been afraid to challenge you because she knew you would always choose Jordan over everybody else.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“Of course I would choose my son over anyone trying to take advantage of him.””
Danielle looked at him.
For a moment, she seemed to recognize the truth of that statement.
Then her expression changed again.
“Daniel said the trust could be reorganized without taking anything away from Jordan. He said I could be paid for managing his care.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Paid?””
She nodded miserably.
“He said there was a provision for administrative expenses. He told me I could receive compensation if I became the authorized representative.””
“Did he show you that provision in the actual agreement?””
“No.””
“Did you ask Elaine?””
“No.””
Marcus stood and walked to the window.
The cruelty at dinner, the secrecy surrounding the paperwork, the desperate attempt to stop him from watching the recordings—all of it now appeared connected by a motive Danielle had been unwilling to admit.
She had resented the time Jordan needed. She had resented the attention Marcus gave him. And she had begun to see his protected resources not merely as support for his future, but as something she might use to gain recognition and control.
Still, Marcus needed one final answer.
“Did Daniel tell you to mistreat Jordan?””
Danielle looked up.
“No.””
“Did he ask you to make Jordan seem incapable of managing anything so that you could claim more authority?””
She hesitated.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Danielle.””
“He said it would help if the records showed Jordan needed more supervision.””
Marcus's face went pale.
“What records?””
“School records. Care assessments. Anything that demonstrated he needed a representative.””
“You mean records that accurately described his needs, or records that exaggerated them?””
“I don't know!””
“Did you ever tell a school or care provider something about Jordan that wasn't true?””
Danielle covered her face.
“I may have described certain incidents differently.””
Marcus felt sick.
“Which incidents?””
She shook her head.
“I don't remember everything.””
“Then you'll need to start remembering.””
He took out his phone, but before he could call Denise, Danielle spoke again.
“There was something else.””
Marcus stopped.
“Tell me.””
“Daniel said Rachel had left another letter.””
Marcus's heart began to pound.
“What letter?””
“He said she wrote it after she discovered what he was trying to do. He claimed it explained why she changed the arrangement.””
“Where is it?””
“I don't know.””
“Danielle.””
“He said it was with a lawyer. He said if the trust was ever challenged, the letter would prove that Rachel had wanted him involved all along.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Did you believe him?””
“I wanted to.””
The admission was quieter than the others.
She looked down at her hands.
“I wanted someone to tell me I mattered in this family. I wanted to believe there was a way to make all of this easier. And Daniel knew that.””
Marcus's anger did not disappear, but it shifted.
Danielle had been manipulated, perhaps, but she had also made choices. She had lied to him, taken documents, and treated a vulnerable child with deliberate cruelty.
Understanding her motive did not erase the harm.
“Why did you throw Jordan's dinner away?”” he asked.
She began crying harder.
“I was angry.””
“At him?””
“At you. At the whole situation. He asked for something, and I wanted to prove that I could decide when he got it.””
Marcus looked at her in horror.
“So you used my son to punish me.””
She nodded.
“I didn't think you'd find out.””
The confession left a terrible silence behind it.
Marcus walked toward the hallway.
“I need you to pack what you need for tonight. You cannot stay here with the children while we work through this. I'll arrange appropriate communication through our attorneys.””
Danielle rose quickly.
“Marcus, please. Don't throw away our marriage.””
He turned.
“You threw away my son's dinner because you thought you could control him. Then you lied to my face. Then you tried to stop me from finding the truth.””
“I can change.””
“Maybe you can. But change doesn't begin with demanding that I trust you again. It begins with taking responsibility.””
She stepped toward him.
“I love you.””
Marcus's eyes glistened.
“I wanted to believe that love was enough. But love that makes a child afraid to ask for food isn't protecting anybody.””
Danielle sank onto the couch.
For a moment, she looked small and lost.
Then her phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen.
Marcus noticed the sudden change in her face.
“Who is it?””
She turned the phone over.
“Danielle, who is it?””
“No one.””
The phone vibrated again.
Marcus held out his hand.
“Don't delete anything. If it's related to the documents, preserve it.””
She stared at him.
Then she reluctantly unlocked the phone and showed him the message.
It was from Daniel Mercer.
You were supposed to secure the authorization. Now Marcus is asking questions. Tell him nothing about the letter.
A second message followed.
If he has Rachel's original folder, we need to move before he finds the rest.
Marcus read the messages twice.
“What rest?””
Danielle shook her head.
“I don't know.””
He believed that she might not know the full answer.
But he no longer believed her ignorance was accidental.
He photographed the messages and sent them to Denise.
Then he looked at Danielle.
“Where can we find Daniel?””
She gave him an address in Buckhead and said it was the office he had used when they first met.
Marcus wrote it down.
Before he could ask anything else, Danielle's phone rang.
Daniel's name appeared on the screen.
She stared at it.
Marcus motioned for her to answer, then put the call on speaker only after she agreed.
“Hello?”” she said.
Daniel's voice came through, smooth and controlled.
“Danielle, we have a problem.””
She glanced at Marcus.
“What kind of problem?””
“Marcus has the folder. He may have spoken to Elaine.””
“He has.””
A pause.
Then Daniel said, “I told you not to let him find the letter.””
Danielle's eyes widened.
“You said you didn't know where it was.””
“I said I didn't have it.””
Marcus leaned toward the phone.
“Daniel Mercer. This is Marcus Reed.””
Silence.
Then Daniel gave a short laugh.
“Marcus. I was wondering when we'd finally speak.””
“You can explain yourself to my attorney.””
“Your attorney can't change what Rachel wanted.””
“Then you should have no problem showing us the evidence.””
Daniel's voice hardened.
“You don't know what Rachel wanted at the end.””
Marcus gripped the edge of the table.
“Then tell me.””
Daniel paused.
When he spoke again, the warmth had disappeared.
“Ask Danielle what happened the night Rachel called me.””
The call ended.
Marcus stared at the phone.
Danielle was trembling.
“What happened that night?”” he demanded.
She looked at him through tear-filled eyes.
“I wasn't there,” she whispered.
“I only know what Daniel told me.””
“What did he tell you?””
She swallowed.
“He said Rachel asked him to come to the house. He said they argued. And he said that after he left, Rachel changed the trust.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Daniel said the argument had nothing to do with the trust.””
She looked down.
“And because he said Rachel had asked him to keep something else secret.””
Marcus's voice dropped.
“What?””
Danielle raised her eyes.
“He said Rachel was afraid someone in the family would try to take Jordan away from you.””
Marcus froze.
For a moment, he could hear nothing but the ticking clock on the wall.
Then he asked the question he had been afraid to ask since opening the blue folder.
“Who was she afraid of?””
Danielle's lips trembled.
“I don't know.””
But as Marcus looked at her, he understood that the answer was somewhere between the original agreement, the missing letter, and the man who had just hung up on them.
The truth had been buried for seven years.
May you like
Now it was coming back.
And this time, Marcus would not let anyone throw it away.
