Chapter 2: The Man Standing Behind the Door

Marcus had come home early because he wanted to surprise Maya.

She had been quieter lately.

Too quiet.

The kind of quiet that only parents who pay attention notice.

For weeks, he had asked her what was wrong.

“Nothing, Dad,” she always answered.

But Marcus knew his daughter.

Maya used to fill every room she entered. She sang while doing homework. She laughed loudly at movies. She left little drawings on the refrigerator.

Recently, she had started apologizing for everything.

Sorry for needing dinner.

Sorry for asking questions.

Sorry for taking up space.

Marcus never understood why.

Until now.

Standing behind the doorway, he saw the truth.

His daughter stood alone.

His wife sat comfortably on the couch.

The tickets were in her hand.

The suitcase was packed.

And Maya was excluded.

Vanessa turned around and froze.

The confidence disappeared from her face.

“Marcus…”

But he barely looked at her.

His eyes stayed on Maya.

His little girl was staring at the floor, trying so hard not to cry.

That hurt him more than anything.

He slowly stepped forward.

“Maya.””

She looked up.

The moment she saw her father, her expression changed.

Not because she wanted to complain.

Because she was afraid.

Afraid that telling the truth would make things worse.

Marcus walked closer.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“What did you mean?””

Vanessa forced a small laugh.

“Nothing. You misunderstood.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I heard you.””

The room became silent.

Jordan and Alexis stopped smiling.

Marcus looked at the tickets.

Then at his wife.

Then back at his daughter.

“Tell me something, Vanessa.””

He pointed toward Maya.

“My daughter lives here. She eats here. She sleeps here. She carries my name.””

His jaw tightened.

“So why was she standing there without a ticket?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

“She’s not my responsibility.””

The sentence came out quickly.

And Marcus felt something inside him break.

Not because he was surprised.

Because he finally understood how long Maya had been carrying that pain alone.

He walked past his daughter.

Not away from her.

Toward the people who had made her feel unwanted.

And Vanessa realized something.

May you like

The man standing in front of her was no longer confused.

He was a father who had just discovered his child had been hurt.
