Chapter 9: The Inheritance of Lies

David's revelation left the room silent.

Jasmine stood beside the sofa, still holding the photograph of Thomas Reed. Her eyes moved from David to Eleanor, searching for an explanation that would make sense of the last few hours.

"My grandfather changed his will because of me?""

David nodded slowly.

"I think so.""

Eleanor felt as though the past were rearranging itself around her.

Her father had died in late 2003, nearly a year before Amelia disappeared. He had been a stern but loving man who believed family loyalty was the foundation of everything worth building.

He had left the estate to Marcus and David, with Eleanor receiving a separate inheritance and a provision that protected her children's interests.

At the time, she had assumed the arrangement was simply a matter of fairness.

Now she wondered what else he had known.

"Tell us everything," she said.

David sat down.

"Your father discovered irregularities in the family trust before he died. He asked Thomas Reed to investigate the accounts. Thomas found that Marcus had been moving money through shell companies and falsifying property valuations.""

"How much money?"" Ryan asked.

"Enough to put Marcus in prison if the evidence held up.""

Eleanor gripped the back of a chair.

"And my father knew?""

"Yes. He confronted Marcus. They argued for weeks. Shortly before he died, your father changed the trust documents and added a clause protecting the financial interests of his grandchildren.""

Jasmine frowned.

"Which grandchildren?""

"Amelia and Ryan.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"Why not all future grandchildren?""

David looked at her.

"Because your father had discovered something about the inheritance. He believed Marcus was planning to use the trust to conceal a financial crime, and he wanted to make sure the children couldn't be used as leverage.""

Ryan's expression hardened.

"So Marcus took Amelia to get around the trust.""

"That's what it looks like.""

Jasmine stared at the photograph in her hands.

"But I was born in 2003. Amelia was born in 1999. Why would my grandfather's will have anything to do with me?""

David looked toward Denise.

"Because Thomas had discovered that Marcus was paying for medical treatment through the trust. There were records of a woman who had given birth to a child outside the family. The payments were concealed under the names of several companies.""

Denise went pale.

"I gave birth to Jasmine in 2003.""

Eleanor turned toward her.

"Did you know Thomas was working for my father?""

Denise shook her head.

"No. Thomas told me he handled accounts for a private company. He never mentioned the Brooks family.""

David continued.

"Marcus knew about the pregnancy. He also knew Thomas had been collecting evidence against him. When your father changed the will, Marcus realized the trust could be frozen if the financial irregularities were exposed.""

"So he needed the children out of the way," Ryan said.

"Not exactly."" David rubbed his forehead.

"He needed to control the records that established who had a legal interest in the trust. If Thomas could prove the money had been used for an unauthorized arrangement involving children, the entire estate could be investigated.""

Jasmine stared at him.

"You're saying I was part of a financial crime before I was even born.""

"I'm saying Marcus treated you like a problem he could solve with paperwork and money.""

Her face twisted with anger.

"I wasn't a problem. I was a baby.""

David lowered his eyes.

"You're right.""

Eleanor sat beside Jasmine.

For the first time, she allowed herself to rest a hand on her daughter's shoulder. Jasmine didn't pull away.

"Your grandfather loved you," Eleanor whispered.

"He would never have wanted you hurt.""

Jasmine looked at her.

"Then why didn't he protect me?""

The question was quiet, but Eleanor had no answer.

Her father had died before Amelia disappeared. He had never known the full extent of Marcus's plan, or perhaps he had suspected more than he had been able to prove.

But he had tried to protect the children through a will, while Marcus had been willing to manipulate every document he could find.

The truth was beginning to emerge, but it wasn't yet complete.

The investigator called shortly after midnight.

He told them that a warrant had been requested to examine the old Brooks estate and that a specialist would review the suspected forged consent form. He also asked Denise to remain available for a formal statement about the payment and the threats she had received.

There was one other development.

A bank had confirmed that a safety deposit box registered to Thomas Reed still existed.

The box had not been accessed for more than twenty years.

The investigator planned to obtain legal authorization to examine its contents.

"What's in the box?"" Ryan asked.

"We don't know," the investigator replied.

"But if the documents are authentic, they may establish the connection between the missing children and the trust.""

Jasmine closed her eyes.

"Then we'll wait.""

Eleanor looked at her.

"Are you sure?""

"No," Jasmine admitted.

"But I'm tired of running toward every new answer and finding another lie.""

She leaned against the sofa.

Ryan sat beside her, careful not to crowd her.

For a few minutes, the house was quiet.

Then David's phone rang.

He looked at the screen and went pale.

"It's Marcus.""

Eleanor held out her hand.

"Put him on speaker.""

David hesitated, then answered.

"What do you want?""

Marcus sounded exhausted.

"I want you to stop this before it's too late.""

David's jaw tightened.

"Too late for whom?""

"For all of us.""

"You stole my niece's life. You let my wife spend twenty-two years grieving. You manipulated me into signing documents I didn't understand. And now you want me to help you?""

Marcus exhaled sharply.

"You still don't understand what I was trying to prevent.""

"Then explain it.""

"I can't.""

"Because you won't, or because you can't admit what you've done?""

Marcus was silent.

Eleanor stepped closer.

"Marcus, I want you to answer one question.""

"What?""

"Did you take Amelia because of the trust?""

"Yes.""

The admission came so quickly that Eleanor nearly dropped the phone.

"Why?""

"Because Thomas had evidence that would have destroyed everything. Your father had changed the will, and the trust was about to be examined. If the records came out, the estate would have been frozen. Every company connected to it would have been investigated.""

"So you took my daughter?""

"I arranged for her to be placed somewhere safe.""

Eleanor's voice rose.

"You arranged for a five-year-old child to be ripped from her mother!""

Marcus's breathing grew ragged.

"I never intended for you to suffer like this.""

"You knew I would suffer! You watched me suffer!""

"I thought the arrangement would last a few months. I thought I could resolve the trust dispute before anyone discovered what had happened.""

"Twenty-two years is a few months to you?""

Marcus said nothing.

Eleanor pressed the phone closer.

"What happened to Thomas Reed?""

Another silence.

Then Marcus spoke.

"He disappeared.""

"Did you kill him?""

"No!""

The answer was immediate, almost offended.

"Then where is he?""

"I don't know.""

"You expect me to believe that?""

"I haven't seen him since 2004.""

Eleanor felt her hands shaking.

"Did you know Denise was pregnant with his child?""

Marcus exhaled.

"Yes.""

"Did you know Jasmine was his daughter?""

"I knew Thomas believed she was.""

Jasmine rose from the sofa.

"What does that mean?""

Marcus heard her voice.

"Jasmine, listen to me. Your mother told you a story that wasn't complete.""

Jasmine stepped toward the phone.

"Neither was yours. You stole me, hid me, and let me grow up believing I had been abandoned. You don't get to tell me what the truth is.""

Marcus's voice softened.

"I did what I thought was necessary.""

"No," Jasmine said.

"You did what you thought you could get away with.""

For the first time, Marcus had no immediate response.

Jasmine continued.

"You knew I was a person. You knew I had a mother. You knew I had a father who might have been looking for me. You took all of that away because you were afraid of losing money.""

"That's not the whole story.""

"Then tell it.""

Marcus's voice dropped.

"Because if I tell you the whole story, you'll understand why your grandfather was afraid of what Thomas had discovered.""

Eleanor felt a chill move through her.

"What did Thomas discover?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Then he said, "Ask David what happened at the hospital on October 16, 2004.""

The call ended.

David stood motionless, the phone still pressed to his ear.

Eleanor turned toward him.

"What happened at the hospital?""

David looked as though he had aged ten years in a minute.

"I told you what I remembered.""

"Then remember harder!""

He closed his eyes.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he whispered, "There was another woman at St. Anne's.""

Denise sat upright.

"What woman?""

"She was in the consultation room with Marcus. She had a newborn baby. Thomas was there, too.""

Jasmine gripped the back of the sofa.

"Thomas was alive?""

"Yes. He was arguing with Marcus. He kept saying that the child wasn't supposed to be part of the arrangement.""

"What child?"" Eleanor asked.

David's voice shook.

"The baby.""

Denise covered her mouth.

David continued.

"Thomas told Marcus that the child belonged to him. Marcus said the baby belonged to the trust until the financial dispute was settled.""

Jasmine's eyes widened.

"That doesn't make any sense.""

"I know.""

"How can a baby belong to a trust?""

"It can't. But Marcus had arranged for the child to be entered into the records under a temporary identity. He claimed it was necessary to protect the child's inheritance.""

Eleanor felt a terrible understanding begin to form.

"The child was Jasmine.""

David nodded.

"Yes.""

Jasmine sank onto the sofa.

"So Thomas knew I existed. He knew I was his daughter.""

"Yes.""

"And Marcus took Amelia to hide me?""

David shook his head slowly.

"I think he took Amelia because he needed someone whose identity could be used to conceal yours.""

Nobody spoke.

The implications were almost impossible to absorb.

If Marcus had manipulated the hospital records, the adoption petition, and the trust documents, then Amelia's disappearance might have been part of a scheme to replace one child's identity with another.

Jasmine looked at the silver heart.

"Then why did he leave me with Denise?""

"Because Denise could raise you without drawing attention," David said.

"And because he could tell the authorities that Amelia had been taken by someone outside the family while he quietly settled the trust.""

Eleanor stood abruptly.

"But why Amelia? Why not use another child?""

David's face crumpled.

"Because Amelia's identity already had legal protection under your father's will. If Marcus could make it appear that Amelia had been placed with a guardian under a legitimate agreement, he could use the records to disguise the transfer of money and property.""

Eleanor stared at him.

"He used my daughter as a financial instrument.""

David nodded.

"Yes.""

Jasmine began to cry.

Not loudly. Not dramatically.

She sat with her hands folded in her lap, tears falling onto her sweater while she tried to comprehend that two children had been turned into pieces in a game neither had chosen to play.

Eleanor sat beside her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

This time, Jasmine leaned into her.

For a few seconds, they held each other in silence.

Then Ryan's phone buzzed.

A message had arrived from the investigator.

The safety deposit box had been opened under emergency authorization.

Inside, investigators had found financial ledgers, hospital records, and a sealed envelope bearing Thomas Reed's name.

The envelope contained a letter.

It was addressed to Jasmine.

And the final line read:

If you are reading this, then Marcus has failed to keep us apart. There is one truth you must know before you decide who your family really is.

Jasmine wiped her face.

"Read it.""

Ryan opened the attached photograph of the letter and began.

But he stopped after the first paragraph.

His face had gone white.

"What?"" Eleanor demanded.

Ryan looked at Jasmine.

Then at David.

Then he whispered the words that made every person in the room fall silent.

"Thomas says Jasmine was never the child Marcus intended to hide.""

He turned the phone toward Eleanor.

"The child he intended to hide was Amelia.""

And beneath that sentence, Thomas had written one final warning.

The girl who disappeared and the girl who came back may share more than a name. Check the original birth records before you trust anyone's claim about either child.

Eleanor stared at Jasmine.

May you like

Jasmine stared back.

For the first time, neither woman knew whether the necklace had brought a daughter home—or uncovered a second identity hidden inside the first.
