Chapter 6: The Secret Danielle Was Afraid to Tell
Marcus drove home with Vanessa's email open on his phone.
He read it at every red light, though the words never changed.
Ask your wife what she hasn't told you.
By the time he reached the house, he had imagined a dozen explanations. None made him feel better.
Danielle was in Lily's bedroom when he found her.
The room looked almost untouched. A pink blanket lay folded at the foot of the bed. A collection of picture books rested on a small shelf. Her stuffed rabbit sat beside a pillow, one floppy ear pressed against the fabric.
Danielle was sitting on the floor, sorting through a box of crayons.
Marcus stopped at the doorway.
"Can we talk?""
She didn't look up.
"About what?""
He held out his phone.
"Vanessa sent me an email.""
Danielle's hand froze over the box.
"What did she say?""
"She said I should ask you what you haven't told me about Wednesday night.""
For several seconds, Danielle remained perfectly still.
Then she placed the crayons back in the box, one by one.
Marcus watched her face.
"You know what she's talking about?""
Danielle rose slowly.
"I don't know what Vanessa thinks she knows.""
"That's not an answer.""
"It's the only one I have right now.""
He stepped into the room.
"Danielle, I am trying to understand why somebody sent a message from my phone while our daughter was dying. I received a second message telling me to stop looking. Now Vanessa is suggesting you know something I don't.""
Danielle turned toward the window.
"She has no right to drag me into whatever this is.""
"Then tell me what she means.""
"I don't know!""
Her voice cracked on the last word.
Marcus looked at the stuffed rabbit on the bed.
"Did something happen at the hospital that you haven't told me?""
Danielle's shoulders rose with a sharp breath.
For a moment, he thought she would deny it.
Instead, she covered her mouth.
"There was something," she whispered.
Marcus went completely still.
"What?""
Danielle pressed her palms against her eyes.
"I didn't tell you because I couldn't bear to repeat it. I didn't tell the officer because I didn't understand what it meant, and I didn't want to confuse what we already knew.""
His heartbeat thundered in his ears.
"Danielle, please.""
She lowered her hands.
"When Lily was at the emergency department, her teacher called me. She was crying. She told me she'd been trying to reach you because Lily wanted to talk to her daddy.""
Marcus nodded, struggling to keep his voice steady.
"You told me that.""
"I know. But there was something else.""
"What?""
"Mrs. Parker said that after the calls went unanswered, she received a message from your number.""
"I know about the message.""
Danielle shook her head.
"No. You know a message existed. You don't know what happened before it arrived.""
Marcus stared at her.
"Then tell me.""
Danielle walked to Lily's bed and picked up the stuffed rabbit. She held it against her chest, her fingers rubbing the worn fabric near its ear.
"Mrs. Parker said she had been speaking to Lily about you. Lily was scared, Marcus.
She wanted to hear your voice. The teacher kept trying to call because she thought that if you answered, Lily might calm down.""
Marcus sat on the edge of the bed.
"Go on.""
"Mrs. Parker said that just before the message came, she heard another voice near her phone.""
He looked up.
"What voice?""
"She couldn't be certain. There was noise in the room, and she was upset. She said she thought someone might have been speaking to her, but she couldn't tell who.""
Marcus felt a chill move through him.
"Did she say it was Vanessa?""
"No.""
"Did she recognize the voice?""
"She wasn't sure.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
Danielle's eyes flashed.
"Because I didn't know whether it mattered! Because my daughter was dying, Marcus! I was trying to understand what the doctors were saying.
I was trying to keep Lily's hand warm. I was trying to remember the sound of her voice because I could feel her slipping away.""
Her words broke into a sob.
Marcus stood immediately.
"Danielle, I'm sorry.""
"No, listen to me."" She wiped her cheeks.
"Mrs. Parker told me she couldn't explain the message. She didn't know who sent it.
She didn't even know whether the voice she heard had anything to do with the text. All she knew was that the message arrived from your number.""
Marcus lowered his head.
"Did she tell you anything about the wording?""
Danielle hesitated.
"She told me it didn't sound like the kind of answer a father would give when his little girl needed him.""
He looked at her sharply.
"What does that mean?""
"I don't know. I didn't see the message. I only heard her describe how it made her feel.""
Marcus walked toward the window, then turned back.
"Did you ask her to send you a copy?""
"No.""
"Why not?""
"Because I was holding Lily's hand!""
Danielle's voice echoed through the little bedroom.
Then, almost immediately, she crumpled.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"I keep shouting. I don't mean to shout at you every time you ask a question. I just can't understand how to be here without her.""
Marcus crossed the room but stopped before touching her.
For the first time, he understood that his wife wasn't withholding information to protect herself or accuse him.
She was trying to survive memories that arrived without warning.
"I won't ask you to tell me everything at once," he said.
"But we can't let fear decide what we investigate.""
Danielle looked at him.
"Do you think Vanessa sent the message?""
"I don't know.""
"Do you think she had your phone?""
"She had opportunities to access it. That doesn't prove she used it.""
"And what about the email?""
"I've preserved it. The company is retaining the relevant records, and Officer Brooks knows about the additional contact.""
Danielle nodded slowly.
"Then we need to speak to Mrs. Parker.""
"I agree.""
He took out his phone and called the teacher, using the contact information Danielle had provided.
Mrs. Parker answered after several rings.
"Hello?""
"Mrs. Parker, this is Marcus Reed. I'm Lily's father.""
There was a brief silence.
"Oh, Mr. Reed," she said softly.
"I'm so sorry.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Thank you. I know this is difficult, but I need to ask you about the calls you made Wednesday night.""
"I understand.""
"Did you receive a message from my number?""
"Yes.""
"Can you tell me exactly what it said?""
Mrs. Parker hesitated.
"I've been thinking about that message every day.""
Marcus gripped the phone tighter.
"Why?""
"Because I couldn't understand why someone would respond that way when a little girl needed her father.""
Danielle stepped closer, listening.
Marcus forced himself to speak.
"Mrs. Parker, I need you to tell me the truth, even if it's painful.""
"I will.""
"Did the message say someone was coming?""
"No.""
"Did it say someone was busy?""
"No.""
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
"Then what did it say?""
On the other end of the line, Mrs. Parker took a shaky breath.
"I don't want to misquote it, Mr. Reed. I kept the original message because I thought someone might need it someday. I can provide it to the appropriate investigator.""
"Please do.""
"I will.""
He was about to thank her when she spoke again.
"There's one more thing.""
Marcus looked at Danielle.
"What?""
"After I received that message, I called the number again. Someone answered.""
Marcus stopped breathing.
Danielle gripped the edge of Lily's desk.
"Who answered?"" he asked.
Mrs. Parker's voice trembled.
"I couldn't see the person, and I couldn't identify them with certainty. But I heard a woman say something before the call ended.""
Marcus felt his fingers go numb around the phone.
"What did she say?""
Mrs. Parker went quiet.
Then she answered.
"She said, 'He doesn't need to know about this.''"
Danielle staggered backward.
Marcus stared at the phone, unable to move.
The words were not a confession. They did not prove Vanessa had touched his phone, and they did not explain what had happened to Lily.
But they changed the shape of the mystery.
Somewhere, a woman had answered a call connected to his number that Wednesday night.
And she had spoken as though she were protecting a secret from him.
Marcus looked at Danielle.
"Did you ever hear that voice?""
His wife opened her mouth.
No words came.

Then she looked toward the little yellow dress hanging inside Lily's closet.
And whispered, "Marcus, I think I know why Vanessa is afraid.""
